Hi guys (and gals), I am new here and really need some help please. I am NOT a pro at this stuff, so dumb it down where you can please.

With Microsoft dumping support for Windows XP soon, I have been trying to create a fully updated XP Pro x86 install CD. I am pretty close I think, but I need some help to get through the final hurdles.

I have been using nLite 1.4.9.3 and various addons as required. I started with a good clean Win XP Pro x86 English CD (I am in the USA). I have followed various tutorials and I am confident I have been able to integrate all the updates (including WMP11 and IE8) with the following exceptions;

.NET Framework 1.1

.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 KB951847

.NET Framework 4 Client Profile KB982670

Or so Windows update shows when I check for updates after doing a clean install from my created CD. Oh yeah, it also shows the Malicious Software Removal tool, but that really is not an update, so I am ignoring that one.

I have checked all over the place (including here) and it seems to be a mixed bag of information. Some people say you can't integrate the .NET Framework stuff and some people say you can. There are various tutorials telling how to include them in various ways, but most of which were not step by steps and I was unable to follow them. Microsoft is going to be dumping XP soon, so I need to get this figured out (I intend to keep using XP because it does what I need and I like it).

Without making the CD an unattended install (I prefer a normal install), can those 3 updates/patches, and any new updates/patches they may open up, be incorporated? If so, what files do I need, where do I get them, and how do I do it please.

Thank you in advance for your help...

Check http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/ for .NET Framework add-ons.

Word of caution: The one I tried, .NET 2.0, installed correctly but would not let you apply any future updates. They would fail on installation so I had to clean my system of all traces of .NET and install normally.

Not sure this is really an issue since XP goes EOL next month but .NET security updates for other system may still work on XP after that.

It could be a different thread there, but I think I looked there previously. Part of what I saw there I didn't understand what I was supposed to do, and secondarily, it did not sound like anyone was confident that it worked well. Opinion?

Is there a way to have these three NET updates installed during XP install (like the runonce) without making the install an unattended install? Also, if there is, will it make any difference that the NET Framework 4 Client Profile update needs/needed to be installed all by itself (according to windows update)?

To be honest, I was disappointed that with all the experts on here, nobody would offer any real help, so I just blew off this thread and went my merry way. But, since someone else asked, I won't just ignore them like I was, I will provide what I was able to learn, THE HARD WAY... (lucky I just happen to check back here on this thread)

#1, using the link -X- I searched there for days and tried most of what I found there. The results, many of their add-ons don't work, and the ones that do have a ton of other add-ons included (non M$ add-ons). A number of people there had asked for add-ons that only included official clean patches, but they were always met with snide comments, ignored, or told to do it themselves. So much for that place being of any real help to anyone.

#2, I searched Bing and Google for days and days, looking up everything I could find and testing things. Sure **** good thing I had the time and a machine to test on huh? I hit what felt like a zillion dead ends, people saying it can't be done, etc etc etc, a list of useless information too long to list here. In other words, it wasn't a total waste, I learned a zillion ways on how NOT to do it, and that in itself can be useful.

#3, By sheer luck and refusal to give up, I found the answer. I have tried it and it works flawless.... Every time.... I am posting it here so that maybe it might save someone else some time, even though nobody seemed to want to help me... Who knows, maybe I just caught all the "experts" at the wrong time...

The answer is here ----> http://www.wincert.net/forum/topic/7696-addon-net-framework-11-20-30-35-gdrqfe-true-addons/

That will provide everything you need for all the .NET frameworks except 4. I no longer have the link (or I would give it), but 4 was also available at the same place from the same person, just in a different thread. I am sure it would not be too hard to locate.

In any case, I now have a clean CD that has all the official patches from M$ for Win XP Pro (x86), and nothing else. When I use it to install, I can go to Windows update and it shows with NO updates needed, except the newest malicious software removal tool and a couple optional items I chose to leave out (The search assist thing, I forget what it is called). And, it passes all the test programs out there that are supposed to check your .NET framework. THEY WORK! Perfect for me.

ROFL. THEY HAVE THE EXACT SAME THING AT THE LINK I GAVE YOU!!!

nonno fabio and Onepiece (the creators of the .NET add-ons) are also at the link I gave you. Probably more so.

And to finish supplying the info:

... all the .NET frameworks except 4. I no longer have the link (or I would give it), but 4 was also available at the same place from the same person, just in a different thread. I am sure it would not be too hard to locate. ...

Here is the .NET 4 link you were probably referring to at WinCert - http://www.wincert.net/forum/topic/7697-addon-net-40-framework-true-addon/ - and the corresponding one at RyanVM - http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.php?=8317. [ NOTE: You will likely need to be a member at RyanVM to get to some of the subforums, but don't worry, it's free and many members here are members there, and at WinCert, so you will see lots of familiar names.]

For the record, AFAIK, all of the various releases by OnePiece (nonno fabio) are posted at both WinCert and RyanVM. RyanVM is often given as a reference from here because it sometimes actually has more info, (even though it probably has fewer overall posts than WinCert), which as you discovered sometimes makes it harder to find what you want, but then it also then gives you more options. Not everyone wants an addon but would rather have an installer they can use on a running system, for example.

Sorry you had a bad experience and were disappointed. And thanks for coming back to tell where you found what you needed. Not in your case, but often folks will ask the same questions that have been asked over and over and over, so yes, they sometimes get short "Google it" kind of answers, but if they will then come back and say what they searched for, what they found vs what they wanted, and ask politely as you have done, then they will almost always get a better response. Also, if they don't come back, then we don't always realize they didn't get the info they needed.

By the way, I'm also an EE, Ga Tech '79, and am the same age as Bill Gates, so I can identify with you.

Cheers and Regards

Hi there,

Some of the information in this topic were very useful but still two .net framkework related updates still appeared:

.High Priority: Update for Windows XP (KB961118)

.Software, Optional: Windows PowerShell 2.0 and WinRM 2.0 for Windows XP and Windows Embedded (KB968930)

easy to fix... but besides the Windows Malicious Software Tool - April 2004, which from what i understand, it's not possible to add to the Windows CD, for some reason i can't also add the Cumulative Support Update For Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP (KB2936068). Has this happened to anyone else? I've already checked on the site and I download the right one ( http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=42436 ), and if i install the file and refresh windows update site, it works, so i don't know why it isn't added by nLite.

I would appreciate if any of you guys can help me out here.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

KB2936068 works flawlessly for me. I've ran about six full runs in a virtual machine in the last 24 hours

You can add the MSRT as a full add-on but you the name can't contain 890830. nLite has that hard coded and will reject it. I just rename the last 0 to an O.

I'm putting together an MSRT add-on that just places a shortcut to download the latest MSRT. It's more logical than a full add-on since the MSRT changes at least once a month and takes a large amount of space on the CD.

Thanks a lot for your help and quick reply -X-.

But your saying that MSRT will continue to have updates for WinXp? I thought that it would also end after April the 8th, Microsoft made such a big fuss about ending the support, I'm not even going to install MSE anymore, cause from what I red in articles, they will still update it for about another year or so, but i can't handle those annoying red pop-ups anymore.

P.S.: Another weird thing i came across was that Windows Update considers the November 2013 update for Root Certificates more up to date than the March 2014 one. I even tried to install the March 2014 after, but when i refreshed Windows Update, the November one appeared again. did this also happened to you?

Yeah, the MSRT will be available to XP users until July 2015. Not 101% sure it's July but my memory says so.

I never install the Certificate updates so can't help you there. I only install high priority updates.
