erpdude8 Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 windows 98 boots up fast anyway but more speed is always goodBut sometimes more speed may come at the price of lost stability, soldier1st.Stability [less to no Windows crashes] is my very first priority on the PCs Iuse, then speed. If a 'speed boost' cause more problems for Windows, I don'tuse it.If you really want to improve performance of Windows, buy some memorychips & install them onto your computers. At least RAM chips are affordableand you can run software that requires big chunks of memory. Be sure tomatch the kind of memory chips your computers use before buying.
soldier1st Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 i have 512 pc3200 ddr 400(being used to it's full capacity)there are no problems or stabilty problems so i go for more speed,if problems arise i revert what i previously did,the comps i make now come with with w2k or xp,not 98 sei plan to upgrade to 1 GB someday
azagahl Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 I use 1 GB DDR 400 in Win 98 SE with 2.0b2 SP and it is very stable. I also use top 2 GB of my disk for swap partition.I recommend not using Creative products though, my Destructive Labs SB Live! Value needs to install in low 4 MB of memory which causes a lot of problems with Win 98 SE. I have to use EMMExclude=A000-FFFF and also I can't install huge ram disk or smartdrv cache without causing SB Live driver problems.BTW, I believe Win98 SE supports only up to 1.5 GB of physical RAM. However, you may be able to create a ram disk which uses up any physical memory you have beyond that, and then use the ram disk as your swap drive. I'm curious if anyone has tried this.
soldier1st Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 i have a creative soundblaster live 5.1 soundcard in another comp that runs xp/2000 n it works good,it did work good in 98 se
erpdude8 Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 Try downloading the very LATEST drivers of the SoundBlaster Live 5.1sounc card at their web site:http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/Sorry, azagahl. You can only create a RAM disk up to 32 megabytes. The ram disk driver (ramdrive.sys) allows creating ram drives no greaterthan 32 Mb.You can also try removing the SoundBlaster Live Sound card and place itinto another PCI expansion slot, which will use different system resourcesand may work better.By the way, soldier1st how big is your hard drive on your PCs?
Acheron Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 Here some cool stuff:http://cygutils.fruitbat.org/cmd-reactos/index.htmlcmd.exe for use with Windows 98. Has far more functionality than the command.com included with Windows 98.Free of course.
MDGx Posted January 5, 2005 Posted January 5, 2005 To erpdude8:Sorry, azagahl. You can only create a RAM disk up to 32 megabytes. The ram disk driver (ramdrive.sys) allows creating ram drives no greaterthan 32 Mb.That is only if using Microsoft RAMDRIVE.SYS, which is an obsoleted tool. But there is a better one, called XMSDSK [Extended Memory Disk],which can create a RAM disk up to 2 GB [limited of course, by your installed RAM amount ]:XMS/EMS RAMdisk v1.9i 16-bit DOS TSR improved Microsoft RAMDRIVE.SYSreplacement for MS-DOS 5/6/7/8 + Windows 3.1x/9x/ME [74 KB, freeware]:http://www.uwe-sieber.de/files/xmsdsk.zipXMS/EMS RAMdisk v1.9i with installer/uninstaller for Windows 9x/ME [114 KB,freeware]:ftp://planetbrown.einados.com/pub/ADMIN/ramdrive.exeLoads and resizes the RAM drive (up to 2 GB) from AUTOEXEC.BAT or nativeMS-DOS prompt. Does NOT shift drive letters. Includes two separate drivers:XMSDSK.EXE (loads in extended RAM: requires an upper/extended memory managerin CONFIG.SYS) and EMSDSK.EXE (loads in expanded RAM: requires EMM386.EXEwith the "RAM" switch or any other 3rd party expanded memory manager inCONFIG.SYS).Uses 688 Bytes of upper DOS RAM if loaded with LOADHIGH in AUTOEXEC.BAT (uppermemory manager required in CONFIG.SYS).See "BROWSER CACHE IN MEMORY" for more info:http://www.mdgx.com/newtip12.htm#CACHRAMHope this helps.
