  1. Hi, Westley, That's good news. I hope that it stays fixed. I am confident, but will monitor my own system for a couple of days before I am really convinced. Please let me know if your problem recurs. Cheers, Randy
  2. Hello, Westley, I have submitted the problem to Microsoft support and received a reply that might be helpful. If Step 1 is not successful (at solving the problem of repeated re-installation prompts for KB967715), Step 2 is to attempt to install the KB967715 update in Safe Mode. In my case, after rebooting I still had the prompt to install the update for KB967715. I tried to install this update again, but this time I received a message indicating that the update was NOT successful. After rebooting again, I no longer received the prompt that this update was required. I hope that this works for you also. Please let me know if this helps you so that I can report back to Microsoft support. (btw - In looking for info about KB950582, I noticed that a variant of the above solution is also posted on http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/19263083.aspx) Cheers, Randy
  3. Hi, Westley, I have not yet found a solution to this problem. I'll be sure to post here if I do. Cheers, Randy
  4. Hi, Westley & Smurf1, Me too. I asked Joyce to please post to this forum. I'm hoping that perhaps there is just a short vacation interfering. But in the meantime, Smurf1, do you recall what the solution was, or which files needed to be replaced? Cheers, Randy
  5. Hello, Cluberti et al, I can sympathize with Westley's reluctance to play with his registry, but I'm not shy about monkeying with my own. (I make occasional images of my system disk in case of accident. :-) ) But I don't seem to have any of the values that you mentioned. What I do have in that key are the following values (and sub-keys): [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole] "DefaultLaunchPermission"=hex:01,00,04,80,5c,00,00,00,6c,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ 14,00,00,00,02,00,48,00,03,00,00,00,00,00,18,00,1f,00,00,00,01,02,00,00,00,\ 00,00,05,20,00,00,00,20,02,00,00,00,00,14,00,0b,00,00,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,\ 00,05,04,00,00,00,00,00,14,00,0b,00,00,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,05,12,00,00,\ 00,01,02,00,00,00,00,00,05,20,00,00,00,20,02,00,00,01,02,00,00,00,00,00,05,\ 20,00,00,00,20,02,00,00 "MachineLaunchRestriction"=hex:01,00,04,80,48,00,00,00,58,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ 14,00,00,00,02,00,34,00,02,00,00,00,00,00,18,00,1f,00,00,00,01,02,00,00,00,\ 00,00,05,20,00,00,00,20,02,00,00,00,00,14,00,0b,00,00,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,\ 00,01,00,00,00,00,01,02,00,00,00,00,00,05,20,00,00,00,20,02,00,00,01,02,00,\ 00,00,00,00,05,20,00,00,00,20,02,00,00 "MachineAccessRestriction"=hex:01,00,04,80,44,00,00,00,54,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ 14,00,00,00,02,00,30,00,02,00,00,00,00,00,14,00,03,00,00,00,01,01,00,00,00,\ 00,00,05,07,00,00,00,00,00,14,00,07,00,00,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,00,\ 00,00,01,02,00,00,00,00,00,05,20,00,00,00,20,02,00,00,01,02,00,00,00,00,00,\ 05,20,00,00,00,20,02,00,00 "EnableDCOM"="Y" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole\AppCompat] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole\AppCompat\ActivationSecurityCheckExemptionList] "{A50398B8-9075-4FBF-A7A1-456BF21937AD}"="1" "{AD65A69D-3831-40D7-9629-9B0B50A93843}"="1" "{0040D221-54A1-11D1-9DE0-006097042D69}"="1" "{2A6D72F1-6E7E-4702-B99C-E40D3DED33C3}"="1" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole\NONREDIST] "System.EnterpriseServices.Thunk.dll"="" Are any of those likely to be a problem? I'm not ignoring your suggestion about Dial-a-Fix, IcemanND, but apparently Westley has already tried that without success. :-( Perhaps this problem may be tied to the version of XP. (I have successfully installed this update on a system running XP-Pro v2002-SP3. The problem is appearing on my MCE system (XP-MCE v2002-SP3). What operating system are you using, Westley? Thanks for all your suggestions. Cheers, Randy
  6. Hello, James_A (or others), Re: "It is possible to delete/reset the local database and folders used by Automatic Updates, but first you should try installing the update manually." Can you provide some additional guidance about how to do this? I'm thinking it might be worth a try. Cheers, Randy
  7. Hello, James_A, et al, I also had followed the steps for the manual installation. That didn't seem to resolve the problem. I believe the update log file I mentioined that included the lines: 5.578: KB967715 installation did not complete. 5.578: Update.exe extended error code = 0xf201 was not from the manual update, but from a subsequent automatic update. Also, I have never been prompted to reboot after the installation completed, which I interpret to be another indication that the install was not successful. Despite this, when I go to "Review your update history" in the Microsoft Update web site, I see that I have performed this update seven times, and each time it is reported that the update was successful. Here's a tidbit that I have just noticed, in case it's relevant: After performing the update, the MS Update web site reports that there are no further updates required. It is not until after I reboot that this update is reported again as being required. I guess I've had the same problem with attaching the log file as Westley, but I have just re-run the update (manually, following instructions by nmX.Memnoch). The resulting log file is not too long, so I will post it at the end of this message. This log file does not contain the lines shown above, however (after rebooting) I still get the prompt to install the update. Thanks for your interest. Cheers, Randy [KB967715.log] 3.266: ================================================================================ 3.266: 2009/03/04 13:12:33.187 (local) 3.266: e:\c71d97746dd09b51cde588a2a72c5639\update\update.exe (version 6.3.13.0) 3.266: Hotfix started with following command line: 3.266: In Function GetReleaseSet, line 1240, RegQueryValueEx failed with error 0x2 4.859: In Function TestVolatileFlag, line 11825, RegOpenKeyEx failed with error 0x2 4.859: In Function TestVolatileFlag, line 11857, RegOpenKeyEx failed with error 0x2 4.859: DoInstallation: CleanPFR failed: 0x2 4.859: In Function GetReleaseSet, line 1240, RegQueryValueEx failed with error 0x2 4.859: SetProductTypes: InfProductBuildType=BuildType.IP 4.859: SetAltOsLoaderPath: No section uses DirId 65701; 8. Hi, All, I'm having the same problem as Westley. I had previously checked WindowsUpdate.log which indicated that the update was successful. However following James_A's suggestion, I looked at KB967715.log and find there lines about half-way through the log that read: 5.578: KB967715 installation did not complete. 5.578: Update.exe extended error code = 0xf201 (I tried to attach the log in case the complete file can help to resolve the problem, but get the message "Upload failed. You are not permitted to upload this type of file". I'm very new on this forum, so have lots to learn. So far, I don't understand why uploading a text file is a problem.) Near the top of the file I see these lines: 1.640: 2009/03/03 11:28:55.156 (local) 1.640: C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\fba53b5b7fa98bdc2fa6b2e0759b4674\update\update.exe (version 6.3.13.0) 1.640: Hotfix started with following command line: /si /ParentInfo:e79fc71bfddae64bbe234ddf8750571d 1.640: In Function GetReleaseSet, line 1240, RegQueryValueEx failed with error 0x2 And further down: 3.125: CreateUninstall = 0,Directory = C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB967715$ 3.125: LoadFileQueues: UpdSpGetSourceFileLocation for halmacpi.dll failed: 0xe0000102 3.140: ref tag c:\windows\system32\sp4.cab does not exist followed by several other lines reporting .cab files that don't exist. Still further down (but before the "did not complete" message) there are several identical lines: 4.062: KB967715 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not correct. Following the "did not complete" message there are these lines: 0.937: ================================================================================ 0.937: 2009/03/03 11:31:08.953 (local) 0.937: C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\9b9c80e2f055ce97c0f0b65924ea9f29\update\update.exe (version 6.3.13.0) 0.937: Failed To Enable SE_SHUTDOWN_PRIVILEGE 0.937: Hotfix started with following command line: -q -z -er /ParentInfo:111f4cbe2bfe9f47a18ed676a4294c09 0.937: In Function GetReleaseSet, line 1240, RegQueryValueEx failed with error 0x2 1.968: In Function TestVolatileFlag, line 11825, RegOpenKeyEx failed with error 0x2 1.968: In Function TestVolatileFlag, line 11857, RegOpenKeyEx failed with error 0x2 Following that there are many more lines including what appear to be duplicates of the above messages. I can see from this that there must be some problem, but haven't any idea what it is or how to fix it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Randy
