Welcome to MSFN Licht92. Since no other Win7 users have reported that issue, did you install an antivirus last month? That would usually turn off Defender, and you only get automatic definition updates when it is turned on. Still, M$ did block antispyware definition updates for Vista in 2019, so they may have done the same to Win7 now. In that case, you could manually download and install definitions from this M$ page: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/defenderupdates

When they retired all Windows-signed SHA-1 content last year, nothing actually changed in Windows 7 SP1 against their own claim. Them now claiming "We expect the SHA-1 certificate expiration to be uneventful" I guess means less than nothing will change.

Current status report (09/2020)

Downloaded fresh 32-bit (x86) Win 7 Pro ISO with SP1 bundled in.

First I try to browse some websites in Google Chrome and got a lot of certificate issues, so I downloaded root certificate update first, here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/support-for-urgent-trusted-root-updates-for-windows-root-certificate-program-in-windows-a4ac4d6c-7c62-3b6e-dfd2-377982bf3ea5

Even after this: Automatic updates say error: 80072EFE

I'll just state my experience: Windows Update does not work without KB3138612, KB4474419, KB4490628.

ofc it wont work with sha2 updates, sha1 entry points are disabled since 2021.... or even 2020

windows update should still work all you need is the sha-2 update and whatever the other needed update is and it should work again (theres also legacy update fix for if the update fix wont work)

Given I put in a new NVME in my Windows 7 box, I can confirm after running Simplex update and then launching Windows Update, yes it still works. (as of 23 August 2025).
