  1. I've been testing the WebDAV problem I mentioned in the post above for 3 hours. I got other people, including the server administrators, to confirm that everything server-side was working as expected. None of these people used SHELL.DLL 4.72.3812.634, and none of them had problems using WebDAV. Similarly, I could retrieve other files on the server with no problem, so there were no network issues as such. I reverted back to 4.72.3812.620 and WebDAV began working again. So the WebDAV problem was definitely introduced by SHELL32.DLL 4.72.3812.634. MDGx, please inform the anonymous author.
  2. I've come across a potential problem with this latest update (build 4.72.3812.634). Ever since installing the update, I've been unable to connect to servers via WebDAV; either via native Windows WebDAV, or through the Novell Netdrive client (version 4.1.873). Netdrive uses its own WebDAV DLLs, but both use SHELL32.DLL. Could anyone else test this?

    VOIP

I'm looking for a freeware/open source VOIP application for Windows 9x/98x that preferably can use: - the open source Speex codec - any SIP (standard VOIP protocol) provider It would be nice if it could call land-line phones, too. Recently I had Skype 2.5.0.141 installed and working (voice, didn't use video) without noticeable problems on Windows 98 SE (even though it is not supported, and hasn't been since version 1.3, I think). I tried installing a beta of Skype 3.0, but alas it wouldn't install. Is anyone using Skype 3.0 on Windows 9x? By the way, Skype doesn't use the Speex codec. It uses iLBC. From what I read, iLBC is considered to be inferior to Speex (especially on lower bandwidth connections). Has anyone tried to get Skype to use Speex instead of iLBC?
  4. OMEGADRIVE here! These are my "optimized" drivers for the NVIDIA family of video cards/laptops. What's New? (2k/XP 1.6177) I'm not sure that I understand. Are you recommending tweaked Windows 2k/XP Omega drivers for Windows 9x? If so, can you provide a link please?
  5. Thought I'd use this topic to mention a supposed future update to version 6.0x of Adobe Reader/Acrobat, after the recent discovery of 'critical' vulnerabilities in versions 7.08 and below: "... available in the near future". Now where have I heard that before.
  6. Cheers MDGx for the explanation. Got the updated file now. I'll download the rest of today's updates again too, just in case. Thanks again, all the best.
  7. Thanks MDGx and anonymous author for this latest version. I've just downloaded the fix and unpacked SHELL32.DLL and it still shows version 4.72.3812.620, not .634 (and is timestamped October 30 2006). Is this correct - did the author not actually update the build/date in this latest release? Just trying to clear up any confusion.
  8. I thought Win9x already supported this as long as it was a proper win32 application. No, please don't insert that s*** into Win9x! It only leads to headaches and more complexity. I hear you, BenoitRen, and I kind of agree. Moreoever, I guess, it would be to make 9x something that it's just not. Retreating back from that (sort of), some better password protection at boot time would be good (although again, I'm really not sure how this could be achieved, since such measures are always easily bypassed through DOS). Windows 9x remains totally insecure at the (physical) point of access. I don't think I'd ever run 9x on a laptop, for example.
  9. Hi MDGx, Regarding the True Type Font Pack, I've read that a recent Microsoft Office 2007 Compatibility Pack includes some Vista fonts . Would it be possible to include these in a future version of TTFPAK? Season's Greetings to one and all.
  10. - Better GDI resources (e.g., 32- rather than 16-bit - I think; there's an interesting thread somewhere here on the forum that explains the issue). - The ability to support the Cairo graphics library (a GDI replacement, used by Firefox 3 that, amongst other things, provides far better font-rendering in web pages). - Cleartype, or some such advanced font-rendering technology. - IE7 - it will never happen, I know this (I much prefer Firefox and Opera, but IE7 on Windows 9x would be handy to me). - Better Unicode support (seconding noguru's suggestion above). - Better security regarding file permissions (seconding jimmsta's suggestion above), although I can't see this happening at all.
  11. Before I consider it, could you tell me anything about its compatibility (potential or otherwise) with Windows 9x?
  12. If this project is a success, I'll be so grateful. I tried downloading Autopatcher v1.5. I have a dial-up connection, so you'll appreciate that it's rather a big download (not complaining, by the way). However, my ISP cuts my connection every two hours, so so the ability to resume downloads is essential to me. Unfortunately, the server you uploaded Autopatcher to doesn't allow the resumption of partial downloads. The 30-40 MB I did manage to download were of course completely useless to me and I had to give up. Next time, if you can, please upload the Autopatcher to a server that allows download-resumption. Thanks for your persistence with the project.
  13. Really excellent stuff, thanks for all your work Petr.
  14. Hi Petr. The southbridge in my Gigabyte board is VT8237, and the patch worked for me. Until I applied one of the registry tweaks included with the patch, the system would freeze quite often when closing or opening apps. After applying the reg tweak, everything was fine. So, it may be worth a try.
  15. I've had exactly the same MSGSRV32 problem with the WDM Realtek audio driver for onboard sound on a VIA-based Gigabyte board. Windows (or Explorer) fails to start on bootup. I wasn't able to solve them, after having tried many different versions of the AC97 audio driver (the version linked to from the Gigabyte site didn't work for me. In fact, I think it was incorrect for my particular Realtek codec). Eventually, I used the Vinyl Audio VIA driver too. And it worked for me too (although it seemed that any audio device that needed even slightly intensive CPU usage would cough and splutter, and sometimes even stop dead. There were other peculiarities that I can't remember exactly). Regarding slowness, I have experienced that too. But I found that George Breese's PCI Latency Patch (and the registry tweaks he supplies) and his Memory Interleaver had a significant effect in speeding things up. Apparently, many VIA BIOSes do not offer the ability to turn on the memory interleaving feature. In spite of these problems, the board was/is generally stable. Hope this can help a bit.
  16. What I need I'm afraid is a step by step guide, in which all concepts are explained - in other words, assuming no prior knowledge (of DOS and configuration files). I want: 1. Do this using this (which is this) 2. Then do this (this means this - it is just a kind of that) 3...... Etcetera. Step. By. Step. Please. By the way, if PROBLEMCHYLD and I can't get our heads around it, then probably others can't, too. Perhaps you're not worthy of using it if you can't understand it Perhaps you're not worthy of driving your car if you can't understand and make functional yourself, through your understanding, its engine. Likewise, perhaps you should only be allowed to benefit from water on tap, and public sanitation, if you understand the various plumbing and filtering systems involved. And perhaps then, LLXX, you should restrict the download and use of your > 137GB LBA fix to only those who pass a test showing their understanding of LBA. But where would the glory and acclaim be in that, eh?

  18. I have to admit, I don't understand the documentation either (and I've read it more than twice). Why? Because knowledge of several of the things/concepts/features mentioned is taken for granted. Ideally, all these things would be explained without introducing yet more terms that require explanation to the beginner. I can see that the author has tried hard, but the documentation still assumes a fair amount of prior knowledge in the user.
  19. But some people may want and/or need it, PROBLEMCHYLD. It is an update to a component of Windows 98 SE (yes, it's an optional component; but it's a component available to users on the setup disk, who may have chosen a full installation). Come on, think about other users here.
  20. The disappointing thing about this add-on is that it installs a TSR. Does anyone know if it's possible for Winfile to support LFNs without having to load this TSR?
  21. You're quite right erpdude. I have MSHTML.DLL 6.00.2800.1556 (but only SHDOCLC.DLL 6.00.2800.1106). This is preventing the installation of the newer SHDOCLC.DLL. Thanks for prompting me to look at the patch more closely. I agree that the patch should be renamed, for clarity's sake.
  22. Regarding the 834158 Web Page Print Errors SHDOCLC.DLL 6.00.2800.1443 Fix: I've tried installing it on two different 98 SE installations, both with IE6 SP1 installed, and have received this error message:
  23. Well, I do. I need to install IE7 for test purposes (web development). It would be sooo useful to me if I could use IE7 in my primary OS (98 SE). And yes, I realise that with the coming end of Mozilla's support for 9x, I will have finally to abandon my beloved 98 SE as the OS in which I develop. But I do still hold out some hope that people much more talented than I will be able to keep a Firefox branch for 9x alive.
  24. Yes, at least I tried to install it. Like I said, I got multiple "trouble copying a file" errors when I tried. Prior to this, the latest MDAC update I had installed was 911562 (specifically the version for 2.8 SP1, since I had previously installed MDAC 2.8 SP1).
