  1. well seems like im an id***...It looks like most of the tweaks are applied in regedit...and I figured out why msn keeps running, its cuz I install it in runonceex.cmd and some other things are installed at that point so maybe thats why these arent working...Anyone know of a global way to keep msn and yahoo from loading on startup?
  2. OT: yea bud its me, long time no see...
  3. more than likely it has to do with your video drivers...I had the same problem and just opted to remove oemkrnl from my cd.
  4. try searching...there are reasons it doesnt work...dont remember off the top of my head, but I know its been answered here. I think all you have to do is copy reg.exe from xp to 2k. and it should work...dunno cuz there might be more files it needs...if you use taskkill at all, youll need that also.
  5. except the command prompt settings, everything else is tested and working...should I use regedit /s \HKCU.reg? I would think it would do the samer thing with or without the \...Im gonna try without /s and see if it errors...I may even try to see if regedit will load at this so I can verify the keys are in there...dunno but ill try. I would use XPlode but it took so much time to get to this point and then to have to go and transfer it all to xplode...itd take another couple of days (I dont work constantly on the same thing or ill get bored and scrap it).
  6. Thank you, it gives me something to build from...if you have to use full paths, then I need to find out how to get it to where it doesnt rely on hardcoded path and uses variables instead.
  7. about cdshell, cdshells folder is now labeled "boot". If he gets to the "insert cd in floppy" then his boot image is working...Check your I386 folder for a sp1.cat...you should have that file in there whether or not you have a sp1.cab. Also did you hexedit setupldr.bin and txtsetup.sif? If this was part of a multiboot cd (considering youre using cdshell it very well could be), then those files prolly point to the wrong path...hexedit setupldr.bin and search for i386, if you dont find any, then there is a problem...to find how to fix that, open txtsetup.sif and goto SourcePath (I believe, or SetupPath) and see what it says...if it is just a \ then all is fine...if it says anything else, delete all except for \ but take note of what it said...the first folder (should be 4 letters) will be what you need to search for in setupldr.bin and replace with i386.
  8. Jazz, im unsure but I do think youll either have to have a hacked uxtheme or something that allows the loading of non default themes...but you could always try on an installation...the only way to really tell is test...Im sure most people here already have the hacked uxtheme loading as a windows default system file...so unless anyone installs using a windows cd, its gonna be hard to test.
  9. its all cool...it just seems that it is brought across to people that this is the only way to go (ie the naming of folder using 00#), which if they dont wanna use numbers, they dont have to...I was just trying to throw out another option to people...personally, I use the number system because in my mind it makes sense, just depends on what kind of thinker you are...if you hate numbers, the less numbering, the better LOL...Or if ya wanna get real creative, as some people are, they can come up with a very cumbersome way of getting certain folders to exist before others im not creative or I would give an example. I dont think these dirs are limited to the 8.3 format as almost none of mine are 8 chars. So if you can contain your creativity in the maximum allowable characters allowed in a dir (dont forget about the limitations of dir path) then go for it
  10. As far as what runs... runonceex.cmd installs (dont know if it actually works, but the batch file runs) all hotfixes (according to windows update I have all installed) A few more questions...are there things that I can delete since I have it set in ntuser.dat...like the Internet Settings, Command Console? Or do I need both settings? Also, I load quicklaunch in both, could this be the reason it never loads in vmware? It does load in real environment.

  12. adds services to right click my computer
  13. xtreme, not to step on your toes, but the whole reason, in my understanding, for labeling folders with 000,001,002 is because say you just leave it as audio, chipset, lan, blah...it will load drivers for your audio first without loading maybe a motherboard driver for supporting the audio driver...windows will then not find the driver for audio and continue on to chipset, which it then will find the audio component but it will have already passed the drivers for installing the audio device...I know this doesnt make a whole lot of sense, but sometimes there are things the motherboard has on it that arent supported until the motherboard drivers are loaded...you shouldnt even have to use numbers, technically you could use letters and say achipset, avideo, bmouse, modem, sound...this should work also...I think the numbering system, and the reason for the 00 before the number is just a easier visualization on the user and to create a uniform system.
  14. Ok, I have learned to live with the fact that svcpack.inf is not gonna work for me, no idea why and it seems like there is no clear answer to this. Now my tweaks for HKCU arent working...though they never worked for me unless I apply them after a user is created (ie like logged in as admin). I have dumped all my HKCU reg settings in a file called HKCU.reg. I run it from cmdlines.txt as REGEDIT /S HKCU.reg. Do I need to specify .exe after regedit? I dont think so...I do know its not applying the tweaks because MSN starts up and I have it set not to. Also, if I apply them when im logged in, no more msn. Could it be a problem with VMWare? I could always test on a real environment I suppose, tho I somehow remember that it didnt work that way either. HKCU.reg is in the same folder as cmdlines.txt ($OEM$). Am I gonna have to knock everything into batch files? I have a batch called installs.cmd which loads ntuser.dat and adds a bunch of keys to that...OE fix, quicklaunch (which doesnt work in vmware in either installs or as a reg setting), command processor settings, screen saver disabled, max internet connections...these are only in the batch because as reg settings they were labeled as HKU\.Default so I dumped them in this...Im not even sure thats working, tho OE doesnt have the identity switch error (Its a multifaceted fix, so it may not even need what I do in installs.cmd...but who knows). Ok time for the question: Why am I having soo many problems with this? I have to run all hotfixes from cmdlines now and am lost on how to get my reg settings to apply for all users...Please help.
  15. these are like gamehouse games...bejeweled, solitaire, minesweeper...real basic things that I dont think use up too many resources.
  16. its only 2 users, yea 4 gb could become excessive for each, but when ya lose something youve been working on for months, you tend to not care about what resources are used up.
  17. well, once the vm is started, if they exit it wont be a big deal, they never shut down the machine anyways...In vmware (what im talkin about), I have it set to run fullscreen, so itll just be like booting up a normal machine. They have never shut down my computer, its just they like to click on adds and stupid stuff that I really dont wanna go through the process of cleaning...Im not blaming them for viruses and such, just dont want them getting into things im working on and click click the drive is formatted...I guess I could make 2 user accounts and just have the vm in their startup...it would also lessen some things they complain about on my machine, like the existence of proxomitron (which doesnt always let a site load correctly, and they havent learned about the bypass button)...I may just do that...I just thought of this today as I am about to reformat with my unattended cd, but how hard is it to create 2 users? Im fairly certain all I would have to do for the bypassing prox and putting the vm in startup is a delete and copy...In reply to raverod, Im not sure how much of a lockdown I can make this pc with group and local policy, basically all they do is print, surf the web and play games, lots and lots of games...I dont mind them downloading things either, just when its some stupid spyware that I dont care about, like gator. I would much rather throw what they want on a vm and not have to go through the whole policy editor... Thanx for the suggestions, I think im gonna create 2 users, kick prox out of startup and bump the vm link in.
  18. Ok, so far so good...didnt get things working like I wanted, but it works...I have only one problem...Some people in my family dont know how to use a computer other than to click on start menu and such...and I dont want them messing up my computer...so I have set up virtual machines for all of them. My only problem is that unless they click on the icon, they will still be on my machine. I am looking for a program that locks the PC. With my password it lets me into normal windows, when they enter their password, it runs the shortcut, or program whatever, which running this program will start thir virtual machine and let them mess that up. So Basically, Im looking for a program that will lock windows. Upon entering a password it will unlock windows Upon entering user1 password, it will run VM1 Upon entering user2 password, it will run VM2 Im sure this could be deemed as in the wrong place, but I figured on an unattended install, rather than making a whole new user that I only want to run one program, this would be the place to ask. I did a google search and it turned up a good program, but way too many options for my liking and I didnt see a real way to unattendedly install it...so Im open for ideas...worse comes to worse I can always make users, but I still think that is not gonna accomplish what I want because they will still have access to the main machine.
  19. Thank you, works perfectly...as for the ie window opening, I just run process -k iexplore.exe 10 (this allows a 10 sec window so that it has time to open...I ran into a problem with msgplus where it takes a few seconds to open...if you use taskkill, it tries to close the window, but fails because it isnt open yet) I install both msn messenger (per your files and instructions) and msgplus in the same subkey...if you just install msgr, you can prolly just do a taskkill...I just know msgplus takes a second or so...
  20. I have trouble understanding this... 1. Tried just using msnmsgr.msi TRANSFORMS=CustomMSNMsgr62.mst because I wanted the defaults you set...This did not install unattendedly, so other option 2. Tried msnmsgr.msi TRANSFORMS=CustomMSNMsgr62.mst /QB and it did install msn messenger unattendedly, but still comes back and runs me through the entire msntoolbar setup Am I doin this right? It just seems that this is not gonna happen installin msn messenger and toolbar unattendedly
  21. it should, yes...do a test first though... you may have to do this c:cd\del /F /S /Q *.tmp

  23. since application swicthes is only for contributions and not problems, Im posting this here...For the life of me, I cant get MSN Toolbar to install silently in runonceex...I use mstb.exe j and it always comes back with "failed". Does it need iexplore closed to install? I dont think so since it doesnt need that on my machine...Maybe its because of hotfixes and whatnot...dunno may do some more testin...I wonder if this can be added to say svcpack.inf...may try that also. Seems that it can be, obviously im not 100% sure since it isnt working in runonceex.cmd, but I will test it out...Also, I would just use the downloaded file "MSNToolbarSetup_en-us.exe" and how I do this is "MSNToolbarSetup_en-us.exe /C:"mtbs.exe j" /q:a" it still start iexplore, but maybe it wont in svcpack.inf...will test soon.
  24. hmmm...well ive written about 2 posts, but they dont work fully
  25. Ok, it seems that sysprep has the ability to encrypt the password for winnt.sif...my question is there another tool that encrypts a password so I can just copy that over to my winnt.sif. I ask this cuz my experiences with sysprep is that I have to go through the entire thing before I can open winnt.sif, which I really dont wanna do. I know its not a big deal, but I would much rather just have a small tool that I type my password in, and it outputs the encrypted password. Also, I advise everyone to use a password when installing an unattended cd. I used to not really care about it, but after a week, I had a trojan on my machine which I then had to find cleaners for. As I was reading about the trojan, it said that the pc could easily be infected through msn/irc/whatever and is usually because there is no password or a very easy password. (Yes this is the stupid worm/trojan that comes from irc/msn...Im sure MS has fixed it with one of the new hotfixes, but a lot of worms/trojans can easily infect your system when you have no password). Just my thoughts...and if anyone doesnt really wanna set a password...on irc if someone tells you about a really cool shockwave file made by xiaoxiao...dont click on it...this is what loaded the trojan...even though xiaoxiao made the animation and it is really cool, I dont think its him spreading it around...
