  1. I think its fun when I try to help people with problems I have no experience in. I am good at general ideas sometimes that make other people remember or think of something to try. Either way, it usually turns out to be a learning experience for myself anyways. Glad I could help.
  2. Not knowing how exactly your AD is set up, it could be overriden. Say, for example, there is some folder or accout or Group or OU permission that has a Special Permission with a Deny checked for something, this can override using the SYSTEM. Or perhaps a GPO is set to disallow something that the installer needs for that user. Do you get a specific error? Also make sure to use the following: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc758958.aspx From Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Administrator's Pocket Consultant: Is your Logon Script a batch file? You could try recoding as AutoIT (or similar) and set Runas option to an account with administrative access.
  3. This could be a couple problems. I will ramble this off maybe it will help you. 1. The OPSI client is a service that you should see in the Services snap-in. See what account is used for Log On. Make sure that account has full permissions to anyplace it needs like Program Files or Application Data or Local Settings\Temp. If you have any GPOs running that disable any folder access, check those also. As a test, you could try setting the Log On account to something else if the account specified is not in an Administrators group. Alternatively, if it uses a special account, you could add that account to the Local Administrators group. 2. Check to make sure that the installation is not being blocked by any anti-virus programs. There are cases on our servers where the antivirus will halt a program from executing and not show anything about it, so at first we think that the program is just busted.
  4. Compressing the C drive is a bad idea only in the fact that you will add a delay everytime you try to use the compressed files as Windows will have to expand them before accessing them. Typically you only should compress files that are not used or accessed frequently. As an example, you could compress archived data, or the i386 folder, but not the User Profile, the config folder or Temporary Internet Files.
  5. I hear about GOTOMYPC on the radio, its supposed to be similar to Logmein.
  6. There may be certain drivers for some DEVICES that have trouble at USB 2.0, but not the controllers.
  7. Resource Tuner Console http://www.soft32.com/download_129097.html possibly... XN Resource Editor http://www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/d10resourceeditor.htm based on a post in this thread: http://www.virtualplastic.net/msgboard/thr...&thread=334
  8. You need a separator in the line. Like a semicolon as in my path example.
  9. I was also wondering from reading the manual. It says that on the secondary inputs (not HDMI or DVI) you could set the screen to display at actual size. Wouldn't this mean you would have a really tiny DOS box in the middle of the screen surrounded by black?
  10. Hallo, Are you running the install off the network resource? Do you have the option of copying the install to the client and then running it from there? Sometimes we have this problem also because the network traffic can interfere with running a program from the network share.
  11. What Server is running your domain? What user is running the script? You may need to add that user into the proper group.
  12. I say that because sometimes an update will allow you to properly install a driver. We don't just to XP, but other Windows. And one example is the UUA driver that you need the hotfix (KB888111) for (sometimes) in order to properly install the sound driver.
  13. No, whether you are using a dual or quad CPU, it is still the same HAL.DLL so you won't have to worry. When you boot up for the first time, Vista will silently detect and install the new processor and will make any changes without you knowing. At worse, it will pop activation but I doubt it.
  14. No, Fallout 3 ISN'T anything like Oblivion anymore. The Fighting system is lots different with the Elder Scrolls (Oblivion) fighting system, Fallout 3 is a bit smaller then Oblivion and every character (a few 100s in the game) have all a different voice, so this isnt really compared to Oblivion, but yes, (lots of commas ) some stuff in the game like talking to characters, many different quests and all those things, are made the same way as in Oblivion. *phew* Much talking ehh? Yes on the outside, concerning game elements, size of the world map, number of characters, etc, you are correct, it is very different. What isn't different is that it uses a modified/updated Gamebryo Engine and an obvious improvement is DirectX 10+ support, which was not in the version that Oblivion used.
  15. You'll beat me for sure! 1x 20GB 1x 20GB 1x 120GB 160GB + 20GB in Win98 PC 180GB Don't know about my 8 notebooks tho... probably not enough to crack 200GB tho. wait I got a 4GB Ipod too... does that count?
  16. Ghostserver was checked out by our Server Lord on Friday and he "fixed it" only to fail about 30 minutes later. So he checked it again and recommended that we replace one of the drives to rebuild the array. Today I got a new Western Digital 250GB SATA II RAID Edition drive, which is now waiting for the Server Lord to come into work tomorrow. I got to come in early this morning to pull a migration. We moved the production Ghost/File Server (Vistaserver) across the room. Rewire the room. Remove 4 NetGear routers. Renamed the WDS to Imagex. Added Vistaserver to the domain. Wrote up a new SoP for the Imagex Server regarding file usage and naming conventions, access privledges, etc. We are still suffering from the .83% Upload limit for whatever reason, which is delaying me updating all the Vista images. I get to contact a dude at Microsoft about that, since I get better results on an upload to Uncle Socks than to Imagex. Makes no sense to me really. Deployment times are averaging around 2 minutes for a 3GB+ image... not too bad eh? An additional difference is that after joining Vistaserver to the domain, and logging into the domain, it stopped allowing remote connections without a password. Previously it was set up to automatically accept all incoming connections with the Guest account. I'm not sure if it really matters enough for me to change that back. Currently, Sixshot is swapped out and is being used to recreate standard Vista images, to be used until I craft up some autounattend goodness to launch from the distribution share.
  17. XP images are hardware (HAL, Mass Storage) dependent, but Vista are not. For Vista, generalizing will only remove the display adapter (and unsigned drivers) if redeployed to like hardware. Probably a little offtopic here, but its relatively easy to swap HALs with DEVCON and VBScript. (I'm sure there are even easier ways, but thats what I used long ago...) Yes, this process is covered here as well. http://www.msfn.org/board/WDS-WinPE-HALs-XP-Vis-t115243.html
  18. You missed it there. It was listed, here is the link: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwar...228〈=en You need to put this file on a floppy disk. Of course you can't just put the zip or exe on there, but the INF, CAT, SYS and other files inside of it. Then you can either put these in with nLite or hit the F6 during the Text Mode Setup of Windows.
  19. You can get the driver from Intel's website by looking up your motherboard or card model, or by going to driverpacks.net. Is the Network Adapter not showing up properly in Device Manager?
  20. You cannot make a USB 1.1 controller into a USB 2.0 controller by using software. That is determined by the hardware itself. I wouldn't worry about what name Windows has for it in Device Manager, just as long as it works properly. The drivers for USB Controllers are in Windows. So if you want a newer driver, install the latest service pack. But honestly, USB Drivers haven't changed much except for bugfixes in certain situations. The sure-fire bet to see if it is a USB 2.0 Controller is to plug a USB Disk Drive (UFD, Jump Drive, Dongle, whatever) into it, or a Camera, and see if it says "This Device Can Perform Faster". If you get that message, it isn't USB 2.0. If you don't get that message, unless you have an older device, it should be. There are exceptions, for example, the Asus EEE PC says their ports are USB 2.0 when in fact they have USB 2.0 controllers but the ports actually run at 1.1 speeds.
  21. You want to put your path in as follows: key = HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DevicePath type = REG_EXPAND_SZ default value = %SystemRoot%\inf; example value = %SystemRoot%\inf;G:; The line with Installation Sources in your post is formatted wrong. HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\Installation Sources = C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache G:\ ! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------^
  22. Maybe try running the updates before you install the software. I always install updates after NIC is installed but before everything else.
  23. Did you check to make sure they didn't get renamed on you? http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb490901.aspx
  24. This happens usually because Windows is busy doing something else, and redrawing the screen isn't its highest priority. If it is a rare condition then that is ok, it happens to almost everyone. You can try updating your video driver, but that might not be enough if this happens all the time. But if it is happening all the time, you might want to look at your system performance, like RAM, Hard Disk space, and number of programs running. You may also have some badly written programs with memory leaks/holes that do not clear data out of memory when it is done using it (like old versions of firefox) that might be affecting your computer as well.
  25. You do realise that Fallout 3 is Oblivion with higher requirements right?
