  1. Hi, I have been using a old version of KeyText for a few years but would like to switch to a better tool because there certain features which my current version does not have. Most importantly, I want my defined hotkeys organized as categories. I did use Google before making this post but got overwhelmed by the number of possibilities. Can someone kindly recommend a good tool (preferably freeware if possible but shareware will be equally good). Many advance thanks. P.S I'm currently using XP pro 32 bit but am considering moving to Xp 64-bit or Windows 7 (64-bit) in the future.
  2. Just did a google on the 'Secondary Logon service' and turns out that it is recommended to have this service disabled. Please see the shared links for details. Just thought other member might benefit from it at some stage http://www.digitalsupporttech.com/spdb/Startup/52548_Startup_Secondary_Logon_Service_Service_en-us.htm http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/Services/Secondary_Logon.htm
  3. Thanks everyone for your replies and help and my apologies for the late feedback. Yes I have notepad under c:\windows. Well finally found the solution was to enable the "Secondary Logon service". After enabling the service the problem was solved.
  4. I am using XP sp3 and am logged in as administrator. I need to run notepad as administrator. How when i try to do that I get the message saying C:\Windows/system32\notepad.exe The service cannot be started, either becuase it is disabled or because it had no enabled devices associated with it. Maybe some service is disabled??? Need help please.
  5. Hi, I cam across some free templates for power point. NOw in which folder so I place these so that when these appear as template options whenever I use PowerPoint 2007. Thanks.
  6. I would not use the word idiots but yes even for a simple set-up (for which we plan to hire a network administrator) we DO want to weed out the candidates and then only invite those candidates for an interview who get a decent score on the exam first. So I hope that everyone now understands the rationale why I would like to make an exam. So far, I have one question (thanks to Mr. Jinje). Can I really request help from expert forum members to help me come up with some more exams. Again something along the lines of setting up the LAN, MS-Exchange server, backup, AD, group polices, and other things. Many advance thanks to everyone for their help.
  7. Hi All, Thanks for your replies. Just need a basic exam so questions based on seting up a LAN, Active Directory, Group Policies, the IP address questions posted by MrJinje (for which I don;t know what are the correct answers), Basic questions related to setting up a MS-Exchange server, Data backup stuff. The set-up for which the network administrator will be hired is nothing fancy and I would rank it as a basic/standard set-up. There will be one router for use with the ISP so some questions can be based on that. We do not expect the person do have any kind of scripting/programming experience since that is not required. So any help will be appreciated. Thanks P.S MrJinje: What are the correct answers to your 4 questions.
  8. Thanks tain. Very useful reply. Appreciate it! Though I am slightly inclined towards a web based solution but are you aware of any products/solution that meet my requirements and which are NOT web-based?
  9. Hello, Looking at my needs (listed below) it seems like a DMS may be the right solution. However I am not very sure if DMS is really the right solution and so I seek advice for experts. Important to mention that I don't have the budget for an extremely expensive solution (budget is around $15,000/-). I hope the following scenario helps you get an idea regarding my requirements: Our organization deals with many different companies and contractors and issues various directives/notices etc. Sometimes many meetings take place as a result, and a updated status for each of the issued directive comes to light (which can be a reply from the company/contractor, a further new directive, key points discussed during the meeting and for each directive also). Now this in the worst case can go on for a long time. We would like to keep track of the status of each overall notice and then the latest status for each of the directive and the meetings that have taken place and the latest replies/status (with all the history and how many days have lapsed).... I hope the above give you some sort of idea regarding what sort of solution will work. Yes the ideal solution will work in a LAN environment with multiple users (with different access rights) using the solution but I would not rule out the possibility of first trying a small and a single user version to say how well the solution solves our requirements. The advantage in the latter case is that the investment will be very low and if we end up finding the right solution, we can then go for it's corporate/enterprise version. We probably will not prefer to go with the idea of getting developed a customized solution as it will take much more time (as compared with getting a ready made product customized according to our needs). Will be very thankful for your reply/advice and suggestion regarding which product(s) should I evaluate. BTW, am I right in assuming that probably a Document Management System is what we are looking for? Thanks.
  10. Hi, I need to make a entrance exam to filter the many applications that we have received for the post of Network Administrator. Below are some facts that you may find useful: The O/S will be Windows (most likely 2003 otherwise 2008) The Client PC's will be running Windows XP or Vista The position will also require administration of MS-Exchange server The position will require setting up the whole show (all the equipment and the LAN is already in place) The candidate will need to gave a solid understanding of Active Directory, How to make use of Group Polices, and whatever else comes to your mind We would like the person to be familiar with solutions like Wingate (or whatever is out there) to control misuse of the internet facility (simply by blocking certain sites) It will be a LAN initially (no WAN) There will be a router for internet connectivity etc.. Can I request if the experts and gurus can share some questions (along with answers ofcourse) falling under the categories of Easy, Medium, and Difficult. We want to get the right candidate and your help will be really appreciated. I will be glad to provide more details if needed. Thanks
  11. Thanks MrJinje and nitropuppy for your replies. Yes the domain controller is Windows 2003. Thanks for the tip/clue. Will bother you if I get stuck with the group policy thing.
  12. Hi, In a LAN environment (Windows 2003 as the server O/S and Windows XP and the O/S on client machines) how can we control/limit the use of USB ports and CD/DVD drives? Do we need to use some software for this or are their built-in features etc. (like the concept of Administrator, and Group policies, etc.) that can be used to achieve this? The one problem that I can think of is that if USB ports are locked/blocked then how will users be able to use their mouse and keyboards? The reason to control/limit use of USB ports is so that someone might not plug-in a USB stick and either introduce virus into the LAN or copy important and sensitive files. I know that they can easily email the files to someone but the idea is to minimize the risks even though they cannot be totally controlled. We also want to control the use CD drives so that users can not i) Burn data on CD's and ii) install software on their own Will appreciate some good and simple solution (if one exists). Thanks
  13. Thanks for the recommendation cluberti. Appreciate it.
  14. Hi, Can someone recommend a good utility which will provide at least the following details (and ideally more) about the computer on which the utility is run: Processor Model Processor Speed FSB Cache Details (L1, L2, and L3) RAM details Hardisk details Details about Graphics card Details about the Sound Card Thanks
  15. Thanks MrJinje and cluberti, Appreciate your replies and recommendations. I think I'll just do with a simple machine for the Domain Controller and a separate server for MS-Exhange. Thanks again.
  16. Exactly what do we mean when we hear/use the term "Domain Controller"? What sort of services run on the server that is designated as the Domain Controller? Is this the server on which DHCP and DNS and maybe some other services also run? What are the mininum specs for a Domain Controller server for say 30 - 50 users and would the standard version of Windows 2003 be sufficient for this? Can we have more than 1 servers in an organization but only 1 of those designated as the domain controller? And last question: Can we have MS-Exchange running on the domain controller? I know I have asked many questions in 1 post but will be grateful for a reply. Thanks.
  17. Hi and thanks for your replies. The application (running on one of the servers) will have either MS-SQL or Oracle as the back-end and will wither be a VB be client-server application or a web based application developed using ASP/PHP etc (the back-end and front-end have not been decided yet). There will be about 30 concurrent users. As far as MS-Exchange is concerned, there will as at least as many mailboxes as the # of users. Which will be around 30. Given the above, would it be a good idea to have the MS-Exchange server on the same machine as the Domain Controller (which will be running DNS, DHCP, and whatever other services). I hope the above provide you with some more details based on which you can share some recommendations. Thanks
  18. Hi, My organization currently has only 20 people but plans to have about a total of 50 people over the next 1 year. Will Windows 2003 be enough? Would the standard version of Windows 2003 server be enough or should we consider some enterprise version of Windows 2003? Basically we do not want to buy the O/S and later find out that only X number of users/concurrent users can use the LAN. Will be grateful for reply and guidance.
