  1. If it gives you only a 30 day limit, and asks for activation - then its retail.
  2. On XPhome, don't specify that component at all, that's all. Just for sake of comparison, this is my components list from XP home: [Components] Fax=off p2p=off chat=off upnp=off ; oobe=off ; paint=on ; icfv6=on msmsgs=on WMPOCM=off msnexplr=off OEAccess=off IEAccess=off ; WMAccess=off TerminalServer=off IndexSrv_System=off Games=on hearts=on spider=on Pinball=on freecell=on solitaire=on ZoneGames=on ; mswordpad=on minesweeper=onI have commented out the lines which I need and are on by default. And my components section works exactly as planned.
  3. Thanks for the info. Would be useful for me since I wanted to have gaim install silently. (currently I just copy over files directly, and install the GTK separately)
  4. Its not my guide, so I can't add to it. But yes, I can add the info as a forum post here. the protocol is located on your XP disk, at "CD-root\VALUEDD\MSFT\NET\NETBEUI\"
  5. One thing that you're forgetting with your idea of cloning an installed OS is the processor architectures. If the OS was installed on a pentium4, cloning it to a pentiumIII 700MHz will result in an un-bootable system. Similar is the case with multi/single processors, and hyper-threaded, etc. Reason is that the hardware abstraction layer is different with different underlying chips. Anyway, we have gone far from the original topic.
  6. Do you have a retail CD or a VLK ?
  7. lol, yeah wanted to see you
  8. @galvanocentric Yes, it is quite possible. But then, you'd need to boot into DOS-mode and you need so many changes to the CD-structure (whereas MS intends taking us in the opposite direction with longhorn's WinPE setup). I'd say the above method you described, would be a lot of effort in return for nothing. (more importantly, optimizing ISOs would be not possible with the above).
  9. Junk, most of the time. I haven't ever seen that folder being useful. On the contrary, it ends up having issues with anti-viruses (when files have a copy there) and eating up disk-space, so on....
  10. When installing a network between a Windows95/98/Me and a Windows XP system, just make sure that you configure both systems with all required components (same as for networking between Windows95/98/ME and Windows 2000, see also the Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q258717 ) 1) Common protocol: Either install on all system NetBEUI protocol or TCP/IP 2) Install File-and-Printer Sharing 3) make sure to be in the same workgroup 4) Make the resources available by Sharing disks/folders on Windows95/98/ME and by sharing disks/folders on Windows XP Home Edition / sharing disks/folders on Windows XP Prof. 5) If you used Windows XP professional, create a WindowsXP Username for the user working on the Windows95/98/ME system 6) Login on the Windows95/98/ME system on startup with the username and password defined in the step above, when connecting to Windows XP Professional 7) the Windows95 "Network Neighborhood" should allow you now to access the WindowsXP system and the Windows XP "My Network Places" / "Computers Near Me" access to the Windows Read this article in detail
  11. 1. Use EasyBoot - its able to easily load images of the sort you need, without giving head-aches. 2. Search this forum for "Acronis" - this topic has been covered lot of times. And follow the rules of the forum, while posting. Topics should be given relevant name, and multiple-posting across threads (for the same content) is not allowed. *3 topics merged
  12. So you mean to say that your file-types are having the wrong icon showing up. 1. Check that the file-associations are correctly setup. 2. If file associations is proper, then delete this file: C:\Documents and Settings\Vaidh\Local Settings\Application Data\IconCache.dbThat will clear the icon cache and re-build it at next boot. Do post back on whether the problem was solved or not.
  13. Take a look at your HOSTS file - looks like you've been ad-blocking. Or maybe ATT is doing it (that looks unlikely though).

  22. By itself the *ENTIRE* Windows XPSP2 install (including program files folder) does not cross 1.2 GB. But you should ensure that you have atleast 3 or 4 GB of free-space on the partition where you will install XP, to give breathing space for system restore, DLLcache, hibernate, swap-file. But you can delete these things after install is completed - to cut-down on disk-usage.
  23. 1337 Translation: leet Short for elite (31337), which is the UDP (User Datagram Port) used by a hacker group called the Dead Cow Cult. 1337 is simply a language of symbols that look similar to the english alphabet. Using this system, "L=S" L Replacing an english letter S Replacing a leetian symbol here is a list of the leetian characters. A=4 B=8 C=( D=|) E=3 F=ph G=6 H=|-| I=! J=_| K=|< L=1 M=/\/\ N=/\/ O=0 P=|> Q=0, R=|2,|- S=5 T=7 U=|_| V=\/ W=\/\/ X=>< Y=`/ Z=see Notice their similarities to the alphabet. "/\/" looks kind of like "N" and, "\/" looks kind of like "V." It's not too complicated - just about anyone can learn. Please use it wisely though, for its laughable when people substitute just simply english characters calling it leet. Maybe google will add it to their Translator in Language Settings... (use it to confuse old people ) e/\/_|0`/
