triger49
Is this what you are looking for?http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb896646.aspxThat's the idea...really don't need to log activity....use the last freware version of Comparator to Log changes....have a couple 700 meg+ databases stored on a pair of 80gig drives ....sometimes searches can leave you with the illusion that nothing is happening.....would be nice to know things are busy at a glance....ThanksJake

submix8c
Interesting...FWIW, I did a Google on"hard-disk-activity software-tool"(less the quotes) and got a couple of hits - some "pay-me" and some "free".Lots of "garbage/not what I want" hits too... GrofLuigi
Thanks to submix8c I found an interesting tool and comparison. Haven't tried anything yet.[ravings of an oldtimer]In the time of Amiga, there were many more tools of this kind... And all of them free... Sysdll
I’m a fool for downloading free utilities. I have DriveGLEAM running on XP and it seems to be OK so far. None of the utilities in the link Groft.uigi provided are listed as being for Windows 9X. I can’t test any because my Windows Me computer needs a fresh install right now (I trashed it again by downloading too many free utilities). If anyone gets them working in 9X please let me know. And thanks Triger49 for suggesting this. The pci HD cards I’ve used either do not have a way to display HD activity or if they do it’s just a flicker and not indicative of real HD activity. triger49
...... I can’t test any because my Windows Me computer needs a fresh install right now (I trashed it again by downloading too many free utilities). That's one that's avoidable....do yourself a favor and grab the last freeware version of Total uninstall and everytime you think about not using it, remember all the countless hours it takes to reload a system. In Fact, I now go to the other extreme and when I get things fine tuned just the way I want them, I fire up Western Digital Lifeguard util and make a bootable mirror of my drive C to another hard drive....Jake
jaclaz
It seems like a similar thingy for the Win9x/Me family is VERY diffcult to find. I was able to find a few, but all for the NT/2K/XP family.BUT B) :Here are a couple for "pure DOS":http://cd.textfiles.com/maxx/tothemaxsw/DISK/FILES.BBSDRVELD10.ZIP On-screen drive LEDhttp://cd.textfiles.com/maxx/tothemaxsw/DISK/http://cd.textfiles.com/maxx/tothemaxsw/DISK/DRVELD10.ZIPhttp://cd.textfiles.com/drsharewaregold/utility1/files.bbsKDL.ZIP TSR BLINKS NUMLOCK LIGHT AT DISK ACCESShttp://cd.textfiles.com/drsharewaregold/utility1/http://cd.textfiles.com/drsharewaregold/utility1/kdl.zipAnd here is a Win95 one , cannot say whether it would work on 98/Me :http://cd.textfiles.com/mediadepot/MENU/DIRLISTS/DIR41.hdled.zip 545758 13-09-96 Hard Disk LED simulates a hard disk light | that flashes every time there's a disk | activity. Hard Disk LED appears on the | Windows 95 task bar and flashes every time | the system accesses physical, direct access | devices (ie. your hard drives).http://cd.textfiles.com/mediadepot/FILES/41/?N=Dhttp://cd.textfiles.com/mediadepot/FILES/41/HDLED.ZIPUnfortunately Shareware, will disactivate after 30 minutes....A more recent version is here :http://hdled.home.comcast.net/~hdled/reported as working for both 98 and Me, but the e-mail at attbi.com should mean that the thingy is "on it's own". jaclaz Edited March 15, 2009 by jaclaz
Monroe
... did some quick research on Total Uninstall that was mentioned in a few earlier posts. Sounded like something I could use for installing/uninstalling programs. The newer version 5.2.0 is much larger in size and not free. The last freeware version is only 685 k and works with Win9x/NT/ME/2000/XP ... or so it is listed. I need it to work with Win 98SE.This page goes into detail about the free version:http://freewarewiki.com/TotalUninstall 1. freeware version link: http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/pa...tal%20Uninstall 2. freeware version link: http://www.aplusfreeware.com/categories/util/uninst.html ... haven't had a chance to install and try it out yet ... been looking (years) for a simple free program that would keep track of software being installed and then remove it, if I didn't want to use it. ... well, the program installed OK with Win 98SE ... have nothing else to install so I can't really check it out in that department. ... however, much to my amazement, I already had this program (last free version) stored on a CD. When I downloaded it and why I never used it ... have no answer. ... completely missed it.... Edited March 15, 2009 by duffy98
