patch for all known viruses ?

Any body have idea to patch the os (win98x,xp,2k,2k3 etc) so no known virus can infect the system. specially for internet infected viruses.

Yes. Get an Anti-Virus like Norton Anti-Virus or McAfee...

Your idea should be in 2005 wish list. But as far as I know, there is no such a way to patch windows from all known viruses. Simply, due to two main reasons which are

1) This would suppose that viruses have a specific known name signature therefore a ban list would prevent execution hence infection.

2) A virus is still a normal program that has an ability to infect others.

But I believe, a day will come when we will see OSes with some features that would prevent most infections.

For now, Stick with your favorite anti-virus and keep searching & imaging how you can contribute/illuminate people thoughts in develeping better Protection solutions.

Think of it this way, the cost of an extra stick of RAM and A/V software (or even just the RAM if you go the freebie route for A/V) is far outweighed by the cost in time to reinstall after a virii infection, plus the cost of dialup (if that's what you're on) to download all the patches after you reinstall a year or so old OS....

add all that up and even a processor upgrade looks cheap!

factoring all that in is known as Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), this even applies to 'home' users

Patching against specific viruses will only bloat an OS. The way i see it the best defence against viruses is an AV with very specific low level behaviour blocking support.

These Simple steps will block most viruses/Trojans etc.

1. Keep OS Updated with latest patches. Install SP2 in WinXP.

2. Work in a restricted user account and use the Administrator account when needed. (This is most imp and will stop all keyloggers etc.)

3. Restrict the user account from making changes to registry, system files in group security policy.

4. Set the e-mail clients not to show images and excute scripts in mails. Dont click on e-mail attachments from ppl you dont know.

5. Do not visit shady warez/porn sites or download 'cool' stuff from P2P.

6. Put in a firewall, WinXP comes with one and is sufficient for all practical purposes.

All unknown are preventable using above methods and keeping AV signatures upto date

Using group policy you can prevent exe from running, and or change file assoc for script files to notepad. Proven effective everytime
