does anyone know what files are installed when WMI core is installed in Win98 ?

I was after a list of files installed on the system when installing Windows management for Win9x

i realize that this is a very old thread but one of the files included in wmi9x.exe that's important to me is the smbdpmi.exe file.

SMBDPMI.EXE is the SMBIOS DOS driver as posted in the description in the SMBDPMI.PIF file, also bundled in wmi9x.exe.

In Win95/98 after running WMI9X.EXE and installing the WBEM 1.5 files, run the SMBDPMI.PIF file to make smbdpmi.exe create the smbios.dat & smbios.eps files. Those two files contain info about the computer/motherboard brand & model and the kind of BIOS it uses.

I found out that the DirectX Diagnostic tool (dxdiag.exe) from at least DirectX8 gets the "System Manufacturer", "System Model" and BIOS information from the smbios.dat file and attempts to identify the kind of computer you are using.

OK, it's not clear if your posting was "FYI" or whether you're seeking the 'wmi9x.exe' file. I think it's the former, however, if it's the latter, the file is available at :

I'm also interested by LLXX's suggestion to "Unpack the installer". Any idea how to do that? Neither TugZip nor 7-Zip can extract contents from this file.

Have you tried Universal Extractor?

Last version doesn't run with Win9x.

Nope. Just tried it, and the UE (v. 1.6.2) cannot do it either... Sorry!

but in what is it different?

Last version provided on the legitime site is 1.6.1

Exactly. I did manage to find some portable 1.6.2 off some site, but the .exe, although again a compiled AutoIt script, was not signed by the author, and gave a wrong version number.

"Universal Extractor 1.6.2" - did not match any documents.

but yes, could be the last version with upgrades in 'bin' folder.

I do it by myself also, for innounp, UnRAR, ...

I took a look at this file wmi9x.exe that comes from that link. It identifies as some kind of modified Wise package. But none of the Wise unpackers I have handy would touch it. That includes the most reliable one, E_WISE.

Latest 7zip (7zip.exe) deconstructs it to a set of installer resources (with some date/times preserved):

That large file identifies to a MSVC++ executeable of unknown compression, which 7zip and E_WISE won't touch. On a hunch I threw it into Wise Setup UnPacker v0.90A (WUN.EXE) and it almost extracts (date/times lost):

It would certainly take some time and effort to parse this out further. Don't have the time myself at this moment.

If I remember correctly, this installer places a large set of files and registry entries in the system.

I would suggest installing it on an imaged (roll-back-able) 9x test machine with a registry dump and filelist, BEFORE and AFTER.

P.S. I just noticed in the preview that the CODEBOX does not have scrollbars! Did something else change with the forum software again?

It seems gora withdrew it. It was an unofficial update of 1.6.0, so it's parallel to 1.6.1.

I do update mine by hand, too, usually, so that I've decided to keep my tweaked 1.6.2...

Had all but forgotten about this. PM gora if you want more info about it, though.

Sorry guys I asked the wrong question.

What I should have asked, do you know the proper command line switches to extract the files?

If someone create a inf file I can add the whole package to U98SESP3

Here they are.

/T test mode

/X pathname extracts files into pathname

/Z pathname extracts files into pathname and reboots

/S silent install

/M prompts for windows, system, temp dirs

/M=filename specifies a value file similar to /d above,

but for standard variables

/M1 same as /m plus it prompts before any file that is self-registered

/M2 reserved for internal use by Wise during debugger sessions
