My dad needs a new video card. it must be agp and and inexpensive as possible. His ati 9800 pro card has died on him. I looked around online and am having a hard time finding comparable cards for not to much. I dont think he wants to spend over 100.

I was going to suggest this $109 AR

the 9800 pro might actually be more powerful though...

This is the best sub $100 card right now $90 AR, PCI-E though but "twice" as powerful as the 6800XT

conclusion AGP is dead or quickly dying, not worth buying an agp card imo.

That's absurd. He never mentioned what his father uses the PC for. If he's not gaming he can EASILY get by with a sub $50 AGP card. Hell, the 9800 was overkill if he wasn't using the PC for gaming.

A 6800XT card would be much faster than a 9800 Pro.

Only because it's not being put in new PCs or new motherboards. There are still plenty older AGP based systems out there and plenty of people using them who won't need PCIe for some time to come.

cumminbk: What does he use the PC for?

Unless you play SIMS 2, then the 9800 Pro will outperform the 6800XT easy... no joke...

You could probably find a ATI X700 for around 85$(CAN)

The 9800pro still beats it of course. But your father don't really care about GPU performance i guess.

no he does play some video games but he plays games 2-3 years old so he is alright with an older system to play the games on. He is only interested in agp since he does not want to upgrade the entire system.

Not likely. Given that a 6600GT is faster than a 9800 Pro, and the 6800XT is on par or slightly faster than the 6600GT (slower memory clocks, but wider memory bus)...I'd say the 6800XT is definitely faster than a 9800 Pro.

Is what I got, ... just saw that it´s only with AA on max. that the 9800pro outperforms the 6600GT. I came across the link the day before yesterday when I was looking for a friend if it would make sence to upgrade his girlfriends PC with a 6800GS.

Any way, thanx for that link, I will pass the info... :)

Actually with AA the 6600GT holds a pretty good lead against the 9800 Pro in all of the benchmarks in that article. :)

The 6800GS would definitely be a good purchase for your friend. Those slightly outperform 6800GTs.

A couple of quick searches tells me that of the cards mentioned in this thread you should be looking at either a 6600GT or 6800XT based card. They run about the same price. You definitely don't want to get a card with GDDR2 anyway. :)
