Hi Incroyable HULK,

the security Update Q816093 for the MS Java Virtual Machine is missing in the updates (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816093/EN-US/). Is this "by design" or simply forgotten?

Unfortunately Microsoft claims this update can only be downloaded through their download center if you are using Windows 2000 SP2 or SP3 and that the rest of their customers has to use their great Windowsupdate site. I don't want to know who comes up with such ideas...

Anyway I think the fix should still be included in the list even if no download location is specified.

However you can download an update to the latest version 5.00.3810 directly from the Microsoft server -> http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...2a04af2b34d.exe

If you run the downloaded file on a Windows 2000 SP4 computer you get an error message. But if you rename it from MSJavWU_8073687b82d41db93f4c2a04af2b34d.exe to msjavwu.exe it works. I guess that protection was developed by the same guys who removed the file from the download center.

Concerning "KB819639 -› Flaw In Windows Media Player May Allow Media Library Access" in the Windows 2000 SP4 list: A little remark like "If you didn't upgrade your WMP and still use 6.4 you don't need this fix" would be nice. Maybe it saves a few people some searching, like myself :)

1) Let me say it again (3rd time ;) )

My method to get the list of hotfixes is under simulation with a flat installation for the 3 OS. I go to Windows Update and get the list of update from there. If Microsoft themself are not giving an accurate update list, I wonder who can...

Anyway, the goal is always the same: get all the critical updates integrated into our unattended project. I think my method is the fastest and easy for me to maintain.

2) About Media Player, It would be too much trouble listing all the exceptions for IE6, Media Player and DirectX if you choose NOT to upgrade theses. It is up to you to do the searching and beside I don't think there is any issues when installing updates even when they are not needed...

@netquik, I added this one to the list

@everybody, if you want to submit some non-critical updates for Windows XP SP2, please do so in the same format I use (like Netquik does). It is much easier for me to maintain. Thanks!

@Incroyable HULK

1. Great job. I use the same method to check for updates prior to integrating or slipstreaming.

2. The download links for the following XP SP1 updates point to the XP Embedded version, not XP Pro:

KB840374 - Correct Link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en

KB832483 - Correct Link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en

KB828035 - Correct Link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en

KB824105 - Correct Link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en

KB823182 - Correct Link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en

-------------

With all due respect to RyanVM, NetQuik, et al., I think its a mistake to list updates not found via Windows Update in this thread. The less informed may be tempted to put these into production environments without proper testing. Another thread would be more appropriate.

In a fresh Win2000 installation with SP4 and IE6 SP1 running "jview.exe" gives me a working MS Java Virtual Machine version 5.00.3229, so it's not removed. I didn't try an installation from a slipstreamed SP4 CD though.

1. Also here: I installed Win2000 -> SP4 -> IE6 SP1 -> DirectX 9.0c, then went directly to Windowsupdate wich presented me 31(?) security fixes and among them also the one for the JVM. That's why i actually posted it in this thread :)

2. Ok, just a suggestion.

3. Thanks.

@gbmacman

Thanks! I will update the link soon... where the heck I got those links? :blink:

@rutger10000

As long as you have 31 critical updates my list should be accurate ... unless the one you are talking about has been re-released more recently?

@gbmacman

done! thanks again!

@Bilou_Gateux

I moved KB814078 and KB823353 to the (new) EXCEPTIONS section of Windows 2000 SP4 since it is the best way to avoid problems... after all the testing we have done ;)

@everyone

Have a wonderfull holiday time! :hello:

Hello

I have 2 updates for Windows XP Professional hotfix which i cannot find any recommand switches in the forum, I want to know which switch I use for those hotfix?

These 2 Hotfixes are:

1. KB832353: Windows Media Player (All Versions) for Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 (Conjuction with KB828026)

2. KB839643: Security Update for Windows XP: A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to cause DirectX, or applications using DirectX, to become unresponsive.

Thanks for answering my question :)
