mikesw Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Are there any tools to dump the firmware from either IDE or SATA HDDs? Since we are doing backups of our data, might as well backup our HDD firmware just in case it is getting corrupted. Moreover, if people have a particular HDDmodel and one wants the newest firmware version and seagate plays dump (saying your is the latest), one can getit and be up to date.
mikesw Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 (edited) Hi all. I just registered after reading the 26 pages in this thread.I have in my fileserver2x ST3500630AS1x ST3500841AS1x ST3750330ASI have also bought two 1TB Seagate drives to expand with.So far none of them has failed, but this thread has really gotten me spooked. With the amount of data, I cant keep backups of it all. But for the essential data, I use on-line and off-line backup. I chose Seagate as they were highly recommended and came with a 5 year warranty, but after reading how they have been treating this problem, I can't keep recommending them. For people relying on optical media as a backup, I must mention that I have had discs fail (only high quality brand media) after little less than a year. I am looking into buying an Iomega Rev or a RDX backup station.Instead of the IOMEGA rev which is limited in capacity, why not try the 2.5 inch laptop drives? They are cheap. a WD 250 Gig BEVE is only$79.99 at newegg.com or equiv where you are at. Since this is IDE (you could buy SATA's which are 500 gig too, but you may wantto use a different interface type to reduce the risk of laptop drives having the same problem as 3.5 inch ones if they have the same interfaetype). I have the 250 gig WD BEVE IDE drive as backup and use the Sabrent USB to IDE/SATA adaptor. The adaptor has an externalpower adaptor, but since I'm using 2.5 inch, I can run it off the USB cable for power and read/write the drive with the USB to IDE adaptor. The same would apply to a 2.5 inch SATA laptop drive in using the USB as the power I believe but I don't have SATA laptop drives at themoment.Seehttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16812156017or maybe this onehttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...82E16812816014RNote: I did have to buy a SATA to molex power cable (is cheap) since the one that came with the IDE/SATA adaptor already haddamaged pins in the connector which kept coming out. After doing this, the Sabrent adaptor device works great.Other convertors are IDE to or from SATA:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16812232004http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822998001http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822998008 Edited January 14, 2009 by mikesw
Fuzzy_3D Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 I'm a little reluctant to peek inside it or modify it yet as I'll still need it in 100% working condition for other people sending me in drives.Could you at least post some pictures of the kit so everyone can see it? We're all very curious here.
valdas Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 These drives are failing at very accelerated rate. ST3750330AS newegg.com reviewLasted 2 weeks Pros: Great drive initially. Fast and quiet.Cons: Drive was working fine for 2 weeks, rebooted, BIOS fails to detect drive. No clicks of death, no slow performace, no warning at all.
DerSnoezie Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 These drives are failing at very accelerated rate.Yeah and right now the news is spreading like a wildfire!

poolcarpet Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Well, make sure you have backups! That's one of the reason we are trying to make this thread well known and easily searched. So that any owners of this model can be forewarned and don't end up like some of us here with personal data stuck in the 'unresponding' drive.Heya!Wow, lots of failures.. here are some info regarding my hdds:9QJ1***5:ST31000340AS:9BX158-303:SD15:08526:KRATSG:August2008:OEM:me0w:SWEDEN:still running9QJ1***G:ST31000340AS:9BX158-303:SD15:08526:KRATSG:August2008:OEM:me0w:SWEDEN:still running5QJ0***T:ST31000340AS:9BX158-303:SD15:08524:WUXISG:August2008:OEM:me0w:SWEDEN:still running9QM4***L:ST3500320AS:9BX154-303:SD15:08525:KRATSG:August2008:OEM:me0w:SWEDEN:still running9QM1***F:ST3500320AS:9BX154-303:SD15:08345:KRATSG:Mars2008:OEM:me0w:SWEDEN:still runningThey're still running fine.. I've replaced all of mine with WD Blacks for now so I feel a bit more secure about my data. I hope Seagate will fix this problem cause I'd still like to continue to use my Seagates.
frallanfree Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 (edited) Hello guys,I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 drive with the data below that is in bsy-state and not found in bios.Serial Number: 6QM0BQ61Model Number: ST3500320ASFirmware Revision: SD15I would be glad if someone could give me and others pictures/instructions on how to build a rs232 terminal module and with steps on how to remove this bsy-mode with hyperterminal.Best regards to all of you that is fighting for your data back on this crappy drives.Richard.N (Sweden) Edited January 14, 2009 by frallanfree

Or are you still using them for low importance tasks?

me0w Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Thanks for the data meow! Have you currently shelved these drives, waiting for a segate firmware fix/recall? Or are you still using them for low importance tasks? You're welcome! Well, I'm running two of the 1TB drives for less important data and the three others in another box which I am currently booting as many times as I can.. trying to get the problem but no "luck" so far. It should also be noted that I still got the jumper on + running them on a cheap controller card (SiL3114).
