  1. I understand streaching things out. I have 2 "servers" that are dual 933 and 1.0gig respectively, running server 2ks with no probs. 9x was never meant to be an OS that would take advantage of multiple processors, as it was marketed to consumers primarily. And if you are looking at going to Win2k, better hurry. I know Micro$oft is pulling Windows NT, 2k and 1 or 2 other things from MSDN subscribers, so I would imagine that the same will apply to the retail outlets. Best of luck to you and your endeavors!
  2. Hmmm... I believe it to be highly unlikely, as all of the 9x series of OS's had no built-in support for dual procs. And I really can't see someone attempting to reverse engineer the code to make an os that is in the sunset of its life support dual procs. Better off just upgrading to 2k or XP.
  3. Does anyone here remember the old DOS x.xx mutli-boots menus?? You had to configure your autoexec.bat and config.sys with different headers for it to work. Would anyone happen to have any docs or pdf's (hopefully that wouldn't be considered warez) that they could share with me?? I've trolled Google, and so far no luck finding all the info I need. Looking primarily for all the variables that are allowed in the two files. Thanks in advance!
  4. The retail version of Norton AV is "bloatware". The corporate versions of Symantec Antivirus generally are not, and work a lot better in my opinion that the retail Norton series. I use the x32 and x64 versions of Symantec Corporate (thanks to my wonderful employer) and haven't had any problems (to date).
  5. Regardless, the pilots should have known better than to even attempt a landing in that kind of weather. They should have either continued circling or diverted to another nearby airport rather than take the risk they did. I'd hate to be the one to do the bag claims on all the luggage/cargo that got f**ked up!!
  6. Any thoughts on making it easier to select a UNC network share as the install point for app?? I've tried setting it up for this. As long as I manually edit the config.js and place \\\\\\ in front of the server name, it works. If I got back into WPI and attempt to save a new program install, all the previous installations fail and show where they were trying to run from \servername\share\appfolder\app.exe. Aside from this little problem, this **** proggie rocks!! Thanks for all the hard work on it. You have made my life easier for certain!
  7. I found the prior thread on this as well, but whenever i go to save a new program with \\servername\share\folder\app.exe, it loses a "\" in the UNC definition after you select to install the app(s). i can manually do a find and replace in the config.js file to reflect \\\\\\servername\share\......, but when i save the config.js, relaunch the wpi.cmd, add a new program, and then save, it reverts back to \\\\servername\share\......., and gives me just "\servername\share\....." during the app installation. any ideas on what i may be doing wrong. also, i get the error "Windows cannot find '<Drive Letter>:\Windows'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, yada yada yada". is there a file somewhere i can change or remove this check?? thanks in advance.
  8. Hey, don't know if its been mentioned or not, but how about adding Windows Server 2003 to this list???
  9. Hehehe.. You forget, that falls under the realm of "Things That Make Sense But Are Never Implemented".
  10. Well, if your 2k box is 2K Server, you can configure RIS (Remote Installation Services) and make riprep images of each unique box and store them on the server. The, if a system dies, you simply boot from a PXE compliant nic or a RIS boot floppy and restore the image onto the system. Check out this page for more info on RIS: http://labmice.techtarget.com/windows2000/install/RIS.htm http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techi...remotesteps.asp The same info for 2k also applies for 2k3. You will need to have some understanding on setting up DNS, DHCP, and I believe WINS. The other alternative would be to have a copy of Symantec Ghost handy and create ghost images of all your machines and store them on the server or a removeable drive. Again, system dies, and restore from ghost image. Check out Symantec's web site for more info on that. Hope this helps.
  11. No prob, julie. I guess the lesson to be learned here is to make certain to dumb down yer question so as to not be accused of being in possession of questionable software. Anyway, sorry about all the static you got initially from the wording of yer question.
  12. Yea, like <Spartacus> said, it is a matter of terminoligy, julie. Check out my post that got killed in the XP64 forum. Some people seem feveriously gung ho with accusing you of having a warezed copy of whatever, but thankfully not everyone here is like that. The information that everyone here looks and asks for works on just about every version, VLK, OEM, Retail, and Warezed.
  13. Dude, did you fall asleep in English?? I got a headache reading yer post. Whatever happened to complete sentences?? And now, for something completely different..... It may also be possible that since she works for XYZ company that XYZ company has a Volume Licence Agreement with the MicroBorg Empire. Part of that agreement, if its like ours, allows current employees to use 1 copy of the VLK version of XP, Office, ect. on their home pc's. So, the correct answer to this question would be for you to contact your it department at XYZ Inc. and ask them the specifics of the XP cd in your posession. And on the topic of Porsche's, I race my virtual one every time I load up Need for Speed.....
  14. Yes Version 10 of SAV does work on Xp 64-bit you'd have to install it from the SAVWin64 folder of the CD. Hope that helps, I've been using it on my copy of XP X64 <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yea, I had tried SAV v9.x, but it crapped out during the install saying that it was not being installed on a x64 platform.
  15. Avast!!! Symantec Antivirus Corporate v10.x works like a champ. Just a little FYI.
  16. I assume that yer current drive is out of warranty?? If it isn't, you could call up Seagate and request an advanced RMA from them. They will ship you out the replacement drive, and then you ship them the bad drive back in the same box. You could swap out logic boards from the new to old long enough to recover data, and then ship back the bad. Only problem is they will want to have a credit card to guarentee that you will ship back the defective drive. Good luck..
  17. Does anyone know if the Symantec 9.x or 10.x 64-bit AV client work under XP x64??
  18. If you downloaded the iso from Micro$oft, you should have received an email with the key. If not, fill out the form again and request another download. I thought I had the same problem after I downloaded my beta iso, but it turned out that my spam filter ate it for some odd reason.
  19. Unless the game in question supports running on multiple monitors (i.e. - Flight Simulator 2004), chances are you can't make it work. I have a dual setup myself (nVidia 4600 VGA/DVI running to 19" and 21" monitors). The problems I have run into is that the game in question will run on only 1 monitor. And depending on the game in question, moving the mouse into the area defined by the secondary monitor will result to dropping you back to the desktop if you click there. For some games you can alt-tab back into the game. Others will act p***y and fail to work, so you'll have to end task and restart (hope you saved before hand). Unless there is a third-party app out there that will get the job done, methinks you are SOL like myself. Hope it helps.
  20. Yea, it does query the bios. But even if you were to figure out how to install it on another non-Dell pc, there is still the question of your OEM key that probably needs to be activated. I believe that you can purchase just the licence w/o software from Micro$oft, but I'm not sure how much it would set you back. True, this was due to the number of people back in the days of 9x that were taking the original 9x cd and product key and installing it on x number of pcs. Ah, days gone by.......
  21. They are tormenting you because you are impatient.
  22. What are the properties of the file, specifically, who made it and such. To me, it does sound like spyware. What is the date of the file, and are there any other files with similar dates?? Also, check and see if it is currently running as a process. If you have a bunch other files with similar 7-8 characted garbled names running, you got spyware/malware running. Are there a bunch of similar files in the registry under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and RunOnce. The only way I have had 100% success in getting rid of that crap is to boot off of something like a Bart PE or ERD Commander 200x cd and manually nuke the files from windows and the registry. Good luck...
  23. Sweet. Glad you were able to get it up and running.....
  24. Does it require you to activate it?? If it does not, then its a VLM copy. If it does require activation, then its a retail or OEM copy. Below are examples of what the cd volume label looks like and what variant of XP you have, providing that the University has not changed it: CCP Compliance Checking Program (Upgrade Version) EVL Evaluation Version FPP Full Packaged Product (Retail Version) OEM Original Equipment Manufacturer RTM Release To Manufacturing SEL Select (License for 250 or more PCs) VLK Volume License (Product) Key VOL Volume (License) Language CD Description Volume Label English Windows XP Professional (SP2) Retail VRMPFPP_EN English Windows XP Professional (SP2) Upgrade VRMPCCP_EN English Windows XP Professional (SP2) OEM VRMPOEM_EN English Windows XP Professional (SP2) VLK/Corporate/Volume VRMPVOL_EN English Windows XP Professional (SP2) MSDN VRMPFPP_EN For the full listing of all cd labels, including 2k and server 2k3, check out this site: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=297 about half way down the page are the links to the cd volume labels. Hope this helps ya.
