WPI 5.3 Release!

Windows Post-Install Wizard (WPI for short) is a hypertext application designed for giving users choice. While Windows XP offers many ways of customizing the setup process out of the box, its major drawback is the lack of being able to select which applications an end user may install. In the past, end users and administrators needed to either download the files manually, or create overly complex scripts that could only be used once. WPI allows you to create one image, which can then be custom configured, and optionally, automated, so that end users can install any applications that have been configured into WPI.

Here is the 5.3 changelog:

WPI ChangeLog. Modifications by Mark Ritter (mritter)
===============================================================================

* Sadicq updated the Source Source option to add line numbers and the ability
to copy/paste the code with a right-click.

* Built theme 'Glossy_Horiz' to get extra space in Config wizard for 1024x768
screen resolutions.

* Added 'Show Extra Buttons' to Options -> Miscellaneous tab to show/hide the
Options, Config, View Source, and About WPI buttons in one step.

* Fixed small bug when uncheck category checkbox, it would uncheck all items,
including forced items.

* Forced install items are now always checked and disabled so can not be
unchecked. Selected items are now changed to a different color to stand out
better. Change color in theme folder's wpi.css under .chktxt.
Submitted by zorphnoq.

* Classic and Glossy images updated.

* Added the sort order value next to the Name of the program in the
Navigation pane in Config Wizard. And put a little extra space between
lines for easier reading.

* Fixed a bug in Config wizard with Navigation pane jumping around in long
lists.

* Fixed bug when going from a long config list to a shorter one not clearing
out the previous one first.

* Fixed bug when moving from Options or Config to Show Source, Begin Install
gadget was either hidden or not hidden correctly.

* The Manual button has been removed. Added About button in it's place.

* Options wizard now is dynamically tabbed and has gone through a major
cosmetic update to bring it up to "modern standards".

* Removed Debug Mode.

* Increased the size of the wizards for 1024x768 screens.

* Added theme-based folder gadgets for the file requesters. In the themes
folders: Folder_Out.jpg, Folder_Over.jpg, Folder_Down.jpg, Folder_Disabled.jpg

* When add a new category in config wizard it is now added to the drop-down
list immediately.

* New option to randomly select a theme.

* Fixed the language codes to the proper ones. Will affect the loading of
some languages, but will default to English.

* WPI will now start with the user's native language, if available, but can
still be manually switched. (sadiqc)

How to make a winnt.sif file.

Here is a small tutorial on how to add an app to WPI!

Ok this is a sample (Very simple) configuration for Windows Defender Beta 2

This assumes you have all of the WPI files either in the WPI folder at the root of your Windows cd or all of the WPI folders (Common, Graphics, WPIScripts, Tools, Install and Themes) and the file WPI.hta at the root of your cd.

Remember this is just the most basic and required entries for a program!

#1 Place the desired app in the install folder. (In this case WindowsDefender.msi)

#2 Run WPI.hta and choose “Config”

#3 Choose at the very top above the config section “Add”

#4 Enter in the name section “Windows Defender” ßNo quotes! Then click on any other section of the config area to activate the rest of the wizard.

#5 You will notice the Unique ID section gets automatically configured for you.

#6 All apps are selected to be installed by default right from the start so if you don’t want it selected by default you must uncheck this box.

#7 Choose a category for your app to be displayed in. If you want the app to be displayed in a category you don’t see simply chose other and a box will appear that will allow the entry of you choice.

#8 In the Command 1 section browse to the installation package you want to have installed. You will get (%CDROM%\WPI\Install\WindowsDefender.msi) to make this work from either a stand-alone CD or form a windows CD You should change this to “%wpipath%\Install\WindowsDefender.msi” Once again NO quotes!

#9 Add the necessary switches for the program to run silently i.e. %wpipath%\Install\WindowsDefender.msi /qn

#10 Select the Save and then the Exit buttons and you have now configured your first app!

How large is your config.js because I have the same issue, have a large config also.

Posted a topic about this , please reply in there if you got this large config.js too.

Thanks for the new release! I hope it fixes our bugs. :D

I just updated the german language file and attached it. I think there are a lot of unused strings in the translations now, because you worked on the optionswizard and a lot of explanations are not used now. Perhaps you can clean up the translations for 5.4. :P

EDIT: Did a first test to look for bugs, but there are no bugs!!! Very good work! Everything installs fine. :)

Attached translation moved to translations thread.

  • 3 weeks later...

I just made a custom mshta.exe to get rid of the old icon explorer gives to wpi.hta (*.hta).

It's something extremely easy, but I thought I should share it with you ...

Btw, it's about 3 times bigger than the original  but I like the new icon.
