namo Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 (edited) Hello,I have 16GB Flash Drive and it seems fake. I think its true size 1.95GB(its real commercial capacty might be 2GB) ( I have fill it with video files they working before 1.95GB; and file after that are corrupted ).I want to show the true Capacity. I have tried iformat 4.18, iformat2 1.19 and 1.32, pdx8_2k_v327 and PDx16. But non of these show the flash drive.I bought fake 16GB drive before and it was fake 2GB, PDx16 and iformat2 1.32 were detecting it. I used iformt2 1.32.I want to show the true Capacity To safe uncorrupted files.Note: from the device manager, the drive is Hisun Flash Drive USB deviceadditional information:Name: Flash Disk (USB1.1)Logic Driver: K:\ VID&PID: Vid_2008&Pid_2018Speed: full speedVendorID: HisunProductID: Flash DiskProduct Revision: 2.10Vendor Description: Hisun Product Description: Flash Disk Serial Number: O20070925A000392the Dis Mangament shows:16GB FAT32healthythe USB port informationDevice Descriptor:bcdUSB: 0x0110bDeviceClass: 0x00bDeviceSubClass: 0x00bDeviceProtocol: 0x00bMaxPacketSize0: 0x40 (64)idVendor: 0x2008idProduct: 0x2018bcdDevice: 0x0000iManufacturer: 0x01iProduct: 0x02iSerialNumber: 0x03bNumConfigurations: 0x01ConnectionStatus: DeviceConnectedCurrent Config Value: 0x01Device Bus Speed: FullDevice Address: 0x05Open Pipes: 2Endpoint Descriptor:bEndpointAddress: 0x81Transfer Type: BulkwMaxPacketSize: 0x0040 (64)bInterval: 0x00Endpoint Descriptor:bEndpointAddress: 0x00Transfer Type: ControlwMaxPacketSize: 0x0507 (1287)wInterval: 0x0201bSyncAddress: 0x40Noe: I have tested the file using the explainarion given in the attached file.Test_Fake_flash_memory.txt Edited December 30, 2007 by namo
namo Posted December 30, 2007 Author Posted December 30, 2007 (edited) How does it show in Disk Management ?I have added several small wave files in the flash drive until 1.95GB and after that the file started to become corupted so I know now that the true size is 1.95GB.the Dis Mangament shows:16GB FAT32healthyBut it surely not healthy. Tarun Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 This link details how to check if the flash drive is fake. And this link tells you what you can do.What is the manufacturer of the flash drive in question?
jaclaz Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 (edited) To try and identify the stick and (hopefully) the controller used:Check the Vid and Pid of the stick:http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=15776Check the list:http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=1659Try making an image of the stick using either:Roadkil's Disk Image:http://www.roadkil.net/program.php?ProgramID=12ordsfo from the DSFOK toolkit:http://members.ozemail.com.au/~nulifetv/freezip/freeware/http://members.ozemail.com.au/~nulifetv/fr...eware/dsfok.zipSize of resulting image should be the correct size.Edit:HISUN should be this one:http://www.hisuntec.cn/EN/index.html(nothing really useful there) jaclaz Edited December 30, 2007 by jaclaz

namo Posted December 30, 2007 Author Posted December 30, 2007 I have edit my first post to have more information about my flash drive.
Kelsenellenelvian Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 I know that the flash drive is fake. It is approximately 1.95GB but I want to show its true capacityHUH? If it is only 1.95 gigs then it is a 2 gig USB drive. You got suckered. You need to follow the links in the previous post and get your money back.My memorex 2 gig USB drive shows as 1.91 gigs.
bj-kaiser Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 The problem is even worse, my preferred magazine already had some articles about this problem.Basically, the controllers of small sticks will be manipulated to report more capacity than there is hardware-wise. Everything that goes over the limit of the built-in flash, gets reported as good write by the controller, but when you try to read the data there all you get are zeros.Ironically, their own PR department got betrayed, they had an offer with an USB flash disk as welcome gift. And said UFDs where manipulated in the same way.
jaclaz Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 I don't want to test the flash drive but show its true capacity. I know that I can store up to 1.95GB.Yep, we got that. 1.95 Gb is NOT however an exact capacity, the actual "RAW" capacity of a stick depends on the kind of Flash IC are inside it, theoretically capacity goes like this:128 Mb 131.072.000 bytes256 Mb 262.144.000 bytes512 Mb 524.288.000 bytes1 Gb 1.048.576.000 bytes2 Gb 2.097.152.000 bytessome controllers leave this entire capacity "available", some use part of this capacity for internal use, knowing the exact (in bytes) amount of available space may help in identifying the controller. The amount you are getting is the capacity after formatting (i.e. excluding the amount of space used by filesystem structures, which can vary depending on filesystem used and, in the case of FAT16/FAT32, on the size of clusters the format uses).Point is, the ONLY way to do what you want is getting to know which EXACT make/model of USB controller is inside the stick AND with this information search for and hopefully find the right "Manufacturer Utility" or "Mass Production Tool" capable to reset the capacity data to the correct values. This site:http://www.everythingusb.com/forums/forumd...php?forumid=109has lots of info about "fake" drives, and some possible ways to tru and fix them (see this just as an example):http://www.everythingusb.com/forums/showth...mp;postid=25758jaclaz

I have check the acual size by adding several wav aduio files of size 860 KB using a code in bat file, the file were working until 1.95GB after that if I add one file it will work have the audio clip and the next one I add doesn't work. so the aproximate maximum size of files that I can but in the flash drive is 1.95 GB (2,103,115,776 bytes). THis is aproximation because if I add file less than 500KB might work but bigger than that will not work. Edited December 30, 2007 by namo
namo Posted December 30, 2007 Author Posted December 30, 2007 I have added the test method I used to confirm that I have approximately 1.95GB that I can store files without corruption.
namo Posted December 31, 2007 Author Posted December 31, 2007 (edited) I tried to format the Disk as NTFS but the format failed. If it is not possible to show the true Capacity, Is there easy way to partition the Flash drive so I can put 1.95GB in First one and the rest in the second one.; and Can this solve the problem? I mean is the first portion of storing will go to the first disk. Edited December 31, 2007 by namo
