Hi,

I was using Comodo Firewall on Windows XP. It does not seem to be working properly with Win 7. MSE, though includes Defender and MSRT, does not have a Firewall.

Can anyone suggest a good Firewall for Windows 7?

I've installed Comodo on a friends PC using compatibility mode, and it installed and is running just fine on Windows 7 RTM.

Using the built in firewall have worked very well for me, runs well and easy to manage

You are SO right,I use only the W7 built-in firewall and never have any problems on the net!

Yes, combining it with Microsoft Security Essential is also great too :-)

But you'd better back that up with a competent Anti-Virus program, with Anti-Trojan and Anti-Spyware.

No one program will ever give you 100% protection. It's always advisable to use a package of good programs to be really safe.

Your proposal is furthermore the only possible option if you install SP1. It has left "out of service" all traditional firewalls.

The basic Windows firewall is fine to start with. I use it but not the Advanced Security option. I also have a hardware firewall as well. For what I do at home, I don't really need anything more than that.

I use windows 7 firewall control + its shortcut put in startup folder

makes much easier to "use" win7 FW

the only downfall, it doesn't allow blocking of system processes and some other that MS tagged as safe

That, Outpost and Comodo are the only legitimate choices really (perhaps Kaspersky and Norton, too). For me the important thing isn't the application (process) filtering, like someone mentioned, but a proper rule-based firewall like Kerio 2.1.5 used to be (program, process / protocol / ip address / port - in one simple prompt, intelligently designed, a concept that few companies seemingly understand?)

Outpost was somewhat buggy when tested on Win7 x64 Pro & Ultimate & the problem with Comodo is that it lists Windows System Applications and Windows Updater Applications as trusted, when those are some of the more important things to filter (as the window$ system itself is targeted and attacked).

Sunbelt Personall Firewall took over the development of Kerio 2.1.5 (& Tiny Personal Firewall), both of which evolved into some other (unneeded, corporate?.. & utterly useless) products, but its development stopped @ Vista and it really never got out of the beta stage unfortunately.

ps.

It's been many years, decades, that noone can build the software firewall we all need (save a few exceptions, here and there, some mentioned above). Hard for me to grasp this, even now.

If you are running Windows 7 without SP1 you are able to filter any system default apps by using the freeware "Pc Tools Firewall Plus".
