I know there were many trimmed versions of XP even more famous than UE 6.

Technically, I do not advocate for any of them!  Which is also why I never heard of UE 6.

I advocate for the tools BEHIND these trimmed versions and for the end-user to use those tools!

Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.  Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.

I have zero "like" for X-Lite.  Zero trust mainly because one of the X-Lite variations PUNCHED ME IN THE FACE with an expired license for ADDED software that shouldn't be there in the first place.  As if somehow the only REASON for the EXISTENCE of X-Lite was to SOLICIT for folks to PURCHASE a renewed license!  And then it evolved into providing HACKED LICENSES instead, or so it appeared.  And I'll shout that from every rooftop I can find.

I hear you. I've realized sometimes we have bad experiences and become sensitive. It's happened to me many times throughout my life. But every now and then I try again, and I've seen that there are ppl who have also learned to correct past mistakes. That's why I'm always trying new things, although I don't abandon what works.

I love computers and software but I fish in a different way. So even though I love being here, I do other things and couldn't dedicate much time to learn how to strip down operating systems. Started with UE6 in early 2000s and never had any problems with these stripped-down versions. Of course, here in Argentina and Latin America in general laws are a joke.

Here many times you can't even afford to eat to be able to pay the rent and most people die without ever being able to buy a house. So nobody will say anything to you about a freakin license. That's why these cut-down versions are born in the most appalling places of the planet. No choice but to improvise things to try to keep up, especially with technology.  :cheerleader:

Tried downloading several links from different sites and couldn't get anything to download.

This will not stand, man. :)

Hmm, it's really strange that FDM downloading doesn't work for you and it works for NHTPG.
If we rule out that the download problem is NOT something in the program Settings itself, then I wonder if there is some way to troubleshoot and find out why FDM downloading doesn't work on your system.
I also noticed NHTPG has xp-AntiSpy installed for this test, not sure if that changes something or is just for extra security.

It gets installed on all of my XP systems/VMs before they are ever allowed internet access.

I do not, under ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, allow access to "Windows Updates".  Never have!  Never will!

And xp-AntiSpy is the "easiest" route to achieve that on new installs.

It seems FDM can't reach the web. As I said, have it's exception in the firewall and I've been testing EagleGet and now Internet Download Accelerator, they connect without a problem. I know that they removed a lot of things from this version of XP and sometimes that causes some bugs but in the past FDM worked perfectly. That's the strangest thing.

A few months ago had to apply a security patch to be able to use a wall-breaking WiFi antenna to have WPA2 security protocol working which is not native to XP SP2. Maybe it's something related to that?

Didn't know xp-AntiSpy. In UE 6 -and most trimmed versions- Windows Updates are completely disabled by default. I'll take a look at it. Nothing more beautiful than discovering essential software from that era.  :D

I've been testing xp-AntiSpy. It's a tool for disabling unnecessary, intrusive, and annoying Microsoft features. In most unbloated versions these are disabled by default and if any persist this type of tool is used. I don't think it has anything to do with the FDM connection problem.

We were chatting about XP and the WPA2 issue here when asked for help getting the antenna working on my XP SP2 aka UE6.

what you are using as a firewall, but I do not use software firewalls (I block at the hardware level instead).

It's called Sphinx Windows Firewall Control Free 7.5.100.200. One of the lightest ones that still work on XP. Think someone here on the forum recommended it. Works well. It does the job.

I liked the idea of blocking at hardware level. Looked for information and found it as web filtering? If you could summarize it a bit I might try. Can't promise I'll implement it thou.

At the risk of sounding like what comedians here in the US refer to as "Captain Obvious", your FDM will work if you *disable/UNINSTALL* Sphinx.

To coin another phrase, "Whoala!  Problem Solved!"  :cheerleader:

Think it takes up 200mb freshly installed.

<OT>  I call "BS"  :buehehe:

This is UE7 *WITHOUT* any of the *ADDED* software (two cannot be disabled, I did enable XPize Lite).

There's no way you have 200 MB on UE6 when UE7 *without* any of the *added* software takes 2.85 GB.

For reference, my own tweaked XP (teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime) only takes 504 MB.

I call it "BM"... bad memory!  :buehehe:

It's been a long time! You're right again NHTPG, a freshly installed UE6 takes around 1.3gb. Sorry for the mistakes. It wasn't intentional.

Here's another one: just realized I said something wrong a few posts back. The version FDM's official site recommends for XP is 3.9.7. That's the one I can't install or run portable. The one we3fan recommended is 3.9.4; now understand why I was able to install it.

That sounds more inline with expectations.  I couldn't find an English version to truly explore.

My Spanish is limited to "La chica es mui bonita".

Comes in handy when Spanish-speaking are talking about people within earshot and they think we cannot understand them, so you point to the "ring leaders" wife/girlfriend and proclaim loud enough for the whole group to hear, "La chica es mui bonita".  They will talk in ENGLISH for the remainder of the night!  TRUE STORY!

I only tested we3fan's 3.9.4.

I have archived downloads of FDM but it was just faster to download the 3.9.4 linked during the discussion.

Actually I think it takes 1gb or maybe 1.2... so let's say 1.3gb since I have no way to prove it right now. What I can confirm is that my UE6 fully loaded takes up 3gb.
