Can't get to wpiw.net (now fixed!)
dencorso replied to soporific's topic in Windows Post-Install Wizard (WPI)
Good to see you around, Sop! You all but disappeared! Have you forsaken 9x/ME altogether? Do drop by more... You surely are missed! -
My condolences. May your brother rest in peace. The ways of the Lord are unfathomable... At times like this one must pursue acceptance, not understanding. You have my deepest sympathy.

The free Partition Saving is also a good choice. By all means, do a full disk, all included image. This post of mine might be of interest to you: (link).

v. 12.8 SR-10 *is* the last version of WinHex that runs on 9x/ME. The next version, 12.85 has full unicode support added, which makes it incompatible with 9x/ME. Yes. I'm aware of that. That's one of the limitations of the free version. But it allowed you to get a physical image, then it's suitable for the job. Now, if you decide to buy a license, you should write Stefan Fleischmann first, because the new versions use a different license format, which is incompatible with v. 12.8 SR-10. Tell him you want to run that version, because it'll run on 98SE, and he'll provide you with the correct license. And ask him whether a personal license would be enough (I believe so), or if a higher type is needed. Belive me when I say it's worth the cost.

You all shouldn't use the so called "friendly names" for links expected to survive all IPB updates. Use instead the base form of the links: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=146529 and http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=151551 which work no matter what.

What bpalone wrote may also work, but let's do one thing at a time. Once you install WinHex, it'll work OK as the free limited version. So, go to the Tools menu, select Open Disk, scroll the list down and see whether the LS-120 appears listed in the Physical Disks List. If so, then a physical copy may be acquired and eventually deployed.
-
This one. Sorry for the terseness, I'm in a hurry, right now.
-
Enter BIOS and set the LS-120 as a fixed disk. There should be such an option. Then work in true DOS, to avoid a useless redetection. Just for the record, here's an LS-120 manual.

The first link I gave you is from the winhex support forum. Stefan Fleischmann is the actual program creator. So it has implicit credibility. Now, WinHex abilities, in what regards cloning, are similar to ghost's, so an -ir try seems fully warranted, IMO.
-
I found this. Perhaps a physical clone of a good superfloppy will do it. WinHex is able to do it. It used to have a free but limited version, but I don't remember how much limited by now, because I have a specialist licence for a long time already. BTW, it's worth every cent of the license price. Later edit: then again, it just occurred to me that ghost -ir may be able to accomplish it as well. It's worth giving it a shot.

Do ANADISK or FDFORMAT work with it?

Try physical-formatting multiple times. It may work. But use the US English version, from SP9090... it's more common than anyone would imagine apps getting blorked in subtle ways on localization (translation).

Yes. On XP, use the Universal Extractor 1.61 (or gora's unofficial 1.62) and it'll extract the exe. Then rename DATA.Z to DATA.CAB and use the Universal Extractor again. Later edit: They are the selfsame pack (just different languages)!

Create a bootable CD/DVD from a set of floppies

You can also overcome the lower case letters issue by using SHSUCDX, instead of MSCDEX. Unless you don't need MSCDEX with SR_ASPI.SYS, then I'm simply wrong. In the above I assumed implicitly that your stack is ATAPIMGR.SYS -> SR_ASPI.SYS -> MSCDEX.EXE... if so, what you're seeing is a known MSCDEX limitation. -
Most by request patches to 9x/ME and to XP are useful. Quite rarely there are some that must be avoided, but they are the exception, not the rule, in my experience.

Oops! I think somehow I had missed your post #19, so I wasn't aware of it. In any case, to avoid confusion, please do give this new product a distinctive name, like FAT Size Limitation Surmounter, or something like it. Your freeware patch fixes a known bug in the filesystem implementation, while this new product you're talking about overcomes what is a filesystem limitation by design, so they're really very different things, if I got it right. However, even if it works well, this is bound to create a situation which is beyond the standard, and I confess I'm wary of such extensions... not to mention a special matching DOS driver would be needed, to allow correct access to those huge files from plain DOS, too.
-
If you mean RLoew's kernel32.dll patch for 4GiB (minus 1 byte) files, yes, it's freeware. And yes, it should be compatible with KernelEx. But I recommend you install it first, then install KernelEx, just in case.

@jaclaz: NO. Anything that isn't perceived by the OS as a Physicaldrive, preferably present from very early on (say: Start=0, Boot or System Bus Extender group) won't allow moving the pagefile to it (in case one wants to), anything that's high-level won't be able to access memory above the 3.2-3.5 GiB, which the OS doesn't see. The Gavotte is perfect for both. And works like clockwork. And is always clean and pristine after a reboot. It's not very fast, but still way faster than any real physical disk, SSDs included. And lets the user set the drive letter. And lets the user set it as fixed, removable, floppy or even as a RAM disk! As I said before, YMMV. So, let's agree to disagree. And thanks for the update on Firadisk and WinVblock! Many interesting things are happening at reboot (aka boot-land) that I haven't been able to follow closely... I still think of it as boot-land, since, for me, reboot is way too vague...

I never use Safe Mode, too. And because of using the RAM Limitation Patch, I don't need Usher's tweak. But I've set up Tihiy's video driver all the same, just in case. Now, with 32 MiB aperture and 384MiB VCache you'd probably be able to open more than 50 DOS boxes, but I don't think that'd do you any difference, for everyday use.
-
Sorry! I overreacted. You're right, they're blorked. Go back to post #15 and try again. All links are now fixed.
-
If, instead of posting blindly, you actually *read* the thread, you'd sure have read post #15...

jaclaz is right, of course! I think that probably the best ramdisk is still the freeware Gavotte Ramdisk (v. 1.0.4096.5 [2008-11-13]) and the free version of the VSuite Ramdisk is another good alternative. The Dataram Ramdisk has the annoying problem that you can only define the letter it'll take in case you load an image to it, or else it'll take the first available disk letter. And, well, if you want to actually boot from a ramdisk, the freeware FiraDisk is the one and only option. In any case, all this info was already in the links jaclaz pointed you to. So, all I did here was to give you my opinion, and to point you directly to the ramdrives I think best. YMMV, of course.
