Eiger - A Mountain for MS to CLimb?

Gape, MGDx, Tihiy and co seem to have really got MS's feathers ruffled - so much so, they are going to bring out a Lite version of XP just for users and companies with W98 (see home page).

Would you buy it?

I doubt that I would, unless it was priced at less that £15 ($30).

Of course, it depends what they leave in and what they leave out. Watch out for the same trick they pulled on the old USSR countries, bringing out a special OS which only works on low-res, max 800x600.

I think it's a great idea...just think of the security issues that still exist with the way Win9x handles networks for instance. With Eiger, you can finally move all your old client computers to something that supports Active Directory and Group Policy's...very nice. You can close of NetBIOS, use NTFS, and drivers for hardware will become less of a headache as they all could possibly use the same drivers now.

I don't think it's designed to extend the life of a consumer computer that is running Win9x...that's been discussed. But for a company that needs a few client computers that can log onto the network and use basic things like Word or just the internet, it's a great idea.

Of course the big issue is going to be price...no use spending $200 for an OS when you could just buy a whole new computer for $400 including a better OS.

I would like to learn more about Eiger. However, I won't agree to licensing or activation terms that I feel are intrusive, oppressive, and humiliating.

I use 98 SE and unfortunately XP currently. I've never accepted XP EULA or activation terms, but I still use XP legitimately.

Tihiy, sure, it's a overhyped, bloated, no running, overpriced piece of junk software, the only thing it's good for is making 98se better! JMHO. I've reverted more people to 98se than I have 98se to XP because of all the probs it's caused them on their PC's, many of them were running it for 2yrs or more & constantly having software/hardware probs before going back to 98se. Now, thanks to you, Gape, & MDGx, it's even better!

Well you could do what the article is saying and use NetBEUI, but then you're gonna run into a wall when you have more than a few dozen computers. Besides, while NetBEUI is a formidable protocol, converting an entire network over to escape the problem of NetBIOS is even more of a time waster than upgrading to a more modern OS...that, and it's not 'officially' supported in the current WinXP.

To use XP w/out having to activate [WPA], do what I did:

1. buy legitimate copy of XP Home, Pro or OEM [OEM is Pro but much cheaper and is bundled with PC hardware]

or get MSDN subscription CD [kinda expensive if u don't own or work for a computer/IT related business] with VLK edition [if u do, then skip step 2].

2. get corpfiles + keygen [don't ask... go google].

3. create unattend.txt [a.k.a. winnt.sif] + tweaks scripts:

http://www.mdgx.com/xp1.htm#IXPA

4. burn XP boot CD/DVD with SP2 + all current hotfixes slipstreamed + unattended/tweak scripts + apps/tools:

http://unattended.msfn.org/

5. install away. ;)

This is NOT meant to encourage piracy. I hate piracy.

As long as u own a *genuine* XP license, whatever u do with it on *your* personal computer is strictly your own business, and well within legal boundaries.
