Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Troubles

Recommended Posts

I also have 2 Chinese 500GB drives up and running right now, including a refurbished replacement drive (resp. from the 6QM and 5QM series). Power on hours have been respectively 217 and 77 and I'm keeping a close eye on both these puppies.. BTW all my drives are OEM.

Hey guys, sorry I didn't really read all the pages in this thread + on the Seagate forums but I have a question...

Has any (more like how many) 7200.11 SD15 drive MADE IN CHINA failed yet? I got a 500GB one from NCIX a couple days ago sitting on my desk, never used.

If the SiteCode is WUXISG then the disk is made in China. and yes, according to the list the China ones are failing too but apparently (according to the list again...) a lot less than the Thailand ones (KRATSG ones).

Saludos, ToKuRo.

Thank you for the quick response, ToKuRo. I have a site code of SUZHSG and I will definately post back with the results when I start using it.

I've just spent the last few hours trying to talk to my drive through a terminal, but although I can see the data going into the drive via an oscilloscope the drive itself is not responding and I cannot see anything being transmitted on the pins. I have tested the terminal/interface with an old IDE drive and a SATA Seagate(7200.9 - which incidentally, the Rx and Tx are the other way around) and they both responded.

I am currently unsure if I have the same problem or whether this is a just a PCB failure although I would suggest that people try talking to the HDD and make sure that the drive is reporting BSY.

i'm updating my info with my country (Italy) and disk type (OEM).

I have other 3 500gb Seagate 7200.11 SD15, i'm going to throw them in the WC. One of the worst investments i made. A big loss of data, time and money.

As Blichev said, try to create links to this thread on blogs, other forums, everywhere. This will help to spread the problem and improve visibility on google searches. Also, if you use social sites like delicious or digg, add a link there too. This may help too. No Seagate lawyer can stop this.

Just a couple ideas...

My PCB has some excessive tarnishing on most of the silver areas. Anyone else?

The PCB is labeled as, "PCB 100466725 REV A DLAJ-4"

Mine was an OEM drive purchased from Newegg. Any retail drives dying?

Keddar my PCB label is identical to yours. Also OEM, also purchased from Newegg.

And sorry about country (I'm in USA of course), I saw other people in the list writing MADE IN and assumed thats what it was for.

Interesting, but I guess the fundamental question there is if our PCBs are tarnished or not. Maybe everybody should (if you can) post pictures of our PCB's to compare them and see if they are ok or not. I'll post mine later (it's Saturday and my daughter wants her dad to spend his time only with her.) btw:Updated some OEM values...

If anyone is looking for a cheaper data replacement option I spoke to a guy in Toronto who will resurrect these drives for $100. No point in rewarding Seagate's data recovery/extortion service...

PM me if you want his email.

Look at the middle part of the drive (photo as attached), is there a note saying it's for OEM?? Does everyone's failed drive have the OEM note? or are some of the failed disks retail versions??

I have one of the retail drives that failed. Even so, there is a note in the middle "This drive is manufactured by Seagate for OEM distro", but it came in retail packaging, guess they make all drives the same and OEM drives are thrown into a pile without packaging.

Here is one more 1TB model. The BIOS can still see it, but it hangs on Win boot. No help. I still didn't RMA this one, because I don't want to get another SD15 drive. We have 4 pcs. ST3250620NS 250GB in two servers (RAID1 config) and they are working ok for now. All bought in year 2008.

I was long time Seagate supporter, used to run PC company and we sold & installed a lot of Seagate disks. They used to be the most reliable. Month after I bought mine ST31000340AS friend of mine (who is still in PC industry) told me that they have huge return of this model. I wish I talked with him before purchase.

So, the problem with 7200.11 series is not from yesterday. Every decent company would fix the problem in meantime. What are they waiting for? More RMAs?

Hi,

my Barracuda 7200.11 (Firmware SD15, about 3 month old) was also infected (2009/1/1) by

Seagate's Data-Recovery printing money BUSY feature.

After reading a few different threads about this, I registered for the salvationData board

in hope to get some more information to solve this issue by myself via the terminal.

On the salvationData board I met a guy who is, especially for germans (maybe for europeans)

very helpful, because he has bought the latest version of the HD Doctor for Seagate.

Yesterday, I sent him my HD. Just 24 hours later, he replies

the disk is doing well again, after he has processed it with HD Doctor.

If someone is interested, I will send the URL by PM, because the

guy (now Hero) is very new in this business oneself (but not a beginner).

What will be recommendations regarding new 1TB driver vendor. Well, I would say we need to replace all that 1TB ST31000340AS drives with something else.

1) Hitachi HDS721010KLA330 - didn't mess with this company since IBM similar "nice" story. Are they any good in this days? They could be ok.

2) WD - hmmh, I had some really bad experiences with WD in the past

3) Samsung HD103UJ - users also reported some dead drives

What you will buy as Seagate replacement or what you already bought?

Cheers

How much you paid repair, if it's not secret?
