  1. First question answered elsewhere. Amp has to be bi-directional and cover below 40 MHz, neither was covered with the amp I have. NO problem, I can work around it. I understrand this, but why and how can the CC HE (head end) know or care about the NIC MAC address? Why isn't the modems address enough? After all, it is the first link from the CC.Related question; why is a router called a "Gateway" when in fact the 'modem' is the device that actually 'sees' the internet first (at the customers house)? If there is no router, what is considered the "Gateway" then, the NIC?
  2. Correct on the first. Safe Mode, I never thought about that since I hardly ever have to use it. If I boot into safe mode, how would that change/help things? LLXX; I have that UBCD4W that I'm going to work on. How can that help (if it works)?
  3. I have had DSL for years and never had any experiance with cable modems. I have a few generic questions about them. The one in use is the Motorola SB5100 on what was Aldelphia, now Time Warner cable. There is also a Linksys router in the mix. 1. Adding a broadband amp (US made Winegard 40-1000MHz) seems to kill the modem. Is it because of excessive signal or is there a need for coverage below 40 MHz? Mind you, this isn't one of those cheap no-name Chineese made wonders. It is only a 10db gain, so I doubt it is a excessive signal issue. I would say there is around +5-10 dbmV of signal with the amp. 2. I was told (by TW support) that you have to leave the configuration of your NICs' to "Obtain a IP address automatically". Is this true? I perfer to assign each conputer with a static IP address. With DSL, I have no issue here, so I don't understand why cable would be different. What does the output of the router have to do with what the modem sees?? Hope all of that makes sense.
  4. This isn't my box. I can't remember the exact message, but running XP home sp2, I renamed the admin account using that hidden 'control userpasswords2' panel (as I have done many times in 2k) by clicking on "users must enter a username......" checkbox, highlighting the admin account, clicking on Properties, and changing the "admin" name to a custom user name. Gave that account a password and unchecked the privious checkbox regarding entering a user name. Then, I deleted the existing custom admin. account. I logged off, but when I tried to log back on I received this message about privilges or something like that. Mind you, it's not a password or user name issue, this I never saw before. I guess I screwed myself as I can get into the box now. Is there any programs that would boot from a CD (since that is the only way I can think of gaining access to the HDD other than removing it from this box and temporary added it to another box that would allow me some ability to change permissions or whatever needs to be done?? Hope that made sense.
  5. If it is hooked to a PS2 port, why would you install USB drivers??
  6. That wasn't clear, but I see exactly what you mean. I already had a uncompressed version of sp2 that I wondered if there was any benifit of doing it that way. Thanks again.
  7. Yes, I figured that out and it is a nice plus. I wish the program would create a new folder with the modified files instead of you doing it before hand. I have forgotten to do this three different times so far and wind up coping the files from the CD all over again. But, to sum it up, the iso option just makes it easier to burn a copy though if you wanted to add more files later you couldn't? Now, for the 2nd question;
  8. It won't be until Monday before I go back there again.
  9. It's just a conveinance? The comparision was to using, say, Nero and taking the separate files and making a bootable CD with the addition of that boot.ima file.
  10. Thanks for the replies, but none of that made any sense. Maybe you don't understand the question. This choice of making a "bootable ISO file" vs NOT checking that option is what I wanted to know the difference of. IOW's pros and cons of both methods...................
  11. t39??
  12. Under the "Remove Components" section, this "Compatibilty" dialog that pops up, I'm not sure about these choices. What exactly are these for?: 1. Internet Information Services 2. NT Backup Volume / Shadow Copy 3. Prefetch functionality 4. Windows Activation & Sysprep 5. Windows Server Core Services
  13. The questions; 1. What are the differences between choosing a bootable iso version and not checking that option? Is one version better than the other (smaller/faster etc.)? Does it matter? 2. Can a already expanded service pack be used instead of the d/l'ed .exe? Hope that made sense. Thanks
  14. You have seen violet adapters? I was told there are only the green (mouse) versions.
  15. I completely forgot that M$ decided to hide that feature in FP!
  16. It's a new card. I believe it was used on another box also with no problem. It was also tried on a DSL internet connection with no known issue.
  17. Thanks for the input. This isn't my system or I wouldn't have a USB keyboard in the first place............
  18. It reconizes the USB mouse (with a adapter) in the PS2 port ok.
  19. I might of been wrong about the "cable unplugged" part. The computer is 8 miles away. It will be a few days before I can't troubleshoot it again.
  20. Because it is a USB keyboard or because it is a Comtrash USB keybord? Or could it be a bios issue on the MB?
  21. Thanks for the welcome. If I remember it correctly, I believe I get a 'network cable unplugged' error. The modem 'sees' the computer though. Anyway, there is no internet access.
  22. I am trying to troubleshoot a very slow cable internet connection by bypassing the router. When I connect the NIC directly into the cable modem (Motorola) the computer doesn't see the modem, when it sees the router and the internet ok (but very slow). It is connected with a 25' patch cable (I will try another cable later). I have power cycled the modem and re-boot the puter and set obtaining a IP address automatically, but still nothing. All the lites on the modem are lit. Any ideas? Running 2k w/sp4
  23. Using a USB leyboard with a PS2 adapter (not to tie up a USB port), the system doesn't reconize the keyboard. It does with a USB mouse using a PS2 adapter. It is a Compaq keyboard if that matters. I will try the keyboard on another box when I can and try the other adapter also. In the mean time any ideas?
  24. I can't find for the life of me any way to bypass entering your password everytime the computer boots using XP Home (sp2). I'm not familar with the 'home' version as I have only used the 'Pro' version a few times. 2k (which I perfer) and XP Pro allow a password and a provision to "remember password" at login time. Doesn't the 'Home' version have the same??
  25. I haven't read through all of the 'Beginners Guide' yet, but I didn't see anything on this which I am a little surprised. It only showed once, when the destop appeared for the first time (I believe after all the data entry was completed).
