Hello all and I know this problem has been covered before on the list, but am going to try and get it solved one more time. Computer I am working on is Pentium III 450 mhz with 256 meg of RAM, 40 gig hdd, and promise card for hdd. Just did clean install of Windows XP Home, upgrade edition. fdisked MBR, then fdisked. Installed XP. Installation went great, but when I go to shut down system, goes thru shutdown routine and then sits at Window that says "It is now safe to shut down computer". :cry Have to physically turn off button to shut off computer. Where do you suggest I go within Windows itself, or BIOS to fix this problem? Computer always shut down by itself before with Windows ME, and Windows 98. Any help is much appreciated!

welcome to the forums linda, this is an oldie and easily fixed too :)

go to start > control panel > Performance and maintenance > power options. then click on the tabs at the top of that box, theres only two tabs i think, look for a tickbox that says "enable APM" and tick it then click "apply" or "OK"

it should reboot now no problems

this might also help

Hi Sorry, I guess I should have put a good deal more in the post:rolleyes: my error! <sigh> already tried the apm enable and all that does is cause the computer to shut down and then automatically re-boot. Very frustrating! I can find no where in the BIOS to do the ACPI thing either.

Thanks for replying.

Bah, ok, well i have got lost :yeahyeah Sry guys for bothering you with this:

I have the problem rebooting my comp. I go to the normal procedures, start -> Turn Off Comp -> Restart. It then just hangs which this is annoying because i play a game at tournament level and need to reboot to clear my net stuff that my DSL collects (packets) so i need it to be quick but i have to wait then it still hangs so i have to press the physical reboot button on my tower. Very annoying. If you could tell me how to fix this i would be very much appreciated :) Ty.
