west117wolf
To everybody: Thanks for helping. I do not know what I did, but the hated icon is gone and it appears that the install occurred. From what I can remember I did the following:1. I disabled auto updates.2. Next I changed from auto update option 2 to option 1.3. Next I got a download for netframework 2.0 which I downloaded4. Next i got the hated auto start update and downloaded using the auto update program.5. Next my computer would not shut down so I had to turn off via the computer off switch.6. When I restarted, the hated program was gone. That is about all I can remember, but I don't give a rat's behind...problem gone. Thanks to all of you for helpingWestley
west117wolf
Iceman: The icon is back and still uninstalled. Whatever I did it was not right and I was having lock problems so I ran system restore to3/2. Then I ran dial-a-fix as you recommended. The icon came back again. Then I again tried a manuel install, but no luck still not recognized as installed. omegaOmega
Hello, James_A (or others),Re: "It is possible to delete/reset the local database and folders used by Automatic Updates, but first you should try installing the update manually."Can you provide some additional guidance about how to do this? I'm thinking it might be worth a try.Cheers,Randy
IcemanND
You could try Dial-a-Fix to reset the Automatic Updates service. If you don't want to let the tool do it it also shows you all the steps it will take and you can do them manually instead. cluberti
I would say Windows Update on that machine is indeed having issues - there are lots of things that look like they would track back to COM permissions issues - in general, when update.exe starts failing with the error code 0xf201, this is usually COM permissions at the root cause:1. Open regedit, and export the key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\OLE2. Inside the OLE registry key, delete any of the following values if they exist (these may, or may not, exist):DefaultAccessPermissionLegacyImpersonationLevelLegacyAuthenticationLevel3. Reboot

omegaOmega
Hello, Cluberti et al,I can sympathize with Westley's reluctance to play with his registry, but I'm not shy about monkeying with my own. (I make occasional images of my system disk in case of accident. :-) )But I don't seem to have any of the values that you mentioned. What I do have in that key are the following values (and sub-keys):[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole]"DefaultLaunchPermission"=hex:01,00,04,80,5c,00,00,00,6c,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ 14,00,00,00,02,00,48,00,03,00,00,00,00,00,18,00,1f,00,00,00,01,02,00,00,00,\ 00,00,05,20,00,00,00,20,02,00,00,00,00,14,00,0b,00,00,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,\ 00,05,04,00,00,00,00,00,14,00,0b,00,00,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,05,12,00,00,\ 00,01,02,00,00,00,00,00,05,20,00,00,00,20,02,00,00,01,02,00,00,00,00,00,05,\ 20,00,00,00,20,02,00,00"MachineLaunchRestriction"=hex:01,00,04,80,48,00,00,00,58,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ 14,00,00,00,02,00,34,00,02,00,00,00,00,00,18,00,1f,00,00,00,01,02,00,00,00,\ 00,00,05,20,00,00,00,20,02,00,00,00,00,14,00,0b,00,00,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,\ 00,01,00,00,00,00,01,02,00,00,00,00,00,05,20,00,00,00,20,02,00,00,01,02,00,\ 00,00,00,00,05,20,00,00,00,20,02,00,00"MachineAccessRestriction"=hex:01,00,04,80,44,00,00,00,54,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ 14,00,00,00,02,00,30,00,02,00,00,00,00,00,14,00,03,00,00,00,01,01,00,00,00,\ 00,00,05,07,00,00,00,00,00,14,00,07,00,00,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,00,\ 00,00,01,02,00,00,00,00,00,05,20,00,00,00,20,02,00,00,01,02,00,00,00,00,00,\ 05,20,00,00,00,20,02,00,00"EnableDCOM"="Y"[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole\AppCompat][HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole\AppCompat\ActivationSecurityCheckExemptionList]"{A50398B8-9075-4FBF-A7A1-456BF21937AD}"="1""{AD65A69D-3831-40D7-9629-9B0B50A93843}"="1""{0040D221-54A1-11D1-9DE0-006097042D69}"="1""{2A6D72F1-6E7E-4702-B99C-E40D3DED33C3}"="1"[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole\NONREDIST]"System.EnterpriseServices.Thunk.dll"=""Are any of those likely to be a problem?I'm not ignoring your suggestion about Dial-a-Fix, IcemanND, but apparently Westley has already tried that without success. :-(Perhaps this problem may be tied to the version of XP. (I have successfully installed this update on a system running XP-Pro v2002-SP3. The problem is appearing on my MCE system (XP-MCE v2002-SP3). What operating system are you using, Westley? Thanks for all your suggestions.Cheers,Randy

submix8c
You could try Dial-a-Fix to reset the Automatic Updates service. If you don't want to let the tool do it it also shows you all the steps it will take and you can do them manually instead.I would say Windows Update on that machine is indeed having issues - there are lots of things that look like they would track back to COM permissions issues - in general, when update.exe starts failing with the error code 0xf201, this is usually COM permissions at the root cause:1. Did anyone indeed try Dial-a-Fix? Did anyone indeed follow the instructions? Did anyone try installing with Administrator rights? It would be nice if anyone/someone specified exactly what didn't work instead of "it's broke how do I fix it"...Sigh......and it would be nice if folks used codeboxes (etc.) instead of cluttering up the topic with loooooong posts....edit - see this post - your Dial-A-Fix post Edited March 15, 2009 by submix8c
