  1. Oh save me lord! hey, ethux: You need to reboot once after setting that swap-file command. (Now I understand, it wasn't "stuck" as you say - it simply needed a restart). YAY! So my tweak does work invariably after all.
  2. go for the RP alternative. RP10 has all that crap (which you asked about) and more.
  3. Whoa! There's no ver 8.6 8.1 is the newest available. Yup, use the corporate edition of NAV (it's called Symantec AV Corp.) There's ways to make server-rejecting apps (like nav2k1) to work on a server, but it involves registry-editing, so better do what the others here suggest.
  4. Hey GM, thanx for the quick response. Please detail what IE install cabs you retain? Bcos my IE6 SP1 installer (after deleting win9x and XP-related files) for win2k amounts to 27 MB. Probably you could list out the files you retain after deleting the unnecessary ones. But nevertheless, you do know why we want to slip-stream IE6 SP1 into w2k - saves on headache, incompatibility/version-conflict, time, etc.
  5. After setting your swap-file, you need to re-start. But since you say you have done that as well, I'd look for other reasons: Does your Virtual machine have enough free Hard-disk space? Did you install the VPC tools for the guest OS? Is your VM hosted on a FAT32 partition on your host? (instead of NTFS as it should be) If none of these reasons are true, then just dump VPC2004 - it just has too many bugs. VMware is 7x faster. As for the swap-space tweak I posted, it has worked invariably in all _real_ machines and in VMware - only VPC seems to have a problem (the problem you reported is the first time my tweak does not seem to work).
  6. If you create the iso using the 'Image Recorder' virtual burner in Nero6, the files won't get corrupted (and therefore prevent what you described in your 1st post in this thread). No, it can't do that. It will simulate its own devices. For example, if you have a Radeon9500 AGP card, your virtual machine will still see only "VMware SVGA II" graphics card (which is what VMware tells your VM). Same way, your real NIC has no relevance in a VM, as VMware will tell the VM that it is operating on an "AMD PCNET -----" NIC.
  7. @thread T-12 (svcpack.inf) is not a very good place to install software apps. It is fine with hotfixes, but not much else, since it operates outside the context of any logged-on user. Use T-13 (cmdlines) for IE/OE/WMP etc. That's right, in fact, who knows - they may actually have some documentation on how to integrate IE6 SP1 into w2k somewhere on technet.ANNOUNCEMENT: Calling all the super-heroes who managed to slipstream dX9 and WMP9 into winxp SP1 to somehow give us a solution to this problem as well.
  8. It's not! (or maybe you want to describe it as a tragi-comedy). Browser tying into the OS at system-level (as IE does) can create plenty of problems as MS has found out, and still is. With WS2k3, they have taken a step in the right direction - by de-linking it (and IIS 6 server) from privileged levels and the general UI shell. @Drewdatrip FYKI, Firefox is more compatible than IE. As for the few sites which seem "IE-only" it's their problem and loss, not of firefox (in any case, change firefox's browser identification string to 'Win32/IE 6' and even those sites become available). What's more, take a few minutes to configure firefox - and enjoy more functionality and other benefits than IE. @b0gus b0b Sadly, you're right. But there are ways and means!!!Use tools to speed up firefox and reduce its memory usage (just google for it). You'll find firefox is actually faster than any other browser available (even on a 32 MB, 233 MHz machine).
  9. The "Run As" facility requires the "Terminal Services" service to be running. Run "services.msc" as an admin and see if "Terminal Services" service is disabled from auto-starting -- if it is disabled, "Run As" will be unavailable. Alternatively, try creating a shortcut to the .EXE, and edit its properties: shortcut properties > Shortcut (Tab) > Advanced (button) > Run with different credentials. For the other 2 queries, do a "Run As" on control.exe (in C:\WINDOWS\system32) and explorer.exe (in C:\WINDOWS) respectively. The hitch here is that both these are already initialised (being part of the windows GUI shell) and are invoked *ONLY* under the currently logged-on username. So, the simple answer is - no you can't run these as ADMIN from another user account under normal circumstances (a bit of workaround hacking will still facilitate what you want, but it is too long drawn-out to describe here).
  10. See here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?act=ST&f=88&t=14869 It has everything you want to know (or need to do). Although the topic heading says "RAID drivers" it is actually for SATA as well.
  11. Yup. No need for install-shield nonsense, just the standard "OEMpnpdriverspath" method which uses the inf. And this is true for the 30.xx series, 44.03 (which is given as example above), as well as the latest 56.72 drivers.
  12. This is not an "issue" at all. It is a known fact that any sensible BIOS will boot the first boot device (as specified in CMOS settings). Now, what happens is that the first time you boot, Windows (whether win95 or winXP or winPE) will make an entry in Hard-Disk's MBR to make it bootable. So, 1st time you boot-up win winPE iso, the vmware BIOS finds that the HDD's MBR is blank, and so attempts to boot from some other device (i.e., it manages to boot from your CD-iso image). Once winPE starts booting up, it initialises your (virtual) HDD's MBR and so it is no longer blank. The next time you boot-up, the vmware BIOS boots your HDD, but since the HDD has nothing on it even now, it just stops with a blank screen. This is a scenario that will get played out even on a real machine. The solution is simple - use the standard methods. Enter the BIOS while powering the VM on (press the F2 key), and from the "Boot" menu item set the CD-ROM to be first-boot device (highlight it and press the "+" key in NumPad).
  13. The same method should work for firefox/thunderbird as well, since it uses the same installer.
  14. well, I do know that when I used ultraiso to optimise my ISO9660 CDimage, it messed up the files a bit, and what wolfshade described in his first post happened to me (in vmware 4). Then, I did not get problems using either Nero6 or cdimage.exe to make the ISO.
  15. I am interested about this topic as well! Is there a way at all to do what Mr.J!M is asking? If IE6 SP1 could be slip-streamed into w2k SP4 somehow, it would be very helpful. It would save on the install-time, CD-space, and unattending head-aches.
  16. If you are going to use this on WinXP Pro, this is what you need to do: 1. go here : prathapml's tweaks 2. scroll down to tweak #17 (Pre-configure/automate your swap file) 3. Implement what is written there. The method described in the site mentioned above is far simpler than any mentioned here, and is portable everywhere.
  17. ShareAza is the best - stick with it. Upgrade to v2.0 of it, if you haven't already done so. It kicks a**, 'cos it supports many P2P networks. It supports Gnutella 1 & 2, eDonkey2000, BitTorrent, and is also a good download manager (for http/ftp files). And this is just the beginning.
  18. Thanx spad very useful - shall try it out now. I used to just copy the installed directory previously, but that way, I wouldn't get the registry entries. I suppose this way I can.
  19. Put this section in your winnt.sif (or unattend.txt): Note the ";" for the theme file (that is there to comment out that line).Change the path to the theme file you want to use, and remove the ";" to use it. We do not want to discuss circumventing anti-piracy measures on the board, do we?
  20. My fave has been opera right since the v5.12 days. Of course 7.5 is simply fantastic........
  21. Doesn't the XP plus pack use MSI installer? Just use the .msi switches. I install it like this : "Microsoft Plus! for Windows XP.msi /QB-!" i.e., the "/QB-!" switch.
  22. Hell, just pick-up your original winXP CD and use it to re-install. The fact that you mention that you don't have access to it gives reason for suspicion that something's wrong here (as gamehead felt too). Otherwise, just boot from your backup copy of the original CD and use your key (because, as I said, starting setup from within windows sometimes leads to the key not being accepted as valid). That's all there is to it - let's close the thread.
  23. @XtremeMAC 3 solutions to what you describe- a. upgrade to opera 7.5 (and) b. Install the Sun JVM 1.4.2 (and) c. allot more memory cache in opera's preferences (to prevent crashing when too many windows open).
  24. Dudes, the 1st thing that seems to occur to your minds is that he has tried to crack it in some way, and is now seeing the glorious "unpredictability" that it sometimes results in. Broaden your minds, it's not necessarily so. But then, if what radhus describes is due to attempting cracking or modifying the source, then let him know that he won't get any support here about that matter. If you own a licensed copy, hacking may not be such a big crime, if it is only done for educational purposes. Only thing to keep note of, is that secure your base (i.e., confirm that everything works fine) before you start to experiment with hacks.
  25. Hey, you criminal-minds! (just kidding, no offence meant). Please spare him. His problem looks to be real - I have the same too. The problem already is manifested - and on the path of trying to solve it, he tried editing setupp.ini and it still doesn't work. YOU GET IT? It was not like the problem started *AFTER* he edited setupp.ini. Now, let me describe the issue. I slipstreamed a Service Pack (1,1a,2rc1 doesn't matter which - they all give the same problem). Then unattended it - so far, so fine. Then, came the time to reduce the size of the existing files to be able to fit more onto the CD. So I deleted the winnt/9x upgrade folders, the LANG folder, etc. (basically all the junk that is not needed when you are simply going to boot from CD and start the install). Things seemed to be fine after that, until the day I started the setup from within windows, and found that it simply does not accept the key (legit, the same one that setup otherwise *DOES* accept in the GUI-setup mode after text-mode file-copy). GOT IT ? His seems to be a similar problem. @radhus I haven't found a solution to this, nor will I even bother to find the cause behind this irregularity. See my previous post in this topic (higher up on this page).
