thank you darklocust, I'll be using you .ini as a starting point for making my own minimized .iso.

I'll get back here as I get is as small as possible (with internet-through-lan ability)

A couple things you'll need to keep for sure:

- Error reporting - gives the wer.dll if removed

- Windows firewall and dependencies - the firewall is very good so I would keep anyways

- Secondary logon - lets you run as administrator on apps for non-admin users w/o logging off

Was the dual core optimizer updated for Vista/7?

The last time I checked up on it, it was not written for Vista and there was some rabble about how Vista didn't need it.

I'm an old school gamer that plays UT99 so when I installed Vista, that particular game would stutter so I tried the DC Optimizer and it worked. It's not specifically compiled for Vista but it did solve my stutter problems.

On Win7, I installed it thinking that UT99 would work but the game is not playable at all so it may not even be needed. I haven't tested newer games such as L4D or CoD5 without the DCO.

After install, you have to do the scardd-somethingsomething.dll trick to activate, though.

Now that I think about it, you could probably do that ahead of time with dism.

Not sure, though.

Great idea to have a fresh thread dedicated to x64 to be able to discuss and deal with it's unique issues.

I will say that I deleted Error Reporting and Secondary Logon and have had no issues in consequence. But I don't think Secondary logon would be a big deal since I skipped user account creation in the unattended portion of vLite.

And, incidently I installed Messenger Live today and during the install it said "Installing Error Reporting." I don't know if it was a singular function for Messenger of if it saw I was missing it and reinstalled it. I'm guessing the former.

Sorry to double post, totally seperate topic.

Just want to say anyone looking for virtual drives for their Windows 7 x64. I strongly recommend the latest version of PowerISO. I have experimented with a few including magic ISO's Magic Disk and everything I've seen causes problems. Furthermore, the unistallation of these programs appears to be impossible. I don't know if it's something I've taken out during vLite or if it's a lingering bug in the beta OS. Has anyone else found this?

If you start with PowerISO you'll have no problems. It's trial software but so is your OS :-).

I tried both DX and OpenGL modes and still doesn't work. Maybe its due to ATI drivers or the card specifically?

That's weird. When I removed Error Reporting, it would not complete the installation and a pop-up would come up that wer.dll is missing or something like that.

I've come to my first problem! After my PC goes to the screensaver I can't get back out! I move my mouse around, type a bunch of crap etc. and nothing happens. It's like it's trapped. I accepted an optional update from Windows update for my Samsung monitor, but I don't know if that was the problem because since installing the OS I haven't left my PC idle long enough to see it act like this.

Anyone know what service or component is in charge of this issue? Hopefully it's correctable with a service tweak and I don't need a whole new install.

last_session.ini is attached.

Fixed this. Re-enabled my services, and presto.

New problem though. Cannot find my network drive anymore. My D-Link DNS-323 shows up in the network map, but not as an accessible volume the way it used to. Crrrrraaaaaap. Hope someone checks back here soon.

  • 4 weeks later...

why this thread died? did everyone quit trying? I'm at the end of minimizing, just have to find a System component that is crashing mmc.exe when trying to launch services.msc or msconfig.exe

EDIT: it was MDAC, I got the installation .iso down to 1744MB, though I could remove a few more components, don't think I could go under 1700MB though
