Vietfobster
ok i know this has been discussed over and over again a million times but i got nowhere else to gook i just got dsl and its dl speed is 384-1500 and its ul speed is 128.if i remember correctly, theres 1 kilobyte in every 8 kilobits. if i have at least 384kb, im supposed to have 48 kB minumim!! but so far, ive been dling random stuff at places like download.com and betanews.com to test it and ive been getting 20kB average!! and when someone was sending me something in IM program, it was the same speed!! my dl and ul speed is same?? grr!!i dled cablenut and chose the "DANNJR_DSL_1500.ccs" one. then restarted. but so far, its still the same speed when dling stuff off websites. however, in p2p (edonkey for example), its recording speeds up to 37kB!!what gives???? how do i correct this? or is it supposed to be like this?p.s. how do i know if my dsl is pppoe? horsecharles
find out what your correct mtu is for your isp(look it up here for pertinent/local insights for your area): http://www.dslreports.com/forums/all ) -- both too low or high slows you down. You can also determine it yourself: http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=156use Cablenut, but with update-- only use the CCS in Update Folderspeed up firefox: http://forevergeek.com/open_source/make_firefox_faster.phpfix some reg settings: http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=158 and additional XP SP2 new issues: http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=1497get Treewalk explanation: http://ntcanuck.com/faq.htm a better ppp client than windows' or your isp's: http://www.raspppoe.com/physical tweaks / fixes: http://www.homephonewiring.com/http://dslnuts.com/DSLwiring.shtmlhttp://www.dslreports.com/faq/bellsouth?r=870http://www.tweakxp.com/article140057.aspxkeep dsl modem & wiring far, far away from computer, radios / stereo / speakers, microwave, refrigerators, tv, wireless phones, bluetooth, remotes, dimmer lighting wall switch, halogen lamps

horsecharles
Thank you. I forgot one:DHCP (long hangs) Only DSL, not Cable.Stops hangs at startup and/or at times while surfing. The cause may be DHCP timeout. Windows will actively seek to find an IP address for the network adapter from an outside source before assigning it one of its own range of addresses at startup, and as well periodically attempts to detect it. In Network Properties highlight the network adapter bound to TCP/IP, click Properties - IP Address - select Specify an IP Address , enter 192.168.0.2 in first field & in Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0BTW a lot of that will soon be dated, w/ the coming upgrades of dsl; we'll need to worry less & less about appliances interfering with the signal-- the wiring will be different.... horsecharles
Meant to mention that maybe a lot of the previously-mentioned stuff has probably been mentioned here separately/individually at one time or another?????Don't mean to steal any Zeus' thunder nor proclaim the invention of fire

Vietfobster
ok my downloads speeds have increased. this is because i got dsl just last week and it says im supposed to leave modem on for 10 days straight to maximize connection. before, i had 384k downstream. and now, it increased to 1536k!!!! im getting around 150kB/s average!! to me, thats GREAT. oh yea sorry horsecharles i havent done wut u suggested yet. imma get to it when im not bizzy doing homework EDIT:Thank you. SHOULD I DO IT?
horsecharles
Yes, 1 instead of 2-- whatever you think the last number should be for you: didn't know your setup: if multiple computers, shared printer, router, modem, etc. That tweak(btw nothing to do with static ip) may not be needed..... windows every xx minutes depending on settings, may want to detect the adapter, assign ip address... if you're surfing, things stop while this process goes on: if your browser periodically freezes / hangs / loads real slowly.... then you'd know that tweak would help you. It's great you haven't applied any tweaks yet-- in the beginning your connection is monitored, then the settings adjusted so you get your appropriate speeds. If after that's set you apply tweaks, you may squeeze a liitle extra gain out. Whereas if you'd applied them before, it'd be for naught once they adjusted your line settings.Looks like you're doing great: 1.5 is what your level is? Vietfobster
yup 1.5 is the max that im supposed to get.about the other thing, i click on my lan and go to properties and it shows how long i been on, etc. theres another tab called "support". i click on "details" and then it has a "lease obtained" and "lease expires". the date for it changes/updates every 10 minutes. is that why dsl hangs or something? if i do wut u suggested, will the lease thing stop? see, im dumb at this stuff!!!! horsecharles
that must be for your adapter & not for your connection: I think so, try it....the setting would then change to every 3 days.......& i'm real dumb at this also-- out of curiosity I just tried connecting to my remote desktop w/ dsl, just to see those settings-- got 3 days for the adapter, @ 1 week for the connection....
