  1. Hi! Is this possible? I need to upgrade graphics card so want to move to PCI-E at same time. Most sellers say the PCIE cards are for XP only, but I understand this is microsoft dirty dealing with WHQL - right? But does win98 work with PCIE? I tried to search forum for this but no luck so sorry if this is an old issue. Any help at all much appreciated
  2. Does anybody know - will I be able to use FSX on win98se? This new sim, due around christmas, will be the greatest flight sim ever, with pedestrians cars and a real-life graphical experience, incomparable to anything which has gone before. I do NOT want to have to fork out for XP on top of the rip-off price which the sim will undoubtedly sell for. Any informed details would be much appreciated
  3. That's great, MDGx. Thanks very much.
  4. I never got that background texture thing with 98se, it just never worked for me. Then I was designing myself a more colourful desktop and stumbled on it - yeah, you need the windows Appearance colour to contrast with the Background colour. Loving the Stone effect. Yeah, I know. I'm pathetic....
  5. I too find win98se with the latest upgrades a fantastic OS, all that I want or need from an OS. I do fear it would be a total disaster without the great support which the guys on this site provide. MS are not very loyal to their purchasers. I will never buy Vista. I will keep 98se for all my uses and if necessary get a XBOX 360 for gaming. Sure, MS still win, but they dont rip me off so much. In fact, Xbox was a loss-leader and the 360 may end up being too. Which makes its buyers winners
  6. We're all in agreement here, I think. Win98se is a great OS, I love it as much for what it HASN'T got as for what it has - anyone with an XP system, try checking in your local/temp folder sometime, millions of useless files accumulating purposelessly. I just checked some other purchases, and found - unnoticed till now - that Richard Burns Rally - a fantastic rally sim - is also allegedly for 2000/XP. Works ok for me ( I mean me, not ME!)
  7. I'm sure we all check what OSs software will work with before buying. Last week, seduced by a rave revue in Computeractive, I went in Game and looked for GTR FIA - an amazing state of the art racing simulation. Imagine my disappointment to read under Min Spec: Windows Me/2000/XP. Under 'Recommended' it just said XP! Knowing that Game usually swap if you got a good reason, I bought it anyway - and it works on my 98se absolutely great! Fantastic graphics, frame rates and total stability. I can only assume they just couldn't bother checking it on a 98 PC. A great mistake, millions still use it.
  8. That's correct. I tried it and scandisk in w98se would not work. SO, not much use really...
  9. Tanks for the heads-up, MDGx. Good to see that nVidia are now doing the decent thing by us w98 users. Wish they would be as conscientious about their nForce chipset drivers.
  10. They would acknowledge your appreciation, only they're just too busy...
  11. All I can say, Wolf, is that when I had this trouble it was caused by Video drivers or DX9. Run DXdiag, check video is shown as okay, check AGP, then update drivers and if all that fails consider re-downloading DX9c, in case it's a corrupted download. Good luck
  12. MDGx, do I understand you to say the Gate A20 BIOS option can lock memory? In 98SE? Please explain, I have always had this option ON and dont think it's caused problems, but then again...
  13. Me too! Really, the price of MS stuff at least here in UK is criminal. Thankfully, I now got my purchased W98SE going great again at last, thanks to the helpfull people here. I was on the verge of going XP (I have it on my laptops) but just couldnt bring myself to pay $125 for an oem which I then had to replace if I change the motherboard.
  14. azagahl, you da man again! Some great suggestions there. My fave is Windows Classic
  15. I'm with you, azagahl. But how do you use XP without activation - now that's the question. Well, I guess you must mean you use XP on somebody else's machine, at work or something?
  16. Me too, at the mo. I got XP Home on this Acer laptop and XP Pro on a COmpaq. Maybe you remember an OS called Win98SE - I still use that, on my desktop system, just for nostalgia
  17. Gape, MGDx, Tihiy and co seem to have really got MS's feathers ruffled - so much so, they are going to bring out a Lite version of XP just for users and companies with W98 (see home page). Would you buy it? I doubt that I would, unless it was priced at less that £15 ($30). Of course, it depends what they leave in and what they leave out. Watch out for the same trick they pulled on the old USSR countries, bringing out a special OS which only works on low-res, max 800x600.
  18. No, no, second thoughts - I can see some smarto calling UE Unofficial Experiment. No, we don't want that....
  19. Some great suggestions there! Must admit, whenever I see Win9x a little voice in the back of my brain trys to re-interpret the x. But, yeah, WIN9X, if you get used to it, is as good as any. Guess my fave so far has to be WinUE though. That is a cool name, I think.
  20. IMHO W98, updated with the unofficial SP and with the Revolution pack etc added is a superb operating system - I love it. The only thing wrong with W98 is the title - Win98. Microsoft pulled a smart one there, built in obsolescence. And, no matter what anybody does to it, that title is standing there, defying any attempt at modernisation - for mother's sake, this OS is from the last century! I like to tell people the 98 stands for 2098, but strangely they dont often fall for that. What would be great would be if all the modders and modernisers of w98 could reach a concensus on some generic name for upgraded w98 - just to kick the idea off, here's a few suggestions for starters, but I am sure others can come up with some much better ones, although of course, we only need one. WinClassic. WinPremium OSWinMax. WindowsSheen. WinLean. WinAZ. Come on, I'm sure someone has a better idea...
  21. WOW! I am absolutely bowled over! I had no idea you would be able to help me so much. Thanks a million, each of you. I only hope that I may one day be able to help others in some vaguely-similar way. All those transparent text (incredible there are so many) are just what I needed. Thanks for the MS link - I quote: "MaxBackupCopies= A value of 5 (default) saves the last 5 registry backups in the Windows\Sysbckup folder. This value can be between 0 and 99. NOTE: When you restore a registry backup using Registry Checker for MS- DOS, only the five earliest backups are displayed. " Isn't that a beaut! Absolutely MS to a tee! Sure, you can have as many back ups as you like, only MSDOS wont see them! I wonder they don't say we can have our desktop any colour we like as long as it's blue. Gotta luvem! MDGx, thanks so much, I will be getting down and dirty with that tomorrow, sounds good. SO glad I found this place, heretofore I felt like a lone voice in the wilderness, now suddenly I found this oasis in the desert. Cheers
  22. Cheers, thanks for that Jack. Now, anyone got any help with those 2 probs?
  23. 2 things I need to do, can any smart person help me out? This is trivial, but I wonder if it is possible to make the icon title backgrounds transparent, so they blend with the background pic? Also, seems to me Sysbackup provides, through DOS an equivalent to XPs Restore anyday, works for me anyway. Now, by editing Scanreg.ini. you can choose a larger number of backups (I want 30) and where they are stored. Trouble is, when you then try to restore to these, MSDOS has lost their new location, and only shows 5 anyway - and NOT the last 5 done, which is a little useless. SO, I am wondering where the register keeps this info. Any help appreciated. BTW, I am so glad to have at last found this forum, I do not feel so... er... lonely anymore. I was begining to think I was the last W98 user in the world!
  24. I intend to stick with W98SE because I am not prepared to be robbed of hundreds of dollars for a product which is not worth it. In the UK Microsoft has perfected the art of overcharging - even an oem version costs around $120. We all know how much this stuff costs to make, they give equal value software away every month on magazine jackets. Besides, since Gape's great work, I prefer 98 to XP - I have both Pro and Home versions of XP on laptops. My desktop stays slim and efficient with 98 Spec - AMD 2100 Nvidia 5900xt, 500mg, W98SE
