  1. Windows XP sp1ers have found a registry key setup by the program "alexa", a subsiduary of amazon (see link below). On the top link, we can see that alexa has been found to send detailed information about users to its servers, which im sure not only breaks microsofts privacy statement, but also breaks laws. My source says that the popular anti-spyware program Adaware detects elements of the installation as adware, and this registry key confirms it: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\internet explorer\extensions{c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003} The issue is the 'related links' feature of IE which appears as the 'Tools'/'Show Related Links' menu item, and a corresponding toolbar button if you added it (from the 'Customize...' link on the toolbar).Use that feature and IE will contact the Alexa servers to obtain information about other web pages which might be, er, related. Go check the Alexa web site to see if you think that is a good idea (and, just to be clear, I think it's a truly sucky idea). Or just to double-check that you haven't deliberately or unintentionally installed some of their software, or you've forgotten that you've done so. But if you don't use that menu or button, Alexa will not hear from you. No spying will take place. You may sleep soundly. 3. Put XP in your CD tray, reboot, press any key to boot from the CD, then go through and format, I recommend a full format, but a quick format will do, then select the NTFS operating system. Prior to this, make sure to back up your filez that you want to keep, before formatting. BB
  4. Well a while back, there was a guy who we all joined his forum, and he got p***ed and started hacking some sites, because he figured out that some of the admins were using the same password on his site as on their own. So he hacked the site, by using their own password. Very simple really, BB
  5. If your pot gun wont fire, its because A. You need a strong vaccum, or B. your Vaccum is too strong. Make sure the chamber is air tight. We used PVC piping, thread tape, and ducktape to create a strong seal. We also took ether, or starting fluid as its called in the south, shot it in the tiny hole we created at the end of the gun, then lit it. The potato shoots out very nicely! BB
  6. well I have another theory. Let's say someone got the administrative password by other means, say key logger, a rival forum that knew the password, or some other means. The question remains, why? I mean, techzonez is a small site. We aren't really in any competition with anyone. We maintain a friendly environment, are supportive of other forums, and basically just want to absorb new members, assist where we can, and enjoy the net. Now ask yourself this, why attack techzonez? It doesn't make sense to me... So I pose this question to you all, why do you think someone would try to hack the site? Further, I am gonna guess that it wasn't a brute force attack BW, as you are assuming reverend's password was a word, when in fact it might have not been a word at all, for example kjihuhbnjkhh200341 So that word above would be in the dictionary of the brute force attack? I think not... but I could be wrong. Further, how can you use a brute force attack if Reverend's hosts' server suspends logins after a small number of unsuccessful login attempts? I am more inclined to think that this was an educated guessing attack which can only succeed if a large number of guesses can be made in a reasonable amount of time. or through some other means... The perpetrators will be caught, and if not, then let it be a warning, once you ruffle the feathers, the next time the chicken might peck at you... BB
  7. Glad its back. Good to see it in the true form.. What the hell happened? :assshake BB

  9. I may be wrong but I have no problem networking NTFS, FAT32, and FAT16 file systems. Currently I have all three networked, though the FAT16 was a bit tricky because I haven't used 95 in over 3 years. I got them all to work fine. I think there might be problems if you are running a dual boot with ME and XP, but as far as networking and the file systems I think its ok to do.... Though again, I may be incorrect. ONe thing are you using a router or Hub? Also, have you disabled the built in firewall for the XP to ME machine? ME should see your comp just fine. What I would do is try to network ME and one XP machine. Tinker with it, change some of the IP configurations, try simple file sharing, as that is the one I have had the most success with. Check those sites that I gave in my previous post, they really are good. One more thing, can you ping bidirectionally from the ME machine? Big Booger
  10. After my purchase, I have installed the game, and it comes up with password banned? I think someone used a keygen to install their game and my password was taken. I have contacted Westwood studios but it seems they are unsympathetic, as they feel I am not being honest. ANyone out there no how to get a new password if yours has been banned? Big BOoger LOL :assshake :assshake :assshake
  11. Had the same problem when upgrading from Win98 to WinXP. What you can do is: Boot from a 95/98/ME startup disk (if your C drive isnt NTFS), edit boot.ini and change every instance of: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(*)WINDOWS replacing * by the partition where the boot files are located, usually 1 or 2. save (its readonly, so youll have to get by that) and reboot and it should work. hope this helps... http://www.computing.net/linux/wwwboard/forum/6439.html http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/8431.html Try those two links above This link says you might need to reinstall XP again. Make sure your XP cd is legitimate, as there are many pirates out there who are offering XP but it is fake. If you suspect your CD is fake contact microsoft for a replacement. Big Booger:yeahyeah

  13. I think it might tell the voltages of the PC, that will let you know if the PS is working properly. Other than that, I'd tell her to ship it back to Gateway and give me a replacement unit. If they don't agree, then I'd file a complaint with the BBB, and I would take them to small claims court. BB
  14. Depending on if I am Lanning or not.... As some of us know the lan/MP addictions run deep in some games. By the way i hope that site helps. As I can see some people didn't bother to read it. It tells you how to set up a network, how to enable file sharing, etc... It is a great article and is worth the read. I used it to set up my first XP network, post BETA version that is. That site is one of the best out there, in my opinion on networking, whilst it isn't too overwhelming for the beginner/intermediate user! BB
  15. First check the article referenced below. Make sure to read that article thoroughly. http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharin...orksetupwiz.htm Second, If that does not help simply post as such and I will try to help you further. I personally used that site when I first set up my XP LAN, worked great. Further when you go into My Network Places, what appears? Are there any folders or files? Second have you tried going to the view tab and scrolling down to the refresh? I know my laptop would never show up after I disconnected it from the LAN, and then reconnected it. I always have to hit view then refresh. It then flashes and viola, it shows up. Big Booger

  17. Hibernation Does Not Work on a Portable Computer After Windows XP Upgrade and RAM Increase (Q305905) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The information in this article applies to: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Microsoft Windows XP Professional -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SYMPTOMS If you install Windows XP on a portable computer whose primary partition is formatted with the FAT16 file system, the computer may no longer hibernate after you increase the random access memory (RAM) and then restart the computer. CAUSE This behavior occurs if the computer runs out of hard disk space for the hibernation file on the primary partition. RESOLUTION To resolve this behavior, free some additional space on the hard disk. STATUS This behavior is by design. MORE INFORMATION The space that the hibernation file requires is directly related to the amount of RAM that is in the computer. If you add more RAM, the Hiberfil.sys file must grow to match the total RAM. Adding more RAM also automatically increases the size of the Pagefile.sys file, which by default is 1.5 times the amount of RAM. Adding 256 megabytes (MB) of RAM increases the Pagefile.sys file by 384 MB. If the Hiberfil.sys file grows by 256 MB and the Pagefile.sys file grows by 384 MB, the free space on the hard disk shrinks by 640 MB. There must still be at least 740 MB of free space to allow hibernation
  18. as you can see by the following, it would seem that some compaq models have problems with hibernation in XP SP19866.EXE - 1607K - November 26, 2001 TITLE: Presario 2700 Series Notebooks System ROM Update VERSION: F.08 LANGUAGE: US English - Reduces the time to resume from Suspend(S3) mode. - Fixes the F5 & F6 no scan code issue. - Fixes incorrect reporting by power meter applet. - Fixes the Hibernation looping issue. 19. In addition to Rev's comments, I would like to add the following: Its a "Compaq Presario!" All jokes aside, have you tried a BIOS update for your MOBO? Have you tried to upgrade all of your drivers? If not I suggest you do so. If you'd give a model number, series etc... I might be able to help you further. If you need to know your system information without opening your Computer and by the way voiding your warranty, I suggest you use Belarc Advisor: http://www.belarc.com/Programs/advisor.exe There is the download, very small. It will open up a webpage with all your info. Copy down all the hardware information. Including your cdrom, Motherboard, NIC, etc... Then go to the manufacturers website and download the latest firmware, drivers etc... Also, check the compaq site http://web14.compaq.com/falco/sp_list.asp?cat=Desktop Find the latest files for your PC there. Further check the site's FAQ and support for further information concerning your PC. If none of this works, never go into hibernation. Big Booger One other thing, how much free disk space do you have available? I believe AFAIK that Hibernation needs a minimum of 200MB, but again I am not 100% positive. BB

  21. I would bet that this is a power supply issue. Try adding another power supply one with an external switch, the one that you have to turn on in the back before the PC button switch will work!. I would imagine that this would fix the issue. However, this might also.... Csinsm32 , CLEANSWEEP, CSINSM32.EXE CSINSM32.EXE Norton Cleansweep Install Monitor. Requires CSINJECT.EXE. This also runs MONWOW in the background. Delete norton and see if this s*** stops.... seems like that might be the culprit. additionally check the CMOS battery, make sure its not dying. Big Booger
  22. http://www.ocsystem.com/en10baytowca1.html US based, but it is not the Scorpio model. If I were to buy a case now, after buying my enermax case i would go with this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=2008708924 Though this would be a close second, the filter and three speed fans are a nice addition http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=2008984953 Big Booger
