November 28, 200619 yr whats everyones thoughts on thisThere was a rumor for some time now, that a large capacity disc will be developed, but nothing on-topic has proven so yet. Now, Hitachi-Maxell is planning to organize a showcase this week, and present to the open public their new 300GB holographic CD’s. It does seem like this is Science-Fiction, but I can assure you it’s not.We are all asking ourselves what would be the advantages and disadvantages of this removable media. Within advantages, I could mention the transfer rate of 20MB/s, the high capacity and the multitude of operations that could be fulfilled with the help of it, like large amounts of backups, uncompressed media (movies and audio) that could be easily edited later, and many many more.Disadvantages? The price, of course. It’s expected that one holographic disc will cost somewhere between $100 and $125, and the optical drive that will be able to operate them will go up to $15.000! And wait, there’s more for the future. In 2008, InPhase plans a second-generation 800GB rewritable optical disc with data transfer rates of about 80MBbps, with plans to expand its capacity to 1.6TB by 2010.Amazing. What do you think about the high capacity disks? November 28, 200619 yr And what happens when they apply technology like what Sainul Abideen has worked out to this? Dual layer! There would be no limit to the amount of data that, let's say the government, could be keep on you. Video quality!?!? 'Brave New World' feelies come to life. How would large, data-centric, businesses benefit? Who would need one of our standard HDs? They wouldn't hold anywhere near the same amount of information. Meh! Nobody will need that much. Just don't quote me.DL
November 29, 200619 yr I am so sick of hearing about holographic technologies. They told the same crap 5 years ago and every now and then, they tell us Look!! We can fit 500GB of data on a single disk. WoW! I want one right now... where can I get it.It's gonna be available in a few months.... ..... 5 years later, still no affortable unit (under 10K $)
November 29, 200619 yr Maintaining a certin level of hype helps companies attract investors and drive up stock prices. It's just marketing.
November 29, 200619 yr ya i read about this a while ago. is just amazing how big disks can get now... but the price is just completely unacceptable regardless of the technology.
November 29, 200619 yr Only 300Gb, and at 20MB/s?2 terabyte multi-plattered 5.25" Server drives have existed for quite some time... though they aren't exactly cheap, but I believe they were in the $20,000USD range the last time I checked. As for 3.5" units I'm not sure but I found this 750Gb one: http://www.seagate.com/cda/products/discsa...081,745,00.html
