RetroOS Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Well, it looks like GoldWave 5.25 is the last version that works in Windows 9x...The newer 5.5x versions fail to start with an Abnormal program termination error...It's a shame really since 5.5x introduces some good plugins...LAST - SHAR - GoldWave 5.25 (official last is 4.26) --- http://www.oldapps.com/goldwave.php?old_goldwave=16
triger49 Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 My wife has a recipe archive that would rival any public library, so I hunted for months for a decent recipe manager! Finally, after being disappointed over a whole bunch, I came across this one....freewarePieceofCake System requirements:Windows 95 or later (95, 98, NT, ME, 2000, XP, Vista). 15 MB available space on hard disk. http://www.pieceofcake.ws/Jake

rainyd Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 VLC 1.0 was recently released and works fine on Windows 98. As does Opera 9.That's true but Opera works without KernelEx (personally, I'm using Opera 10 Beta 2) and VLC need it (in fact, latest version is 1.0.1).Btw, halohalo, thank you for the links with latest Java JRE.
JustinStacey.x Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 (edited) VLC does not need Kernel Ex.It should run fine, and I think to run it on Windows 95 all you need to do is copy across one DLL, the name of which eludes me right now. Edited August 6, 2009 by JustinStacey.x

At http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html#win98 they still refer to v0.8.6 as latest release for Win9x

Without it you can't install VLC on Win9x systems.

Without it you can't install VLC on Win9x systems. On the other hand:VLC does not need Kernel Ex.I am using as main media player VideoLAN v0.8.6i under Win98SE, without KernelEx 4.0 Final. Any chance of getting v1.0 to work without KernelEx? Would a replacement of the files of v0.8.6i by the files of VideoLAN v1.0 work, without installation? Edited August 6, 2009 by Multibooter
JustinStacey.x Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I can't remember. i don't really bother with 9x anymore, I consider it a dead OS and for me often just amounts to stress and more hassle than XP. But I am positive that about two months ago I installed the latest VLC, pretty sure it was version 1.0 because I remember the improved interface over the old one. I had one problem with it not playing files (gave an error about an ordinal or something? I really can't remember) and I just googled and installed the Microsoft Layer for Unicode http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&saf...mp;oq=&aqi= And then it worked
triger49 Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 (edited) Here is one I wish I would have had about 6 months ago.... "Killbox" Was mentioned else-where, but still developed and still supports 9x.From the website ...KillBox is a tool to delete in-use files, if the file is running, KillBox will attempt to end the process (close the running file) and delete it.And alot more, such as unregsrv a dll before delete....backup folder....nuke on boot...etchttp://killbox.net/Tested on my 98se and ME machines ...works great!Jake Edited August 8, 2009 by triger49

technoid Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 (edited) ONGD - FREE - Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic 7.06.00.268 --- http://www.download.com/Avira-AntiVir-Pers...ml?tag=lst-0-10I am thinking of switching to Avira, from Avast, for my 98SE box, but I am not sure what the update is on it in this thread. The link at Download.com goes to the latest free Avira AntiVir, which does not support 98SE/ME, not 7.06.00.268 (although you can find it somewhere else). The reason I would like to change antivirus is that Avast seems to bog down my 400mhz PC, so I am wondering if Avira is less of a load. But the bigger question is... can 7.06.00.268 still update its virus database to the latest from Avira's servers? If not, then I guess I will pass. Edited August 14, 2009 by technoid
