So, I'm curious what's the minimun processors I can use on Windows 98 & 98SE.

Keep in mind, I'm not talking neo 98 nor lite 98. Just Microsoft's Standard 98 & 98SE

Thanks to MDGx's website, I found out that I'm using the final versions of 98 &

98 SE.

Here's what processors I have starting on my 98 Computers;

Windows 98 First Edition Build 4.10.1998

EXPLORER.EXE

KERNELL32.DLL

mmtask.tsk

MPREXE.EXE

MSGSRV32.EXE

Windows 98 Second Edition Build 4.10.2222 A

EXPLORER.EXE

KERNELL32.DLL

mmtask.tsk

MPREXE.EXE

MSG.32.EXE

MSGLOOP.EXE

MSGSRV32.EXE

I have a Windows XP computer as well, however, I'll just post the Windows

XP Minimum Processors startup on the XP Forum.

In regards, to Windows 98 & 98 SE, can I disconnect anything else?

Unreproductable. Maybe the minimum __processes__ needed ?

I have 7. (+graf driver).

None of them is "MSG.32.EXE" or "MSGLOOP.EXE".

Beware: CTL-ALT-DEL does NOT reveal ALL of them. On my PC it shows only 3 (+graf driver).

Well, the absolute minimum processes are:

KERNEL32.DLL

MSGSRV32.EXE

EXPLORER.EXE (or some other shell)

Add MPREXE.EXE if you have network installed.

Your sound programs might need MMTASK.TSK and/or DDHELP.EXE (not sure about these two).

P.S. Check those MSG.32.EXE and MSGLOOP.EXE with some antivirus!!!

btw.

process = program, application;

processor = Central Processung Unit (CPU)

msgloop.exe and msg.32.exe are driver files for a crystal audio sound card, although i dont know if they really need to be running.

Never had one of those cards. Let me guess, MSG.32.EXE is the mixer, and MSGLOOP.EXE is related to MIDI synthesis, right?

I appolgize for my terminology error

The 98 SE Computer is for DJing so, I would guess, that's why msgloop.exe and msg.32.exe are running.

The 98 First Edition, is only for the Internet.

I'm not using msconfig btw. I use a process starter to view everything running on my computers.

Upon startup, 98SE offers 99% free, and, 98 First Edition states 98% free, so, I guess I'm fine.

How can I disconnect MREXE.EXE completely from Windows 98 SE?

I'm never going to use this computer for anything that pertains to the Internet.

Win98, 98SE + ME all install just fine on a 486 X86 CPU.

But some of these OSes may need this setup switch:

All you need are explorer.exe and systray.exe

you dont have to have systray running all the time i sometimes stop it and i have no problems

I have problems w/out systray and some websites say it's problematic too.

I would always disable systray for the mere fact that you can access what it provides easily through the command line anyway. Only reason I run it right now is due to not knowing the command to access the 'stop hardware device' applett from the command line. Otherwise I would flat out keep it disabled.

Never experienced any problems with it disabled. It would free up about 2-3% resources however being disabled.

I am curious however, I_D.. what problems were you experiencing with it off?
