  1. Well, I must admit that I haven't had much time to try it out myself. But I plan on using a 16 GB USB stick so size won't be an issue. I'll give it a go this weekend and post the results on Monday. Holy crap, thanks for the script Kevin!! I appreciate it!!
  2. Hah!! Doh!! I saw the update package and just double-clicked!!
  3. So how does one install this? I tried to install it on my laptop with Win7 and says that the update is not applicable.
  4. Yeah, I have one too and I'm having trouble loading MP3's on it. If I remember correctly, you have to have Windows XP SP1 to be able to load music on it. There was a firmware update that allowed you to use it on a PC with XP SP2, but it had to be installed before installing SP2. I installed XP SP1 on a PC, loaded the firmware successfully and am still having trouble!!! A pain in the neck!!!
  5. Make sure you "Run as Administrator"!
  6. I think some OEM's mess with the HWID of the graphics driver so it's tied to the drivers they release. I had that happen with a Dell with an ATI 9700 mobility card. The drivers from ATI did not work, I had to use the drivers on Dell's site.
  7. I have to say that the issue must be the wireless card. I've got a Dell Latitude D600 with the same card and I can't connect it to my wireless network running WPA. I actually setup a second WAP that is running WEP with MAC filtering as I have a few devices that don't like WPA.
  8. Has anyone tried putting all NT 6.x operating systems in one wim file? (Vista, 7, 2008, R2) both 32-bit and 64-bit? Any potential problems?
  9. Well, I was able to fix the problem by logging in to the desktop via RDP and updating the video drivers!! Yay for easy fixes!!!
  10. OK, So I've got my unattanded XP install on the network. All I do is pop in a WinPE boot disk and away it goes. I come back in about 20 minutes and the PC is waiting at a login screen. Which then I login as domain admin, add necessary users and groups to the local groups. I then login with my "deployment" domain account and run a script that installed apps and configures the profile so I can replace the default user profile with this one. I would love to automate the addition of the domain users and groups, login with the deployment account and star the script automatically. I know how to setup the auto login and the running of the script, but how do I need to edit the WINNT.SIF to add the users and groups?
  11. OK, I've been reading about this whole big "Black Screen of Death" deal that's been going around supposedly caused by some Windows Updates. Well, I have a PC that is exhibiting a black screen after the XP splash screen. I initially thought it was freezing but I later noticed that the PC was still running and I was able to connect to it via RDP login and check things out, which I couldnt' find anything wrong. I'm also able to login at the laptop by enabling vga mode but changing the resolution to anything about 800x600 brings the black screen back which tells me it's a video issue, uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers doesn't resolve the issue. The laptop is a Dell Precision M90 using a nVidia Quado FX 1500M GPU. The latest drivers are from 2007. Any way I can verify that the graphics card has gone bad?
  12. Here's a scenerio: Currently have 50 volume licenses and have 45 PCs. We order 10 new OEM PC's with OEM XP license that are NOT replacing any PC's. We can only install the volume license key on 5 of them? Edit: Well, I just did a bit of reading and it seems that is the case. Thanks for the assistance!
  13. OK, I'm working for a client that is a part of Microsoft Volume Licensing Program. Their current workstation setup is a mix of whitebox and OEM (Compaq, Dell) PC's. I would love to streamline the deployment of Windows XP using their volume key. Question is this. Can I install Windows XP with their volume license key even though they don't have a volume license for the PC? Example, they purchased a new Compaq PC and I want to re-install our customized automated install that uses the volume key.
  14. Is your version of Office 2003 fully patched? What happens if you begin typing when you set the bullets?
  15. Im running it in vmware workstation 7 on my Dell Latitude D630 and it runs pretty well. I like keeping old OS's handy in case I get a call that starts with "I have this PC that's running *insert old OS here* that's giving us a problem..."
  16. USB gets my vote too!! As long as the PC has USB2, that's how I install all my OS's.
  17. I'm not too familiar with this, but I have been told that you can do that with VLAN's.
  18. Well, I'm not too sure about other means, but MAC addresses are unique to the manufacturer, not the device type. If you had the MAC addresses of all your printers you could just created IP reservations.
  19. No, you can have multiple DC's but only one of them can be SBS.
  20. Is this an OEM PC? A client just purchased 10 new Dell Vostro 420's and out of the 5 I got up and running, 2 have exhibited this error. The PC's are running XP but they're using the Vista bootloader which I find extremely dumb, but I digress. Have you looked at the RAM?
  21. Has anyone used it with Windows 7? I'm having some troubles with it. Just wanted to see if anyone has been lucky!! It just seems to randomly skip files. I'm still trying to find a pattern, but no luck yet.
  22. Well, what I meant in my first post is that the menu doesn't cascade out into the screen. I'm not sure how people took my post by some of the replies I've seen but I'm actually a BIG fan of the new menu...don't see the big stink about the old one being gone...
  23. Honestly, I don't get it... I was a huge fan of the "Classic" start menu but I navigate this new menu the exact same way except that the menu's dont cascade. What am I missing here?
