  1. It may be helpful to find out what is on this blue screen it stops at. Configure the computer to not reboot. When you boot using F8, there will be an option that says "Disable automatic restart on system failure" or something like that. Hit that one, then choose to boot into your OS. It should just show you the screen now and not reboot. Tell us what it says on that screen and we may have a better lead for you.
  2. Welcome aboard! I'll move this to the Software Hangout where this topic will get more exposure.
  3. This happens to me too. I believe in order to keep them in there, you need to put them in the install image. I haven't experimented with it all yet, but this is my only lead.
  4. Well the RIAA doesn't have this power and won't. Its controlled by NASCAP, but they are bound by US Copyright laws. Anything within the free domain is fair game. I've had to deal with NASCAP in the past, and its just plain annoying. However the main point of using an older OS still comes down to one point. You only really need what can run your apps. There is nothing wrong with using Win 9x at all. Some people do it because they have no need to upgrade. My main upgrading point was always because I wanted to use a certain program and, at the time, it couldn't be run on an older OS. Nowadays, there are many programs and VMs available that allow older programs to run on newer OSes, but at one point those were not available. And you must remember, a lot of the time, people who use Win 9x likely also have other computers using something newer.
  5. Where's the sliver of my excuse? I never use Windows Updates! Well, except I'm on XP with IE6!
  6. I have seen this in action, but honestly at the time, I was not in any position to find out why. When I saw this was when I worked for an ISP and our primary DNS server was down. Not inaccessable mind you, but the DNS portion wasn't working. Secondary DNS did not work on Mac or PC clients. I'd also like to know what causes this, just for my own knowledge. PS: I wanted to add that the environment was totally different. My belief was that it was a standard or protocol issue. Since my company used SunOS/Solaris (DHCP, DNS) and Cisco (Routing) for all networking systems.
  7. If you are referring to HotStart, then you may need a BIOS update, or else your notebook may not even support it at all. Otherwise, try lookup up keyboard re-mappers and see if some give you that option. I had to do such a thing in order to assign a function to the F15 key (Mac keyboard on PC) for a game I had tried. I remember those programs I had tried (many did not have the function i needed) they had a ton of other options. I do not have any left saved so I can't give you any examples.
  8. I agree with the shell idea as well. You may want to put a button on your program that can launch the command prompt just for support reasons.
  9. Ah good! One less thing to say then.
  10. Yes if only we could have more OSes like DOS and OS/2 Warp... Maybe even Netware... then it would be even better!
  11. Yeah it was a pretty screwed up show, but Ren & Stimpy was worse. I think they have Rocko on Hulu but not sure. The Doors - The End
  12. Take a look at Terabyte Unlimited's website. They have some freeware utilities that may be useful to you. http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/downloads-free-software.htm
  13. So there is clearly no way for me to create the recovery partition from the recovery disc by any means? I can't say for certain. My company makes our own recovery discs and not from the SoftThinks software. Hmmmm but thanks for making me think of that! Alas, as I have never used their software to create a recovery disc (we only use it for HDD based recovery) I do not know what abilities it has. However, I am going to wager a guess that the CD may actually have the ability to rebuild the partition, but it won't help you at all. See, when the partition (or the CD) boots, it checks for a USB key. If that USB key is present, it unlocks different options. This USB key is encrypted and contains the licenses to create, recreate, or activate the recovery partition. Without that, even if the CD you have could recreate the partition, you wouldn't ever see that option.
  14. Ah ha! The theme to Rocko's Modern Life!
  15. Oh no, the T word! DIVs are your friend! hee hee.
  16. Yeah, I don't think that a general forum is needed. This isn't a general computer type website, we try to be very specific about different things. Typically anything that could be something relating to multiple versions of Windows can best be placed in Software, Hardware, Network or other places like that. That's how I see it at least. Its already crazy enough at times too. Like how you can have a topic that would fit in Unattended Vista, Windows PE, Software Hangout and Server 2003! There is so much coverage sometimes I even get confused where some topics have been made, in case I need to link to them.
  17. Juno Reactor - Hotaka (12" Dance Version) recently went to see District 9, and there was a preview for another movie... name escapes me, but it had Juno Reactor music in the background. I gotta go see that. They've also done other movies like Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Mortal Kombat and the last 2 Matrix movies, among other things like the anime opening for Texhnolyze. I tried to book them for a show once, but I was sniped from another promoter in my area!
  18. HP has a tool on their site that they say will fix the F11 function, but it won't recreate the partition if you deleted it.
  19. Do you have the Acrobat Reader installed? If so, it is possible you lost your file association. Try opening Acrobat Reader manually, and then do a File->Open on the PDF file to see if it can read it.
  20. I can't give you all the information, but I can hopefully explain a little. Retail and OEM (DSP) copies of Windows have a 30 day activation timer. After 30 days, you must activate in order to use Windows further. There are other copies of Windows installed by OEMs (the kind where you only get a recovery disk with the computer) that you do not have to activate. In fact, you can't activate them. The activation is done by the OEM company (like Dell, HP) before the computer is sold to the distributor, store or end user. So actually, they are activated before ending up in your hands, so from your point of view, they do not get activated.
  21. I haven't installed a printer locally on 7 yet, but in other Windows versions, there is a way to install additional (legacy) drivers. Its in the printer properties someplace. I had to do that to get a printer connected to an XP computer to be shared onto a 7 x64 over the network.
  22. Indeed. No discounts for us! Check out the forum rules too.
  23. We shall see what we can do
