ethreal, its more than justa port scanner

Ethereal is great but I personally wouldn't classify it as a port scanner. It is used for passive monitoring, not active probing.

Are you sure that it even has the ability to port scan? I've never tried...

i could never use anything other than nmap.

and even the crudest IDS will seriously flip out at seeing all those sequential tcp connects

for a good connection monitor, windows already has one.

make a file called netstat.cmd and put this in it:

start /b /normal /wait %windir%\system32\netstat.exe -a 1>netstat.txt
start /b %windir%\notepad.exe netstat.txt

whenever you want to view your current connections/listening ports just dbl click netstat.cmd

is it possible that ethereal wont be able to capture a packet(especified kinda packet)?

i remember that packet capturing tolls like ethereal that works with winpcap have a weak point that they cant capture some special packets.is that right?

if yes is there any capturing program that doesnt have this flaw?

It may not be the best out there, but free is a good price. FoundStone SuperScan4 is one I use all the time.
