  1. If the partition's actual contents are intact but the partition table is corrupted, it'll be a very easy fix. I've obtained used drives that the owner had "deleted" the information from by just "deleting" the partition (removing the entry from the partition table). The entire partition can be restored in a few minutes. Use a disk editor to search for the first occurrence of the string FAT32 over all sectors. Likely the first result you get will be the superblock for the partition. Note the sector offset. Now go back to the partition table and fill in the first entry with this sector offset, also you can get a rough calculation of the size and fill that in too. Set the partition as active and try reading from it again. (Do NOT attempt to write to it). If that doesn't work, maybe you didn't find the real superblock. Repeat the search/edit process until you do. Reference to the format of partition table entries: http://www.datarescue.com/laboratory/partition.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_Boot_Record
  2. Look in the unattended installs forum for detailed information on how to remove the preset installation destination from an OEM disk.
  3. Acid2? So what? That's totally different from his problem here. Acid2 is just to see if the browser conforms to standards. Not whether scrolling will cause a problem. I've seen similar display bugs with other programs and it is definitely bug in the rendering engine, it's not refreshing often enough or the refresh is somehow inhibited.
  4. Delete its registry entries, or if there is a config file in the directory delete that.
  5. I don't think this is a good idea, just like with the Enable48BitLBA - who would want to remove 2GB+ and Enable48BitLBA support anyway?
  6. Do note that those "500W" power supplies that are much cheaper than comparable 500 watt units from reputable manufacturers like Antec or Enermax do not actually have 500 watts of continuous power available. Maybe 300 - 350 at most. Running a PSU well below its output limit extends its lifetime. I'd get the most powerful PSU you can afford. Here's an interesting mobo to consider: http://www.asrock.com/product/ConRoe865PE.htm Supports the newest processors from Intel, based on the old reliable 865 chipset. Should also support Win98SE 100% Other than that, I'd recommend the Asus P5P800SE which is similar but more expensive (Asus quality?)
  7. So MSN Messenger doesn't work on 98SE?
  8. Just the hard drive, or the machine reboots? You might want to disabled "Restart automatically on error" option since that might be a BSOD.
  9. I'd be willing to bet that had you left your install alone as a normal Windows XP install, you wouldn't be having these issues. You disabled or removed a needed service, you can't figure out why, and now you're blaming the OS for your mistakes. If people would just leave Windows XP's services alone and not try to "tweak" them, they wouldn't have any issues with their software or hardware. That has absolutely nothing to do with it! The manufacturer's drivers and program work better, as I would expect it to. Just think about how Windows, with its generic wireless configuration utility, can handle all wireless adapters equally well? It can't. That's why manufacturers provide their own configuration utility.
  10. Leave the other subkeys alone... When you mentioned that it only occurred when moving items over other icons, this is a big hint - does it happen only with certain file types dragged on top of others, or do all icons dragged over other icons do the same thing? In the registry also contains information about something called DragDropHandlers, which implies exactly what the name says - provides functionality for drag and drop operations. One or more of those could be malfunctioning.

Looks like a possible variant of Backdoor-CEX: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_125317.htm HiJackThis log please? It's probably disguised as some legitimate process name.
  12. Ghost has an "exact" bit-for-bit copying mode. Try that. In "normal" mode Ghost doesn't actually do a proper image - it just takes the essentials of the filesystem, compresses those sectors, and puts those in the "image" instead.
  13. .dat looks like a manufacturer-proprietary image format. What make/model of camera is it?
  14. HiJackThis is definitely recommended. If it's something starting from a Run entry, it'll show it.
  15. Bug in the rendering engine. Most definitely not the graphics driver (unless corrupted), since the 810E has been around for a LONG time and the drivers are stable.
  16. Use something like Gspot to identify what codec the file you're trying to open is encoded with, then find and install that codec (from the Internet).
  17. FDISK won't let you do it, but you can create more than one primary partition and boot from any of them.
  18. The situation is not much better even with genuine batteries
  19. 1. That's a bad idea. Windows directory needs to be accessible from DOS, and so should conform to 8.3 naming convention.2. Is the BIOS booting the C drive or the D drive, i.e. where is the kernel (MSDOS.SYS and IO.SYS) stored? The autoexec.bat and config.sys are located on the same drive that the DOS kernel is.
  20. Those are the ones that you don't need to use their own software since it's huge (50Mb!) and Windows built-in software works fine with it. That's what I use on my laptop. But for some reason my NETGEAR adapter in the other machine can't seem to find networks correctly nor connect all the time if I use wzcsvc.
  21. That's supposed to be normal. I just tried moving some icons around with Regmon running and it reported the same DHCP activity. My DHCP client is enabled, though. The only other possibility I can think of is your processor is overheating and slowing down... what sort of temperatures are you experiencing?
  22. A file is being replaced on the first boot and subsequently remains. Have you checked Windows System File Protection as the cause? Here's mine, lol Edit: Just noticed you lost approximately 200MB of RAM after the first boot
  23. That'll shorten the life of that drive quite a bit, NTFS performs more writes (and reads) than FAT32 and flash memory already has a significantly shorter lifespan than other magnetic storage.FAT32 - simple file system with little features, but works fine for basic file storage. NTFS - complex file system with many features, useful for multiuser/server environments.

    What's in it?
  25. ...and you owe them money for their "intellectual property", so in the end it balances out and software shouldn't be that expensive?
