user57 Posted September 22, 2024 Posted September 22, 2024 (edited) on your installation you didnt set a administrator pw ? if empty you can just click ok there are programs and methods to remove that administrator password - maybe someone point it out some of those, its been a while for me since i do this - i never had problems with this as im always logged in as admistrator maybe: ? https://www.partitionwizard.com/clone-disk/windows-xp-password-reset.html Edited September 22, 2024 by user57
Dušan Vićić Posted September 22, 2024 Author Posted September 22, 2024 (edited) Nope, tried that and it doesn't work... In my opinion, it has to do to some hidden Group Policy setting that wasn't properly set up while XP was installing, I'm sure of it. Edited September 22, 2024 by Dušan Vićić
Dušan Vićić Posted September 22, 2024 Author Posted September 22, 2024 (edited) I've just realized that I've probably found the problem.... On Visual C++ 2010 it says: The Temp folder is on a drive that is full or is inaccessible. Free up space on the drive of verify that <b> you have write permission on the TEMP folder </b>. So, i started looking up around %temp% folder. It's read-only. Plus, i think i've found another problem. When you have to enable Security options on the folder, you must go to Folder options and uncheck Use simple file sharing (Recommended). Now the tricky part is that on any folder on the second and third partition of the HDD it shows the Security tab when i click Properties. BUT NOT ON THE C:\ FOLDER! Including the %TEMP% folder. Any ideas? Edited September 22, 2024 by Dušan Vićić
Dave-H Posted September 22, 2024 Posted September 22, 2024 Is the C: drive NTFS formatted? If it's FAT32, that's the reason. The security tab only appears on NTFS drives. 1

If i change C from FAT32 to NTFS would that work? Edited September 22, 2024 by Dušan Vićić 1
Dave-H Posted September 22, 2024 Posted September 22, 2024 Should do, yes. I have drives on my multi-boot system which I keep on FAT32 for compatibility with Windows 98!

Then i checked ownership, and as I've thought, it was set not to my username, DusanVicic, but to Administrators (it is hidden, accessible only though Safe Mode i think). I transferred ownership from Administrators to DusanVicic, and with 4 or 5 folder restriction errors, everything was changed to my user. I tried to run Visual C++ 2010, and... nope. I still have that error... The only problem remaining is the read only attribute. When i tried to uncheck it, it's only showing that it is unchecked until i close the properties, the next time i open it, it comes back as checked. How to make it permanent? Dave-H Posted September 24, 2024 Posted September 24, 2024 FWIW my Windows temporary folder is also marked as read only, so I don't think that's your problem. If your temporary folder really was unwritable you'd be having a lot more issues, as many programs need to write to it all the time, including Windows itself.
user57 Posted September 24, 2024 Posted September 24, 2024 i think neither where that leads to, he should try to be the administrator and see if that happens there
modnar Posted September 26, 2024 Posted September 26, 2024 Instead of using plain XP_SP3 you could install XP_SP3 and then Harkaz' fine Unofficial Service pack 4 - it contains .NET things, but there is a procedure to follow. VisualC redist you can use from Abbodi from mydigitallife. Maybe such a system would be more workable...

Yeah I think I'm sure that it is my Windows installation being corrupted in the Users and Security properties. Something is horribly wrong on system32 even though it installed all updates, have installed Avast AV and DirectX9... Currently on very short hiatus because of college starting in my country, but i think on the weekends i will try sfc /scannow command on cmd, and see whether my predictions were true...
user57 Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 to be honest i do not know all the user/system settings that are possible however the restriction that the other "users" cant do anything was a common want there used to be like a father giving his son his PC, making him a such "user" account - restricted , not followed to see everything , not allowed to install everything also on the most installers you can select "for all users(aka system)" or just "this user"
