  1. First, remove WINNT.SIF and attach "Last Session.ini" - SEE RED AT TOP OF PAGE! Second, look here. Third, look at Screenshots here. Last, get the nLite Reference here (where you posted this).
  2. With all due respect, I have to agree with everyone else in that I view this topic as a "mixed bag". That being said, it appears to be more of a log of your experiences. Now to disagreement on the "security" subject... XP is perfectly capable of running FF and NoScript as well as a good AV. Even better is to install a "better" firewall, IOW, bi-directional, not just "in" as is with XP and is very much the same as a Router. It also can have a "restricted rights" User. From an Admin account, you can even block accesses to files/folders entirely. I myself have the above set up on my PC's, the exception being a Restricted User since I'm the only one. However, I did set up my daughter's PC for her children with all of the above. Conclusion - Win7x64 is no better in respect to WinXPx32 for the purposes of "security". Not to say Win7x64 is not better as far as security, just saying security can be accomplished with nearly any OS. And if you had a DSNChanger on it then you did get "caught" with the Trojan no matter how you word it. DCWG DSNChanger info just so you'll know the facts and fixes.
  3. How odd! Network Neighborhood is what I used. BUT I used MS Networking. Also (duh!) File and Printer Sharing, naturally (otherwise ->Win9x doesn't work) and Separate Users (naturally - MS Networking). Some setting I missed? No Vista/Win7 ATM, so can't fully retest. We'll keep "my" method "open" until I get a chance. UNLESS anyone else wants to do it. Otherwise, just use PROBLEMCHYLD's method.
  4. OK... I used AutoPatcher for my scenario, which undoubtedly(?) also has the necessary components that SESP has. Granted SESP goes beyond Autopatcher but I've been busy and haven't tested the latest SESP - the one I used was already in-place so...
  5. Not sure where it is, but Kel created an XP "Package" to do just that. It involved AFAICT, actually installing it, then "repackaging" it to force it to be "turned off". If this is for Windows 7, I will "assume" that the same method will work for it. You'll have to, of course, look at the "package" to see how it's done. Look here for latest "dual" J7U5. Modify accordingly?
  6. Huh! LmCompatibilityLevel LMCompatibility A little "combo" info and here. Maybe the method I used is the difference. I didn't do any of the other steps you provided, only what I posted, AFAICR. 98SE on VPC VM <-> Win7 Home Premium via the NIC's<->Router (DSCLIENT, as you said, is for accessing AD Domains) Oh well, whichever flies, proving it can be done, the main thing being you have to (generally) have matching setups (User+Pwd, Workgroup, TCP/IP, etc.) on both ends. Win9x<->Vista/Win7/Win8(?)/(+Server varieties)
  7. Just google MicroCenter - I gave a couple of links. They no longer carry it but others still do (also gave a link). You may or may not be able to find the MUI CD's anymore. Per the "differences" between what you purchased and the "Euro" version. Nope, the Euro version you reference is a Full (FPP) product, not "Generic OEM". Those are the specific files that are different and the label should/BETTER be GRTMPFPP_EN. As for all of the "magic/stupid" stuff you keep talking about - it's the New Way. If you want to change away from the Welcome screen to the Win2K way, that's doable. Nearly everything can be "reverted" to a Win2k "feel". The Install is what it is and can be "modified" to allow for "eliminating" your so-called "bubble gum" screens that happen during install (e.g. nLite/WINNT.SIF). And ANY "pop-up bubbles" in the task bar can also be "tweaked" away. You're making WAAAAAY too much of this.
  8. On NT system: * As UserAdmin, Define UserA with PwdA - log onto it once and log out (creates the Docs/Settings, etc) * As, UserAdmin, make a SHARE and set UserA as one of users to access with whatever "rights" On Win9x system * "Client for Microsoft Networks" MUST be installed (in Control Panel->Network) * AND used as "Primary Network Logon" * AND UserA/PwdA as a User (Somewhere) there will be a WorkGroup name - make sure they are the same. Also make sure the two connected PC's have the same Subnet defined AND that "auto detect" is set for IP so that the connections will "join" each other. On Win9x, reboot and sign in as UserA/PwdA - don't have that user signed onto the NT system (can't sign on TWICE onto same PC). EDIT! Post came afterward. Please let me know if what I posted matches what you did. It does work for me bi-directional.
  9. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116592 Post#3 - the OP states purchased in-box The topic here is how to "rip" the purchased to confirm (for some strange reason). I suppose that price could be a rip-off. Also see this post#17. Apparently Microcenter no longer has it in stock. Microsoft "How to tell" apparently no longer shows XP.
  10. No, sir, My test was done with Home OEM SP1a. Yes, it's a direct "copy" of an original because at the time a neighbor had that installed and had lost the CD. The original was legitimately purchased as well and the same problem occurred. Nero saving the TRACK works fine (no trailing hex-0's). I'll test another if you like with a different software. BTW, did you go read the link? edit - Nero "Save Track as ISO" - perfect... edit2 - MagicISO - perfect... The ImgBurn has a fallacy.
  11. Leading hex-0 is supposed to be there. Trailing hex-0 should not. The last thing that is valid will be "AutoCRC" plus 5-character-position hex-values. Hex-0's after that "don't count". ImgBurn incorrectly "rips" and leaves trailing hex-0's (just tested it). "AutoCRC" occurs in two places and the values don't match. Some info on AutoCRC and CRC32 here. I have no clue how AutoCRC works but it's placed into ISO's built with MS' CDIMAGE/OSCDIMG programs by using a parameter input. SO... I have no clue how you've obtained your other hash values that "check out". KB841290 contains FCIV, the "official" ("unsupported") SHA-1/MD5 program. As I said, HashMyFiles works fine also (gives many hashes).
  12. Unless your CD is properly "imaged" there's no way to be sure about SHA-1/MD5. If you "ISO-image" it you have to be sure that ALL trailing hex-0's are gone as they "throw it off" AFAICR, saving the Track in Nero would be good. Other CD tools also work (can't remember which) but it MUST be done as ISO or it won't be right. A Hex Editor would allow "deleting" those pesky trailing hex-0's. Hashmyfiles will provide them after PROPER ISO creation and then just search the internet to cross-check. I kind of doubt yours is "bogus" so you shouldn't worry about that as your description sounds legit.
  13. You have XP Pro "Generic" OEM, meaning that it's not "Manufacturer Specific" (not SLP/Preactivate). See this for more on that. If you need more info it can be given. See your other thread. Also see Wiki for features differences. edit - "XP HOME" Welcome Screen? It shouldn't be specifying AFAIK. What does the System Properties show? ??? AutoUpdates? "Not now" when you installed? ? It's not automatic. You have to JOIN a domain. See "System Properties" for "a bunch of stuff".edit2 - AHHH! (see below) never thought of that. Home doesn't supply that. (also you must have a bunch of uploads somewhere - delete unnecessary ones - look in your profile)
  14. Huh! (Win7 N) http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate/ Validate link - real cute! THIS... This thread is showing up in Google now.
  15. Or "Show" on Welcome (result should be the same)... [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList] "administrator"=dword:00000001Set to "0" for "Hide"... This is what I've been using. Don't screw with the other Special Accounts. "Autologon" for it is a different story (REG entries)... Thx, jaclaz - will try it out. FYI - nLite will allow for this by NOT entering an additional User-ID. Seeing as how you have an OEM, you might try it out but WATCH IT if you're multi-booting (auto-partitioning). However, IF you do that, the first time the Admin Account creates ANY new user it will "automagically" disappear and you have to use the methods given. Yes, that's "standard" and you CAN access the "hidden" Admin in F8-Safe Mode.
  16. Well, can't disagree. Fortunately the Direct Links are there and maybe should be "logged" somewhere along with any existing KB articles. Time seems to be running out. And thank YOU for doing so (and "collecting").
  17. No (somewhat) and Yes. WGA Notifications is not needed, only WGA is needed. WGA Notifications supplies the same ActiveX as WGA but the Notifications adds the Tray which is useless. IE is still (sadly) necessary for Validation as shown above. Odd that they are forcing IE on a User when the OS is clearly valid (as is shown in the links given) and the same installation WAS Valid with the no-longer-useable EXE.Please note the link I "generally" support/recommend is one of two for XP. You may, of course, prefer Autopatcher but I find it to be inconvenient for Slipstreaming (doesn't retain original dates on download) and Updates (requires unnecessary reboots/reruns) and sometimes does not keep up-to-date (even though multiple contributors). Autopatcher does, however, provide an "near ending-point" for fully updating ALTHOUGH some of MSFN member recommended sites (many links given) provide better Update Packages. Thanks, thomasz86 and dencorso for the "tip". I actually hope this doesn't "get out" as it will allow for non-legit OS installations to circumvent validation. Hmmm... wonder if anyone has tested a non-legit on this workaround. MS better get on the ball with this (both the non-IE check and the workaround). edit - saved the page just in case this topic gets wiped for "some reason".
  18. Well, just KRUD!!!! Just tested - latest version DID work on Server 2K3 even and now DOES NOT! No matter WHAT! I even tried this. Even running the HTA by itself says "GENUINE" but the OTHER files (even those listed) do NOT!!! They have made it "obsolete"! I haven't tried it on my XP and haven't installed any Vista or Win7 yet to test so that's out (for testing). See also this: http://www.networkworld.com/community/toolshed/patents-idevice-docks-and-genuinecheck Yep, I'd say that this really stinks - Use the IE ActiveX (at the downloads) or die? Yes, it DOES work in IE6 but the GenuineCheck does NOT so what's up with that!!! (note - tested download MP10 in IE6 standard validation and it's fine.) Seems MS is fiddling while Rome burns again (re: EU settlement). OH WAIT - just seen the other post... DANG!!! It works! That is (excuse me, no offense to anyone...) RETARDED. Still, they've made Genuinecheck USELESS. (sigh...) ...and this is kind of "wonky" - http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/r27573348-WIN7-Stuck-on-Windows-Update points to here - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956702 Weird thing is that there is nearly NO information on this tomfoolery.
  19. That's what I have been able to "deduce". Video seems to be "circumvented" with (is it called?) VBEMP (See the eMachine thread)? Ethernet (may) be ok depending on the manufacturer. Sound also UNLESS HDaudio. SATA - see rloew's site and MSFN comments. The remainder(?) - dunno. "Generally" that would be it(?).
  20. "Per Dell Tech" probably means "a Forum member". Sometimes the forum has good info, but mostly not so hot, seeing as how I've had the most "experience" with Dell and done many "searches" for info on them. Take that "Tech" with a grain of salt... at least the OP had been guided to a useful site.
  21. Off-the-wall - RAM and/or PAGEFILE/HIBERNATE files on a bad HDD spot/cluster? The only thing I ever have a problem with is IE6 occasionally. I only suggest that because I had a HDD with an intact Restore partition but when Restore was performed it failed because the PAGEFILE area was bad. LiveXP plus a Scan "cured" it.
  22. Maybe not relevant (since you say SERVICE shuts down)... Apparently USB(?)... have occasional (rare) off/on the Desktop and the USB connection is faulty. Clear "junk", disconnect/reconnect all good BUT a different USB connection - usually remove ALSO the printer before the procedure then have to set "defaults" again. OK... I tried.... (NEVER had a SERVICE problem) edit - of note... I don't use ANY "power" options that allow sleep, screensavers, etc.
  23. 3 - Trying to install on an iPhone 5...
  24. Limit the RAM as per the LINK (above) so you can boot "normal" and get the 800-series INF directly from Intel and run the SETUP to "get what you need" (as in everything Intel has). After that it's just the peripherals (sound, video maybe, network, etc.). That chipset WILL boot normally (AFAIK) after the RAM is limited. See all of the Stickys particularly this. edit - SYSTEM.CB for Safe Mode. see stickys...
  25. L33T-SP33K!!! "wr0ng" - try "wrong" with a O instead of an 0 - get it? Key what you want into a TRANSLATOR and use THAT not the L33T translators that were hilariously provided. http://translate.google.com/ Example (english->hindi): Are you that hip to use stupid-speak? आप कर रहे हैं कि हिप बेवकूफ बात का उपयोग करने के लिए? Of course I could be wrong about your native tongue... BUT you appear to understand OUR ENGLISH just fine... savvy?
