The most informative windows based app that i have seen to determine hardware in my views is Sandra Professional 2004..

However nothing beats cracking the seal and reading whats on the mainboard

I believe there's DMI for that - Desktop Management Interfacing.

You can query it thru the OS, and the BIOS (if it supports) will return the values for what you want. This is if you want to do it unattended. The "attended" ways to find out MoBo version are many, as indeed mentioned above.

I haven't tried coding for it, so I don't know, but googling should help.

Most probably he means the PCB version of the mainboard. Its best to look for what is physically stamped on the PCB. Why spend for a software when its as easy as opening a lid and closing it again.

It may be hard to find, though, especially if you're doing it the first time. Tip: It will be either near where the keyboard connnector is soldered or between the PCI slots.
