re. ShowDriveLettersFirst

I've tried this on my XP2 PC but it doesn't change the order of the display for me. I googled and came up with a recent MS Hotfix KB 330193

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330193
Key: ShowDriveLettersFirst
Type: DWORD
Value: 1,2, or 4
If the value is 1, the drive letter is displayed first for remote drives.
If the value is 2, drive letters are not displayed.
If the value is 4, the drive letter is displayed first for all drives.
This registry entry can be applied in a Per-Machine policy or in a Per-User policy, by using one of the following subkeys:
• For a Per-Machine policy, click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer
• For a Per-User policy, click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer
If the Per-Machine registry key exists, it takes precedence over the Per-User setting. For the changes to take effect, the current user must log off from the computer and then log on to the computer.

Anyway I'm posting this to further a discussion on it FWIW. Perhaps I need to set the policy also?

Me, I'll keep tweaking 'til it (doesn't) hurt.

i remember something similar, i used to add my nickname near the clock with a simple regtweak but i'm not sure about the date...

Yeah, there must be a way, cause on another site, I saw:

Displaying date on desktop

You can right click on the tool bar, then unlock it. Then you can drag the

top of the tool bar up. The day and date will then be displayed, as well as

the time.

I tried it and yes, it does work.... This being the case, its only a matter of displaying just the "DD" and when the Taskbar is standard and not doubled.

Sure hope someone can help!

Cheers

ok found the key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\International]
"sLongDate"="dddd, dd' de 'MMMM' de 'yyyy"
"sShortDate"="dd/MM/yyyy"
"sTimeFormat"="H:mm:ss"

what i did time ago is to change the value to "H:mm:ss[siMoNsAyS]" and worked but don't know if you can use for example "H:mm:ss[dd/MM/yyyy]". hope it helps

:( Didn't help!

I tried dd/MM - H:mm:ss and got some funny dd/24 - 9:24Am and then I realized that "M" is used for both Minute and Month!

So, because of the clash, its either not possible or there should be a way of putting

"sShortDate - H:mm:ss" .... Incidentally, I tried that and it did not work!

Cheers

In the current version of the file, square brackets are missing around the 'Remove "Shotcut to" in new shorcuts' tip's regkey. Should, of course, be:

;-----

;-----
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]

Thanks for the hard work, everyone.. your efforts are incredible!

Here are a bunch of other options I typically use that did not appear in the current file. Note that some may be redundant, but I tried to avoid it. Apologies if others have already state these, i'm in a bit of a rush to read through the whole thread. I attempted to document these, but have little time to do so. A few are rather difficult to find and confirm, such as closing TCP/IP ports that might be security risks (for those w/o firewalls and no desire to tinker with TCP/IP filtering in windows, or its firewall). Others are for people with simliar personal taste to mine. I hope they all still have meaning, I have not tested a couple since Windows 98 :blushing: Thanks again to everyone who contributed to this list.

@Jogy: If you meant having the actual "Open With.." option appear on each file, instead of just those that Windows normally chooses, then this is the registry tweak I found on other MSFN forum somewhere:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\openas]

Also, be sure to put this in as well so that it doesn't appear twice for files that normally have it already:

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Unknown\shell]
