  1. Latencymon reports: - current latency: 100-900μs - highest latency: 3480μs - IRL: hal.dll - 21μs - DPC: ndis.sys - 888μs Btw the program always suggests to disable power throttling, but, for what I undestood, in win7 it means to change the min processor power from 5% to 100%. The problem is that 1) it didn't do anything and 2) I wouldn't want a CPU always at max anyway, when not necessary. Anyway, the testing continues.
  2. For now I tried a config like this. It feels better, but I'll need way more testing. Btw Latencymon doesn't show problems about Nvidia and HDaudio anymore (with high Interrupt Priority), but it still reports problems from other system drivers Can I put something to low, for example Intel Management Engine?
  3. I've installed the latest Nvidia drivers, then used the MSI utility. Now I'll have to test if the situation improved or not.
  4. Thank you. This is a bit scary, though. The SATA controller is already MSI, so I don't need to touch it. A System Restore would be enough to fix the other changes, right? In theory I'd like to separate the HD Audio Controller, but I'm not sure it can be switched. Could I maybe just increase the Interrupt Priority of the GPU and audio to High?
  5. Hello, since ages my PC is suffering from audio stuttering under medium load. It seems to happen is some circumstances while doing multiple things. For example if I open the browser while listening to a video, or using Discord's voicechat (web) while playing a game, etc.. I use the Nvidia audio, so I didn't even expect this problem. I recently read online about IRQ sharing conflicts, so I checked device manager and I noticed that: Nvidia GTX 1070 + High Def audio + CPU + other PCI ports all share the same value.. is this normal? If not, how can I change it and to what? (I hope it is, because I never managed to clearly identify & resolve this issue)
  6. 2016.. ugh. What about virus definitions, though? And no, I haven't installed other antivirus programs since ages. The last one was AVG I think, before it became bloated, annoying and spyware. I tend to use Virustotal online nowadays, even if some local real time protection would be nice.. I thought I was ok with Defender XD
  7. Ah, I thought MSE was an obsolete program. And.. are you sure that WD is just an antispyware? O_o Anyway ok, if the situation doesn't improve with a future update, I'll give MSE a try.
  8. Hello, since the latest Window Defender update, all my programs are taking various seconds to start (only the first time for each session or for a while). If I disable the Real Time protection, the system works normally again. I don't see any weird usage in the various performance monitors, though. Does anyone else have this problem? I wonder how I could fix this..
  9. Well, problems 1 and 2 seem solved: 1- I tried Safe Mode and also edited some registry \Run entries missing quotations. That fixed it, it seems. 2- I tried temporally changing resolution and updating the graphic drivers.. no change. Then I just used an option to tile the windows automatically and.. they somehow unfroze. XD Problem 3 still persists, instead. I also noticed that junctions kept their previous behaviour. Why MS even bothered to modify it for simlinks? If someone has Windows 7 (up to date): can you please test the Navigation Pane issue? If you can see hidden folders, the easiest way to do it is here: "C:\Users\All Users\" is a symlink. Nav Pane jumps to "C:\ProgramData" now. "C:\Users\All Users\Documents" is a junction. Nav Pane stays in the same tree.
  10. Hello, I've recently installed 1-year-worth of Win7 Security-Only patches (due to the new Spectre exploits, mostly). It all went well, except for these things: 1- various programs set to run at Window’s start in the registry.. don’t seem to do it anymore. I’ve already tried to reset the startup option inside their settings, but nothing changed. Their keys are correctly present in the registry inside the \Run sections, as before the update. I’ve also noticed this new error in Eventviewer (related?): EventID 1530 1 user registry handles leaked from \Registry\User\[code here]: Process 936 (\Device\HarddiskVolume5\Windows\System32\winlogon.exe) has opened key \REGISTRY\USER\[code here] Error 1530 can happen at shutdown and it's usually a semi-harmless event ("by design"), but.. it's weird that I'm getting it at logon now. 2- some programs’ windows positions and sizes aren’t saved when I close and reopen them. I wonder if this is also caused by the event mentioned above. 3- I noticed another minor but annoying change about symbolic links. When traversing folders in the Navigation pane, now Windows Explorer always jumps to their original path (like a normal link), instead of remaining in its current tree structure. -- Has anyone experienced these issues too? Or have a clue on how to fix these? I already tried running sfc /scannow, but it didn’t find any integrity violation.
  11. Hello, does anyone know what's a good antivirus+firewall suite for work? For home in the past I used AVG Free + Zonealarm Free, but they became bloated and less good since a while.. so I'm not too keen about trying the paid versions. I asked an estimate to Eset, but they never replied Any suggestion?
  12. In the end I used the Media Creation Tool. It worked surprisingly well. Problem solved
  13. Hello, I have a problem with Windows Update on an Asus laptop left unused for many months. The OS is Windows 10 Home, version 1607 (build 14393). When WU runs, it hangs at 27-28%. The culprit seems to be the patch KB4467691. I tried downloading & installing it manually, but it still fails: "We couldn’t complete the updates, Undoing changes, Don’t turn off your computer" Event Viewer reports the error code 0x800F0922. Can anyone help?
  14. Ah, I use Crystal Disk Info instead of that :P (+MSI Afterburner)
  15. Thanks for replying. I use Link Shell Extension, instead. It's quite cool because it integrates with Win Explorer. (even if sadly I can't customize its menu entries). I thought about some downsides for symlinks on C: - if I uninstall a program\game, it will leave its empty (or semi) folder on the other hdd. - I'll have to actually remember to use C, despite having folders elsewhere. Not a bit deal, overall. I can't come up with other scenarios for which symlink would be worse than real folders. ¯\_(O_o)_/¯
  16. I stopped updating at the end of the last year, despite all the Spectre & Meltdown issues. ¯\_(O_o)_/¯ I've read too many problems about the new Microsoft patches (various still not fixed). At this point I don't trust very much both MS's honesty (=not sabotaging Win7) and competence (they're constantly breaking Win10 too).
  17. Hello, I have to ask a general question about Windows. I use an SSD for my system+programs and a pair of HDDs for users subfolders (Downloads,Pictures, etc), appdata for some programs (Firefox,Thunderbird,Xnview,OBS,etc..) and games. I realized that it could be a problem if I wanted to change letter\hdd. Is it a good idea to avoid pointing directly to the hdd, but instead use symbolic links in C: ? For example: - not installing games to "D:\Games" but to "C:\Games" (with a symlink) - not changing Firefox folder to something like "D:\UsersMoved\..\ProgrUserdata\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles" but leave it on "C:\Users\..\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles" (with a symlink) - not changing OBS output folder to "G:\Recordings", but leave it on C (with a symlink) - etc.. Can there be any disadvantages?
  18. Thanks but.. 32bit In the past various KB numbers were different for x64. Oops lol, I confused Win7 SP number with XP. Fixed.
  19. Err.. could you please share such list?
  20. Hi, to update Win7 in the past I used a "post-SP1 patches" maintained list (without MS crap and obsolete files), but I can't find it anymore. Do you know where I could find one now? (up-to-date) What about this program: WSUS Offline Update 10.92 Do you know if it's good & safe? I'd like to use+save only the security patches, avoiding all the new telemetry spyware and such. Btw, is it possible to get\create a "cleaned up" version of the cumulative rollup somehow?
  21. It's a bad separator, because filenames contain spaces too. If I import the file in Excel, I have to replace it every time. Anyway, as I said, it's a minor issue.
  22. Ok, "Checksum Compare" is not very convenient if you have to check multiple backup copies. I'm trying the command line version of Exactfile and it seems good, even if.. it's still in Beta since years. Thank you jaclaz. --- Some minor annoyances are that: - it doesn't have an option to output a duration\end time or a % progress. - it uses a space as a separator between hash and path, instead of "tab".
  23. Thanks for the replies. - I'm likely to get ransomware from anything: programs, attachments, vulnerabilities, etc.. It's 1+ year than I don't have an antivirus, but now I'm paranoid (yes, I make backups). I'd need some program that could act as a "watchdog", because mistakes can happen. - I wanted to use a VM to test crap, but it seems that I'd need to buy a new key for a Win7 installed there.. or am I wrong? - thanks. But I need to know if MalwareBytes can block&recognize new ransomware (and not just block executables in some known paths). No love for Nod32, instead? - I remember that the old Spybot on XP used blacklists for the hosts file too. It was nice, BUT at a certain point started causing recurring slowdowns to my entire pc. It took me forever to identify it as the source of the issues, so I'm a bit scared of touching hosts again.. O_o' - I use Ublock and NoScript in Firefox x64, so I'm usually safe enough when browsing. Another point for MB then. Avira didn't impress me much, instead. Never heard of GlassWire. I'll check it, ty. Thanks.
  24. Hello, do you know which antiviruses offer a good protection against ransomware? I've already added SRP whitelisting (Win7 Pro here), so I need some other kind of active protection. Malwarebytes, Nod32 or others? And what about a firewall to replace my free-but-clunky Zone Alarm?
