install_wim_tweak works for me again with build 7600 x64. Now trying to see if I can slim it down a bit more. Should be able to get the image below 1GB. I have removed a lot more from the image, also from winsxs-folder. just need to check remaining disabled Windows-features and files in program folder, see if I can remove those from winsxs as well. Probably somewhere during the weekend, I will post my results and files. I will remove Windows features IE8 (IE-Troubleshooting, InternetExplorer-Optioonal), Gadgets, DVD-Maker, Windows Gadgets, XPS-service, Internet Games and those redundant language files. Then I commit the image (*). Then run vLite removal-only, check with dism what components remain. Then I put the wim-file back (the 1 I had here: *), remove the components that were remaining, see if I can still select all components in vLite, perform removal once more, cleanup/delete files from image, run vLite dummy-removal to slim down image again. Somewhere along the way I would like to integrate my language pack, but unfortuantely, this is not available yet as far as I know.

same same j! hoping to get the wim down to 800mb! can the boot.wim be edited btw? It can be edited in the same way, but I think it is only worth it if you are close to fitting on a CD. p.s. above is x64.

I am at 1.03GB/3.25GB currently. When I would remove the Backup folder, then I would probably get close to 1.0/3.0GB. However I am still not convinced that folder can be removed, I am still cautious on removing anything but drivers from winsxs.

I might have forgotten to mention it this 1 time, but I have x64 and with this I can not get install wim tweak to work. In order to install other editions, remove ei.cfg from the sources directory. See the above post on how to mount a specific edition (or use: imagex /list sources\install.wim). Also perform cleanups after vLite-removal. It gives a smaller image and installation (just a dozen of files for me, but still: smaller).

The install wim tweak tool does not work for me anymore since build 7264. I also do not think I need it that much... First I install Home Premium, for IE, DVD Maker and Windows Gadgets removal with Windows Features and language pack integration (at OOBE stage ctrl+shift+F3). This installation I generalize and create an image from. Then I remove the few packages that I can (the language related stuff: GB, US, ZA, etc.) with dism, run vLite, cleanup and finally vLite again for a reducing the image-file size because of the cleanup. Just Windows Firewall and ICS that keep me bugging (instllation fails) and Snipping tool, Welcome Center and TPM Based Service that re-appear in vLite. For IE: when I remove IE with Windows features and remove the directory from ProgramFiles and ProgramFiles(x96) with the cleanup, then near everything of IE is gone.

@underxp: in your preset I saw WLAN Suppport removed. I also have WLAN and need to keep this component, EAP and Network and Sharing Center.
-
Really strange: even if I only mount the image (image 2), run install wim tweak, commit the image and then install the appropriate version (Home Premium), then I get a blue screen upon windows 1st boot.

I am having serious issues with using the install wim tweak on build 7264 (x64). It seems to corrupt the image or something. When I only run the tool and commit tge image, then the installation fails (roll-back). When I first install (exit at OOBE), create an image from it and run the tool, then the intall wim tweak fails on pending packages. Is there maybe a newer version of this tool or has anybody else encountered these issues?

For build 7232 beside the preset I added the following. Please note, that the removal part is mandatory to be able to have a proper image/installation. As dead0 pointed out he needed to remove some packages in order to remove Game Explorer (and have a sduccesful installation). Packages.zip contains an Excel-sheet with a combinatins of tests that I made (with data from dea0 as well). Removal.zip contains removal.bat that requires 1 parameter, without a parameter it just initialises some environment variable you could use: packages - Remove packages cleanup - Remove redundant files and drivers langpack - EXAMPLE on how to integrate a language pack - integrate a languagepack (langpack) - remove obsolete packages (packages) - run vLite to integrate drivers, remove components and add tweaks - remove drivers and files (cleanup) - run vLite component removal without anything selected to reduce the image-file a but more I did not need to take ownership of these files for any test that I have made. You can do it with: takeown /f %mount%\Windows\..." /R icacls "%mount%\Windows\..." /grant Administrator:F /T /Q Also been busy testing build 7264, but there are no packages removable there. Just some language-related packages.

Do not display messages to screen (only errrors). As with >/dev/null on Linux.
-
Mepty file can be removed, forgot which option it is. Add/remove is known to not work upon removal of Help (Windows Search and Fax support also reported as dependant for Windows features to work).
-
Please search the recent topic: unattended does not work for W7 and several others have stated that W7 WAIK beta does not work for them in combination with "vLite'ing" (amongst others: imagex takes way too long).

I remove only drivers from winsxs and all other related folders (with help/info from dead0 ), I do not need to nullify those I think. I did check with the tool underxp specified which folders are biggest. For the drivers I removed all folders of over 2MB that I do not need (I have an Atheros WLAN card, that is the only driver I kept).

Ok, here the preset I am using. You have to understand the batch-file included (rename it to removal.bat). There are some comments, but you must know what you are doing. Use parameter all (removal.bat all) for removal of packages and cleanup, parameter packages (removal.bat packages) just for for package removal and cleanup (removal.bat cleanup) for just the cleanup. You also need the install_wim tweak and correct the paths in the batch file to fit your needs. I could try and remove ICS and Windows Firewall, but I doubt that will work (maybe I will give it another try). I was able to remove Internet Explorer and keep Firefox plugin IE tab working. However I think this is the limit for now (install.wim 1.02GB, Windows-drive 3.25GB excluding page-/hibernate-file) and I am happy with it. Just need to see that everything functions as it should, as I have not yet done extensive testing. For safe removal you need to perform the following command after installation: regsvr32 /s "%SystemRoot%\system32\ieproxy.dll"
-
Yeez I finally figured out which component Safe removal required... "%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\ieproxy.dll" I can not believe I did not think of that earlier, it is so obvious (dropping the sarcasm). When I move it to system32 and register it, then it also works. Just want to see if I can drop Windows Connect Now as well. After that 1 final test and I will post the details.
-
See the Windows 7 & vlite topic. Been busy with 3 others or so. I am getting x64 down to 3.25GB. Only ICS, Windows Firewall and IE are troublesome components where "vLite screws-up" the installation.

Windows Image Viewer is broken by dism-removal. Since I use IrfanView, I decided to drop Windows Image Viewer and WCS/ICM. EAP was breaking manual WLAN-connection set-up. Somewhere on this forum, someone one stated that it was not required, so wrong he was. I need to test 1 thing, because manual removal from wim-file causes safe removal to break. When I have worked that out, then I will post my final prest and removal-batch. I am coming close to install.wim of 1.02GB and installation 3.25GB (no swap-/hibernate-file). Can not be removed (installation errors): Internet Explorer, Windows Firewall, Internet Connection Sharing Can be removed (reduced functionality): WLAN Support + Network and Sharing Center + EAP (no manual set-up of WLAN possible) Windows Connect Now (safe removal gone) Windows Image Acquisition (required for Webcam) Microsoft HTML Engine (Required for Firefox plugin IEtab) Can be removed (but keep re-appearing): Welcome Center, TBM Can be removed (no issues): Game Explorer, Snipping tool, Application Experience Untested (excludign the obvious components): Multimedia Class Scheduler (Still not sure if it is required) MDAC (caused serious issues in previous build/RC) Task Scheduler (Issues with event-sounds and Avast virus scanner, keeping it) Windows Event Log (would like to see errors while testing)
-
Thanks, I need to recheck some things: Removal drivers after removal packages (otherwise package-removal fails) QoS kept, still no manual WLAN (I overlooked something) Windows Image Viewer does not work
-
I finally had some luck: updated my preset 4 amd removal_bat.txt. I can add the comments to the opening post of liquid0624 for build 7232 x64... Can not be removed (installation errors): Internet Explorer, Windows Firewall, Internet Connection Sharing Can be removed (reduced functionality): Quality of Service (no manual set-up of WLAN possible), Windows Connect Now (safe removal gone) Can be removed (but keep re-appearing): Welcome Center, TBM Can be removed (no issues): Game Explorer, ,Snipping Tool, Application Experience Untested: Windows Image Acquisition (required for Webcam) WLAN Support (I have WLAN) Network and Sharing Center (previous build/RC caused issues with WLAN configuration) Multimedia Class Scheduler Background Intelligent Transfer (I use Windows update) Windows Update (I use Windows update) Component Cache (Tricky, see removal_bat.txt) Manual Install (I use this for testing purposes) Microsoft HTML Engine (Required for Firefox plugin IEtab) MDAC (caused serious issues in previous build/RC) Superfetch (Still think it is useful) Task Scheduler (Issues with event-sounds and AVast virus scanner, keeping it) Windows Image Viewer (using it) WCS/ICM (dependancy with the above) Windows Event Log (would like to see errors while testing)

Windows Features depend on Help and maybe on Fax support and Windows Searchas well.
-
I do not have network shares, but maybe DFS, DLTC, DTC?

I am finally getting somewhere with 7232 x64. The preset of dead0 breaks WLAN for me (not able to manually connect to a network) and safe removal of USB-HD. The 1st might be QoS (or LLTD related), the 2nd might be related to Windows Connect Now. Still 16 components to test all Network/Services (want to keep Network and Sharing Center, BITS, Multimedia Class Scheduler, SuperFetch, Task Scheduler, WCS/ICM, Windows Event Log and Windows Update). edit: I just got lucky I think as I managed to remove half of the list in 1 turn and the key features that I noticed to break such as WLAN-networking and safe remova lstill work. I also tested WIndows update and only drivers were available, but installed without a hicup.

dead0, underxp or anyone else have more information on this. A log-file that is created, stating the package or file that is missing? which package or what error are you getting? ps heres my latest lastsession & batch file for x86: I am testing 7132 x64 and during installation I get an error concerning that there was a system file missing. But it does not specify which file. Now I am testing again with your protected files and it seems that those are indeed the cause. How did you find out that these files where the cause: windows\system32\SCardDlg.dll windows\system32\SystemPropertiesRemote.exe windows\SysWoW64\SystemPropertiesRemote.exe tbm.dll is easy, that is reported during installation, the above are not. How did you know?

Thanks I am testing build 7232 x64. I tried all kinds of combinations, but either my basic image is broke or vLite breaks the image after multiple runs (which it did not do before I started out with dism). Maybe I will try again in a day or 2, for now I am done.
