  1. It would be great to implement changes so that the latest version of Opera can be used on Windows 98, including fixes for opening links from external programs (which currently crash Opera).
  2. It can be used with my DLLHOOK redirector. Hello rloew, I e-mailed you a few weeks ago, but maybe you did not receive my message. I was wondering whether you plan further development of your DLLHOOK software, for example to add new functions or to maintain compatibility with newer versions of KernelEx. Also, is there a listing of software possible to run on Windows 98 (SE) using DLLHOOK? Thanks!
  3. Hi everyone, the newest version of sumatrapdf (2.0.1) no longer works with KernelEx. The error given is the following: "The LIBMUPDF.DLL file is linked to the missing export NTDLL.DLL:vsprintf."
  4. With the latest version of Flash Player (11.2.), the installer gives the following error: "...missing export ADVAPI32.DLL:ChangeServiceConfig2W". The last version of Flash Player to work with KernelEx 4.5 is thus, for the time being, 11.1. Edit: Apologies, I just noticed there is a separate thread regarding this issue...
  5. Thanks for the replies. I checked jumpers, tried various combinations of the drives in different IDE channels, none of which helped... finally I found out that even logging off and back on is enough to get the drive going... then I realized that some time ago I had put Nero Drivespeed to load at startup, with the aim to automatically reduce the reading speed (and thus the noise) of the CD mechanism. Removing Drivespeed from loading at startup fixed my problem.
  6. Hi all, I have the following problem under Windows XP SP3. I have two optical drives - one DVD drive (Teac DV-516E) and one CD-RW drive (Teac CD-W522E). The problem affects each of the drives independently. Assume I start the computer with the given CD drive empty. If i insert a CD, Windows will not detect it and will say "Please insert a disk into drive..." upon double-clicking the drive in My Computer. However, if I restart the computer and leave the CD inside, Windows will read the CD upon restarting. Also, I can then change the CD and Windows will again read it normally. Or in other words, if I start the computer with the given drive empty, I cannot use it - I must start with a disc inside in order to be able to use the drive. I thought this might be a hardware problem. Since I have a dual boot set up on this machine with Windows 98 (which I now use sparingly), I tested under Windows 98 and the drives works normally there. Any suggestions?
  7. Thanks, Xeno, for the updated version! Unfortunately the problem with opening links or .htm files in Opera still remains (see for example my post #1332). Hopefully it will be possible to fix it soon.
  8. Also, does the Windows Media Player plugin work for anyone in Opera 11.x? On my machine, it works OK until Opera 9.64. With Opera 10.x, it only worked sporadically, now it doesn't seem to work at all. I have the plugin detected and enabled, but videos won't play (nothing happens).
  9. I just tested with versions 11.11, 11.01 and 11.00 - the problem with opening links from external programs or trying to launch a new instance of Opera are the same. I wonder if there is anyone who could figure out how to fix it.
  10. Adding to the posts about Opera 11.5 and KernelEx. I just installed Opera 11.51 on my Windows 98 SE machine (manually via unpacking the installer contents.) Thus far, everything seems to work fine. The browser is very fast. However, there is a problem with: - opening http/https links from programs outside Opera (Outlook, notepad, etc.) - opening html files from Windows Explorer I have attached a screenshot of the illegal operation errer when opening a link from a plain text e-mail. After clicking Close, Opera still stays open, and it opens a new tab with a Google search with a strange mess of characters. A similar error occurs when launching a new instance of Opera while Opera is running. I am considering switching back to the previous version of Opera (10.63), since the problem with links is rather annoying (I often open links from my e-mail messages).
  11. Has anyone had success with running the latest version of Docx2Rtf under Windows 98? The previous version (3.8) worked fine without KernelEx. The current one gives me an illegal operation, even if used with KernelEx.
  12. Hi everyone, I am posting re: 82.69 display drivers and shutdown issues with certain cards. I recently bought a used nVidia Geforce 7600 GS (AGP 512 MB RAM) for a Pentium IV - based machine at home. I successfully got the card to work with the 82.69 drivers. How ever, I did begin experiencing problems with shutdown - sometimes the computer hangs, sometimes it displays "It is now safe to turn off your computer" (with the previous card and drivers, it turned off automatically), where it also sort of hangs, because I have to hold the power button for a while for the machine to turn off. I tried rloew's suggestion from post #294, i.e. replacing four specific files with the 77.72 versions. However, this lead to a problem with the display driver in the device manager and I was only able to use 16 colors. Does anyone have a suggestion how to fix teh shutdown problem? Should I try to uninstall 82.69 and install the complete 77.72 driver?
  13. Unfortunately, utorrent just dropped support for all Win 9x. Up to now, this tiny, fast and useful torrent program supported even Windows 98. I wonder what led the developers to drop support. Last version to work is 1.8.5 (build 17091). Current version, which no longer works, is 1.8.5 (build 17414).
  14. As has been mentioned in another thread, it seems that no new Windows 98 versions of Media Player Classic will be compiled. See here for more info: http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thr...forum_id=735607 The author of the software updates suggest that if you want to have new Win98 versions, you have to compile them yourself. Anyone up for the task?
  15. I have tried the new Java installer, version 6u10. Whereas before (versions 6u6 and 6u7) one could overcome the installer problems and use the .msi file to install Java, now it seems impossible. Upon running jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe, a directory is created under R%\Application Data\Sun\Java\jre1.6.0_10, with two files: Data1.cab jre1.6.0_10.msi The .cab file contains all or most of the actual files to be extracted and installed (under "core.zip"). However, the .msi file pops with Error 1721. Thus, it seems the only way to install would now be to manually extract files? Would it be so hard for Sun to make the installation process Win98-friendly, seeing as Java 6u10 itself should still work on Windows 98?
  16. Based on dependency walker, the following files/functions seem to be missing:- APPHELP.DLL - USERENV.DLL - OLE32.DLL: CoWaitForMultipleHandles - SHELL32.DLL: SHBindToParent However, strange, the same files/functions are listed for jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe, i.e. the previous update, where the installer proceeds fine and does not give Error 1723.
  17. Thanks guys. I was able to install JRE 6.0 u7 with these instructions. However, the installer (.exe file) doesn't work even if Microsoft .NET Framework is present - I have one machine with .NET 1.1, another machine with .NET 2.0, in both cases the install does not work, I had to use the .msi file.
  18. The file I can download from Java's website is "jre-6u7-windows-i586-p-s.exe". I can open it as an archive with 7-zip, however, when extracting I get an error message that the files inside are broken. Thanks.
  19. Hi, I have no particular reason... I have two Win98 machines here at home, on one of them I use v5, on the other one I have been using v6 up until Update 6, when the installation stopped working. It's always nice to know that you can use the most recent version, even if an older version is also still supported. The statement from Java has been that v6 is not tested on Windows 98, but they did not do anything to break compatibility, so it should work. However, they have obviously not been careful enough and have made the installer incompatible.
  20. Thanks for the information. Could you point me to the thread where this has been discussed? I could not find it... Also, shouldn't Java fix their installer? To me, breaking Win9x compatibility in this way seems rather unprofessional. For me, it's not a problem to "bypass" the installer, but what about other users? I will try to contact Java with this issue.
  21. Hi all, has anoyone had success installing the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (6.0 update 7) on Windows 98? Versions up until 6.0 U5 worked fine, but the latest versions report that a DLL is missing and the installation process cannot continue. I suspect that it is only a problem with the installer and that Java itself should still work on Win98. Should we notify someone over at Java to fix the installer? Also, is it now definite that Ad-aware definition files will no longer work on Windows 98?
  22. Hi Juergen, try to go to the registry (Start -> Run: regedit), find and delete all entries containing "VID_0781&PID_6100". Then, restart your computer and try plugging in the Ultra SD card again.
  23. Hi all, my older USB external hard disk is dying and I need to buy a new one to back up my data. The drive that I have now uses the standard USB mass storage driver (geneuide.inf). I am using Windows 98 SE. I am thinking about buying a 250GB or 320 GB drive, but all the major manufacturers (WD, Maxtor, Toshiba, etc.) don't list Windows 98 (SE) as a supported system. My question is: Do you think that it will be possible to use for example the WD "My Passport" with Win 98? Will I need to install the Maximus Decim USB drivers? Or perhaps I could use the Wintricks generic USB driver? http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/...asp?DriveID=391 I have also found a manufacturer that does support Windows 98, however their drives on the internet are somewhat more expensive: http://www.cavalrystorage.com/handheld.asp Thanks for any advice.
  24. Hi BenoitRen, any progress on your end? We are probably nearing Gecko 1.9 Beta stage soon, and the more delay, the less of a chance that Mozilla folks will provide help (at least that's my fear).
  25. Hi BenoitRen!It would be great if you could get through the initial phase of the project (i.e. document what exactly needs to be done and hopefully start up a devoted page on www.mozilla.org) while Firefox 3 is still in Alpha stage. Of course nobody can "demand" anything from you, seeing as you are the only one who has voluntarily shown some initiative regarding this issue.
