I am a registered user of McAfee VirusScan 8. The problem is, my dad got it way ago yesteryear. Now whenever I install it again (that's every 7-8 weeks, we have power failures/load-shedding everyday), a need rises to update it. Now the installer has come with virus definitions upto 23rd Aug 2003. Now updating it takes a painful 2-4 hours.

It is build no. 8.0.17

Current is build no. 8.0.41

Can anybody tell me how to get a newer installer for it. McAfee do not have such an option on their site.

There must be some way to integrate the latest .DAT update. See the installer files and post an output of a "dir /B" of the installer folder here, please?

No, it is a single file named vsh80en.exe. Typing vsh80en /? on the prompt only starts the installer (shows no parameter info).

Also, it is not only the .DAT updates. It is the engine updates & .DLLs as well that I want to update. And, the engine update takes more time. The .DAT update completes in 20 min. approx.

i personally dislike mcafee but i remember have read something about how to update...

from PeBuilder site

Download the latest superdat (sdatxxxx.exe) file from the Network Associates ftp site.

Copy the file sdatxxxx.exe into the files folder located in the mcafee plugin directory (plugin\mcafee\files).

Now you must unpack it using the "/e" parameter. From the mcafee folder, run sdatxxxx.exe /e (where xxxx is the version number, for example sdat4290.exe). When unpacking you don't see anything happen for about 20 seconds, just wait for it.

i doubt if it can help...

personally, I like updating mcafee virusscan manually. download the latest DAT file here:
ftp://ftp.nai.com/pub/antivirus/datfiles/4.x/
get the dat-xxxx.zip file, open it in Winzip, extract the CLEAN.DAT, NAMES.DAT & SCAN.DAT files onto the VirusScan folder where those 3 DAT files are stored and overwrite the old DAT files with the newest ones. be sure to shut down ALL VirusScan and VShield apps before manually updating those three DAT files.

the /A switch for vsh80en.exe doesnt work. it peforms regular install as if the /A switch was not used. both vsh80en.exe and vsp80en.exe use different setup programs than with older versions of VirusScan; I know for a fact that VirusScan home/pro editions 7.03, 6.02 and the 5.x editions use Windows Installer to setup the VirusScan app. I believe the /A switch only works with Windows Installer based setups. VirusScan home/pro edition 8.x does NOT use Windows Installer to install it. Edited by erpdude8
