The newer 5.5x versions fail to start with an Abnormal program termination error...

It's a shame really since 5.5x introduces some good plugins...

That's true but Opera works without KernelEx (personally, I'm using Opera 10 Beta 2) and VLC need it (in fact, latest version is 1.0.1).

It should run fine, and I think to run it on Windows 95 all you need to do is copy across one DLL, the name of which eludes me right now.

Which DLL??? Is VideoLAN v1.0 stable under Win98SE? At http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html#win98 they still refer to v0.8.6 as latest release for Win9x

I am using as main media player VideoLAN v0.8.6i under Win98SE, without KernelEx 4.0 Final. Any chance of getting v1.0 to work without KernelEx? Would a replacement of the files of v0.8.6i by the files of VideoLAN v1.0 work, without installation?

I can't remember. i don't really bother with 9x anymore, I consider it a dead OS and for me often just amounts to stress and more hassle than XP. But I am positive that about two months ago I installed the latest VLC, pretty sure it was version 1.0 because I remember the improved interface over the old one. I had one problem with it not playing files (gave an error about an ordinal or something? I really can't remember) and I just googled and installed the Microsoft Layer for Unicode http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&saf...mp;oq=&aqi=

Here is one I wish I would have had about 6 months ago.... "Killbox" Was mentioned else-where, but still developed and still supports 9x.

I am thinking of switching to Avira, from Avast, for my 98SE box, but I am not sure what the update is on it in this thread. The link at Download.com goes to the latest free Avira AntiVir, which does not support 98SE/ME, not 7.06.00.268 (although you can find it somewhere else). The reason I would like to change antivirus is that Avast seems to bog down my 400mhz PC, so I am wondering if Avira is less of a load.

But the bigger question is... can 7.06.00.268 still update its virus database to the latest from Avira's servers? If not, then I guess I will pass.
