m16si Posted October 8, 2006 Posted October 8, 2006 (edited) I have one 200 GB SeaGate barracuda (ATA)Today my friend gave me a working ExcelStor 60GB 7200rpm (ata) HDD for free...So i said why not installing it to my machine to increase space....When i installed HDD windows xp doesn't recognize it....But BIOS and startup regognize it!!!!!I also tried Hiren's BOOT disk and Partition Magic 8.05 under hirens boot disk recognises hard disk drive !Why doesn't my Windows XP recognize it ?Could it be a service under SERVICES.MSC ? (i have most of them turned off)Is it because i changed my primary HDD to Primary and not dynamic ?Oh yes and the HDD isn't damaged!!!! My friend had it installed and it worked.. until he needed more space .......Thnx Edited October 8, 2006 by m16si
Zxian Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Logical Disk Manager maybe? That's a service that should always be running.Like N1K said - do you see it in the Disk Management? If you do, does it have a drive letter assigned to it?
LLXX Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 I have Logical Disk Manager service disabled, and I can still swap HDDs with no problem.also tried Hiren's BOOT disk and Partition Magic 8.05 under hirens boot disk recognises hard disk drive !Have you tried partitioning it from there?
Jeremy Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 I have Logical Disk Manager service disabled, and I can still swap HDDs with no problem. So what? Of course you can with healthy and normally working HDs. But it sounds like the drive needs to be formatted again, which LDM could help him achieve easily within Windows.

N1K Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Humm, a bit complicated situation..You said that you can see it in the partition magic. What is the status of it, can you format it from there?

Takeshi Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 The 1st partition should be primary and active.
N1K Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 The 1st partition should be primary and active. Why active?
Ctrl-X Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 I'd create a primary partition on the 2nd hard disk. Don't make it active unless you want to boot from it.
Takeshi Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 It's not strictly necessary to set it active but it won't matter either way, just makes it easier for the future if the user wants to install an OS. If the BIOS always looks for the first HD to boot, then it won't matter either if the 2nd HD has an active partition. No big deal.
