Seagate 7200.11 fail & fine dataset

Hi,

did someone have success flashing the firmware SD1A (new) with a VIA6421 or SIL3114 PCI controller? It seems it is IMPOSSIBLE.

2 of the drives ST3500320SA (still alive with SD15, one more is already dead) are just never deteced by SeaEnum, whatever I do. I also tried different SATA ports (the VIA 6421 may not see the drive on the shared PATA port: some XBOX forums).

No RAID, no AHCI, it is an old ASUS K7M mainboard. The BIOS of the VIA is not having any settings, except RAID.

Disconnected all other drives. Booted from floppy (extracted with 7Z and rawwritewin, since the CDROM is not booted). Both drives are OK with XP!

What to do? Am I REALLY the only one trying to flash with the chips above?

Ideas welcome.... I might not have many boots left...

EDIT: Solved with adaptor IDE-SATA. Although the BIOS of the m/b detected only 137GB, flashing to SD1A succeeded on 2 of my disks. The 3rd needs to be unlocked... will post my data below.

my drive is still working well, like all other seagate drives i have. i had four or five Western Digital and every one was much slower and in meanwhile defect (-> trash).

@ Seagate: stop kidding and work on the problem. i mean stop deleting posts/links and blacklisting hdds - i don't want to replace all of my seagates, especially not my ST36421A or my eight ST3450856SS! think about ibm dtla series.

To all seagate barracuda 7200.11 SD15 (and other version) owners, either broken down (by "no detect in bios", 0GB reported disc size & "the click of death") or still functioning fine:

Please register to the msfn forum and add your data to the list below so we can take a stand against seagate corporate practices. Moderators on the official seagate forum claim that our problems are not statistical significant, but judging from numerous complaints spread out over the internet we think they are! However, without a serious dataset (1000+ cases, from different countries) we don't stand a chance proving it statistically wise. So please help by adding your data.

Although the list is not helpful in restoring acces to the defective drive, we believe it is needed to:

1: Give an overview of the international spread of the problem

2: Document enough failures to disprove the claim of seagate moderators that this problem is statistically insignificant (And yes I consider this to be feasible, just look at how many people have viewed the main thread already! Their data (if relevant) is more than welcome)

3: Provide insight in the history and nature of the problem; when did the excessive failing start & do drives manufactured before a certain date last longer?

Personally I think that when the dataset includes enough drives over a large enough timespan (preferably including drives manufactured from september 2007 - present) patterns will emerge from the data, probably showing an increase in the rate of failures after a certain point in time. Ofcourse this is part speculation, but can you find (online) evidence of prior events where 7200.11 drives crap out at such a scale? If this point in time can be linked to a change in seagate production lines, like the arrival of new designs, new components, relocation to a new factory, etc. and combine this with the technical findings of fatlip, pichi, etc. we'll have a better chance understanding why this present massive failure event is happening.

Most of the data can be collected from the sticker on top of your harddrive (please keep in mind that you preferably do this when the computer is powered down, be safe). For purchase & fail date, use your memory or check receits/bills. If you are afraid that seagate will "blacklist" your drive, then only add the first 3 or 4 characters of the serial number. We will use a simple seagate date code calculator tool to translate the 5 digit code listed on your harddrive to the date it was manufactured. Thanks for your time and spread the word!

Hi there, i'm from Norway and i don't see my country listed as affected. I do however get a new computer tomorrow with the Seagate 7200.11 500GB, and i got a question. Hi there, i'm from Norway and i don't see my country listed as affected. I do however get a new computer tomorrow with the Seagate 7200.11 500GB, and i got a question. Our humble dataset is only a very small sample of the total amount of 7200.11 drives out there. Your country isn't listed because no one based in Norway has yet provided an entry. However, judging from the wide spread of the entries, this appears to be a large scale issue; even large enough for seagate to publically anounce a firmware update.. So chances are that you'll receive a faulty drive, depending on it's manufacturing date.

There was no mention of Finland on the list yet, so I decided to register and post the above data from a recently failed disk of mine. There has also been some reports of similar problems with Seagate disks in Finnish hardware forums, so I guess its safe to say that the problem probably is just as widespread here as it seems to be around the globe.

On my particular case with the 1TB Barracuda, the disk stopped responding to ata commands and was not detected on the next reboot or ever since. However, after several attempts I managed to get it detected on another computer with P965 chipset and its SATA-controller, but then again the disk didn't survive through Seatools long self-test. I'm probably going to try the SD1A firmware update next and see what happens.

NB. I was unable to decode manufacturing date from the actual date code, but my failed disk certainly was older than from December 2008. If anyone else can determine the exact manufacturing date from the date code above, please do.

Hi, I've added Finland to the map, thanks for your entry. As long as your drive is detected at Bios level you can perform the firmware update offered by seagate. BTW The actual manufacturing date of your disk is 4 march 2008.
