galahs
So what is the advantage of using the unofficial Q891711 patch over Zerts?
MDGx
Anonymous author sent this feedback:I've had OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4522 and the other updated files on one of my PCs for quite awhile w/o noticing any bad side effects, but a few days agoI came across an issue that indicates even 2.40.4522 is not 100%compatible with Win98SE. I was trying to install Merriam-Webster'sDictionary (College Edition, the software is from 2003 or so etc.) underWin98SE and the InstallShield installer refused to run. Swapping the2.40.4518 files back in fixed the problem and the dictionary installedjust fine. Swapping again, back to 2.40.4522 (and the other updatedfiles), caused the problem to reappear.Anyone else experienced problems with the files installed by OLEUP.EXE?Please post here if you do.Thanks.OLE:http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#OLE* Unofficial Windows 95/98/ME OLE Automation Libraries (DLLs) 2.40.4528 OLEAUT32.DLL, OLEDLG.DLL, OLEPRO32.DLL + STDOLE2.TLB Update:http://support.microsoft.com/?id=259403Direct download [512 KB, English]:http://www.mdgx.com/files/OLEUP.EXEDirect download [515 KB, Italian]:http://www.mdgx.com/files/ITOLEUP.EXE______________________________________galahs:So what is the advantage of using the unofficial Q891711 patch over Zerts?Anonymous author will probably answer this question.I'll post it here when he does.HTH______________________________________darkon:Yesterday I installed the time update, OLE update and the WMF9 patch (they're the recent ones)... and after that winamp wouldn't work anymore. It had a problem with winamps in_mp3.dll. This dll is in it's own directory under winamp, so it has nothing to do with windows....Reinstalling winamp wouldn't work.I had to reinstall windows over the old one (and then install the unofficial SP + IE6.1) to get everything to where it was. I would think it has to do with the WMP, since it also plays mp3's, but I had no clue where to look for... (specially since the dll wasn't even in one of the windows folders).erpdude8 is the author of the WMP9 UR1 [if that's the patch you are referring to].I'm sure he will answer your question when he'll be back to the forum.* WMP9URP: Unofficial Windows Media Player 9.0 (WMP9) Update Rollup Pack (URP) for Windows 98/98 SE/ME installs ALL previously released WMP9 Hotfixes, Patches + Updates [8.56 MB, English]:http://www.mdgx.com/spx/WMP9URP.EXEHow to install WMP9 on Windows 98:http://erpman1.tripod.com/cmptips2.htmlHTH

jimmsta
I've dedicated this entire night to getting Windows 9xPP v5 off the ground. This topic saved me literally DAYS of searching. I praise everyone that's keeping this forum tidy and up-to-date! On that note, Win9xPP will be an essential-patches-only ordeal, so that most languages can be offered, which should make many users of the package very, very happy. soporific
The only thing you could do to make this thread absolutely perfect in every way possible, is to put the date of the latest update in the second line of the thread title, like i do with my complete updates list for Win98se. It will save me a little time because i check so often, because you're da man for keeping my projects up-to-date!Cheers man.
PROBLEMCHYLD
There is a bug that can be seen in the service packs for 98 (Gold) and Me - the Windows version diplayed on desktop isWindows 98H4.10.1998instead of Windows 98 4.10.1998I'm not sure where is the root of this problem, maybe in some unofficial fix?It should be corrected in the next (beta) release of these service packs.PetrOr as picture: It looks really terrible.the problem come after you install 98KRNLUP.EXE
winxpi
I just took a look at the complete list of updates.Of course it's easy to find out which the newest version of the cumulative IE6 update is,because it is reported at the Patchday Website. But what I never understood is how do I find out if there is a new rootsupdate "Rootsup" ?Its quite cool that kb925672 can be installed without modification, XML Core Services 4.0 SP2 is really supported by win98?BTW I believe MS07-017 "Vulnerabilities in GDI Could Allow Remote Code Execution" the KB925902 also affects Win9.8As some of the updated files are user32.dll and gdi32.dll which are also used by 98. Root certs update is not on the list of 98/ME critical updates at WU:http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/Therefore M$ does not properly notify users that they actually need to update the root certificates, especially if one needs to access WU or WUC web sites for other updates, which [how presumtious] requires M$ IE 5/6 + ActiveX enabled. The only references I found at M$:http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#RCF2. GDI .ANI exploit described in MS07-017 *does* affect 9x Oses.Until now, U891711 was the only fix available, but that was just another TSR taking up memory and CPU cycles [temporary fix]:http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=58780But now [thanks to the anonymous author], we have the new USER32.DLL + USER.EXE 4.10.2233 98SE fix [permanent fix]:http://www.mdgx.com/files/Q891711.TXTFound here:http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#9SUDownload fix:http://www.mdgx.com/files/Q891711.EXEHere's the answer to your other question:http://www.msfn.org/board/?s=&showtopi...st&p=650655HTH

night side
Please, the update Q891711.EXE (version in English) is not installing the archives user.exe and user32.dll, and yes, erasing them. This is happening in my Brazilian Windows 98 SE. This did not occur before, therefore always I bring up to date the system with your updates. Since already I am thankful for the excellent work, for this magnificent support that nor the Microsoft would be capable to make. It forgives my English, I used the Google. Maybe main cause is this. Edited May 11, 2007 by Max_04

Since already I am thankful for the excellent work, for this magnificent support that nor the Microsoft would be capable to make. It forgives my English, I used the Google. This unofficial update does not erase any files. This update backs up (copies) your files from C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM : USER32.DLL and USER.EXE as USER32.O98 and USER.O98 .After that, this update copies the new USER32.DLL and USER.EXE 4.10.2233 to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM .Last step: you need to reboot when done.U891711 and old Microsoft (official) Q891711 updates should not interfere with this newer unofficial update, the files are completely different. But these files should be translated into Brazilian Portuguese [thank you Max_04], otherwise you will see all messages in English.Google translation from English to Portuguese:Este update unofficial não apaga nenhumas limas.
